Recap / Family Guy S 20 E 5 Brief Encounter

Go To

When Peter and Quagmire accidentally switch underwear, they begin to mimic each other's behavior; Stewie and Doug agree to commit each other's murders.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • When Brian smells one of Lois' sweaty jogging bras, he notes that she was running really fast that day because Bonnie was watching. The context behind this is not explained, leaving it unclear whether Lois was showing herself off for Bonnie in a competitive light, or possibly a sexual one.
    • When Stewie discovers that Ms. Tiggywinkles is already dead, Doug implies that either he killed Ms. Tiggywinkles himself, or she died naturally.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • During the Rule of Three gag of Peter (wearing Quagmire's underpants) and Lois doing it, among the third time, they just decide to read books.
    • When Stewie sees Ms. Tiggywinkles nametag on her collar, he says "Oh, my God!"... and then says he can't read.
    • Near the end, when Stewie looks like he's actually going to kill Doug's cat, he really tries to save her.
  • Big "OMG!": Peter and Quagmire's shared reaction to having accidentally switched underwear.
  • Call-Back: One of the first signs that Peter is emulating Quagmire's behavior is him giving Brian a verbal dressing down, listing many of the same issues Quagmire himself did in Jerome Is The New Black.
  • Ceiling Banger: In contribution to the Running Gag of Chris sleeping in on Wednesday mornings, he yells at his parents, Quagmire and Ida while they are in the kitchen to make them shut up. Lois fires back that it's not Wednesday. Chris responds that it's Tuesday night, which is part of Wednesday.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Stewie tries to get Brian to kill Ms. Tiggywinkles. The off-screen battle is so severe that Brian is literally left in pieces. He got better later on.
  • Disney Villain Death: Doug... er, "kills" Chi Chi by pushing him off of the high shelf he was placed on.
  • Double Standard: Peter and Quagmire accidentally wearing each other's underwear is seen as something so embarrassing and damaging to their masculinity that their friendship almost dissolves. Meanwhile, women wearing each other's underwear is a complete non-issue, with Peter even finding it sexy.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Implied offscreen between Lois and Bonnie. Brian mentions that Lois was jogging really fast in a revealing top because she knew Bonnie was watching her, indicating that Lois was showing off to present herself as the superior woman of the two.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Lois tries to reassure Peter by saying girls switch underwear all the time and admits she might actually be wearing Bonnie's right now. It doesn't make Peter feel better, but he remarks that's hot.
  • Henpecked Husband: Peter claims he has no control over his marriage.
  • Hidden Depths: Joe claims to have underwear knowledge when he was crippled.
  • Noodle Incident: At the Clam, Quagmire enters all bruised, saying he got into it with "a human-sized chicken" that cut ahead of him in line at the bank.
  • Personality Swap: Peter acts like Quagmire and vice-versa when the two accidentally switch underwear.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Peter and Quagmire's belief in this is exaggerated to the hilt. Because they accidentally wore each other's underwear (thanks to a mixup at the laundromat), they go from merely being embarrassed to coming to the conclusion that they can't be friends anymore. Both Lois and Ida try to make it clear to Peter and Quagmire that men sharing affection of any kind (accidentally or not) is not a big deal in this day in age, yet they blatantly and repeatedly shoot down these claims. Peter outright states that "Guys don't share feelings, emotions, or underwear", and Quagmire points out that "Masculinity doesn't account for stuff like this", despite it being 2021, and those statements being the sort of thing you'd hear 15, 20 years ago from people with much more rigid views of masculinity.
  • Running Gag: Chris telling people to keep it down since he sleeps in on Wednesday mornings on account of independent study throughout first period.
  • Serious Business: Peter and Quagmire treat wearing each other's underwear as this, since Real Men Hate Affection.
  • Shout-Out: The episode ends with Stewie asking Brian if he wants to do a to be continued meme. Brian says that he doesn't know what that is before Stewie blows him up with a Bazooka. Mid explosion, there is a freeze frame complete with the sepia filter, Roundabout by Yes playing, and the "to be continued" stinger arrow. Of course, Brian got better in the next episode, Cootie & The Blowhard.
  • "Strangers on a Train"-Plot Murder: Stewie and Doug's subplot involves both of them killing each other's "enemy".
  • Take That!: Stewie says he can't bring himself to kill a cat, unless the cat was in the movie musical with Rebel Wilson.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: One interaction between Peter and Brian involves this:
Peter: There he is, the reason our lawn looks like it has leopard-skin pants.
Brian: What's up with you lately? You've been acting really weird all of the sudden.
Peter: All of the sudden, Brian? I think what you mean is all of a sudden. Ladies and gentlemen, that's the author in the house.
Brian: What's your problem? Why are you being such a jerk to me?
Peter: My problem with you? Let's see, where do I begin? You accept food, clothing and shelter, yet no responsibilities. You constantly wanna sleep with my wife, who is an angel - oh, and the hypocrisy! You claim to be an ally to women, but I bet you don't even know Nancy Pelosi's official title.
Brian: Sure I do. She's, uh... Chuck Schumer's secretary.
Peter: Forget it, Brian. Now, can you strap me to this milking table? My wife will be home soon.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Doug is adamant Stewie kills his pet cat, and sees no difference in him breaking a toy monkey Stewie hates.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Stewie and Doug's subplot is one to Strangers on a Train, complete with them making their agreement in a kid-sized train and Doug saying "criss-cross".
