Recap / Fanboy And Chum Chum S 1 E 17 Chicken Pox

Go To

Kyle is feeling under the weather, so he consults his Necronomicon, who was formerly "a Book of the Very, Very Sick". The Necronomicon tells Kyle he has chicken pox, which will turn a wizard into a chicken—and the cure is to lay an egg. Out of embarrassment, Kyle would prefer to ail in peace, but when Fanboy and Chum Chum come to bring him his homework, that's obviously not going to happen.

Tropes:

  • Accidentally Broke the MacGuffin: Subverted. After Kyle lays his egg but does not get cured, Fanboy and Chum Chum try to find out why but accidentally drop it, cracking it. Just before Kyle could unleash more fury on them, the egg hatches, revealing an elf fairy doctor who magically cures him.
  • An Aesop: You shouldn’t just barge in on someone who’s sick and try to help cure them. It’s best to leave them alone and let them heal on their own.
  • Animorphism: Kyle becoming a chicken.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Most of the episode is centered around Kyle, while Fanboy and Chum Chum have supporting roles.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Fanboy and Chum Chum manage to sneak into Kyle's room through the mail slot in the door.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts with an iris in and ends with an iris out.
  • Bottle Episode: The whole episode is set in Kyle's living room indoors, save for one outside shot when Kyle closes the blinds.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Kyle tells the titular duo that all he has to do to get better is bed rest, plenty of fluids, and lay an egg.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning when Kyle tries to push Fanboy and Chum Chum out, he cannot as he is weak and very sick. When he tries again at the end, he still cannot, despite getting his strength back.
  • Chickenpox Episode: Kyle develops the wizard's equivalent of chicken pox, which turns him into a literal chicken until he lays an egg.
  • Curse Cut Short: "Oh, shut the BAKAW and leave at once!"
  • Didn't Think This Through: The reason Fanboy and Chum Chum managed to get into Kyle's room was he left the mail slot unlocked. Huh.
  • Egg-Laying Male: Kyle turns into a chicken due to his titular ailment and has to lay an egg to get back to normal. Justified, since it's all the result of rather strange wizardry. Though he remains unaware to WHY he has to lay the egg.
  • Exact Words: Shortly before Kyle's chicken transformation is complete, Chum Chum warns him that he and Fanboy are "coming through the door any second now". That's just what they do.
  • Forced Transformation: Wizards are forced to turn into chickens when they get the chicken pox.
  • Gainax Ending: The boys turning into giant corncobs.
  • Minimalist Cast: Only Fanboy, Chum Chum and Kyle appear.
  • Nurse with Good Intentions: While trying to help their friend feel better, Fanboy and Chum Chum for the most part do more harm than good. Though they may have a hand in curing him in the end.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Viewers who have previously seen the episode now know why Kyle has to lay an egg to feel better: the egg contains a elf-fairy doctor who casts a spell to turn him normal.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Kyle does this as he lists off his symptoms. Lampshades it as the last one.
  • Sick Episode: As the title suggests, Kyle is sick with a wizard's form of chicken pox.
  • Staggered Zoom: The camera zooms in on the clock like this as it bongs, shortly before Chicken!Kyle's entrance.
