Recap / Castlevania (2017) S4E3 "Walk Away"

Go To

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Badass Normal: While the army of farmers and peasants are ultimately wiped out by Striga and her soldiers, they still managed to pull of a very ballsy and pretty sound plan of ambushing the vampires during daylight, cutting open their tents so that the sunlight will kill them and hold their ground fighting the vampire soldiers before ultimately losing the fight once Striga joins in. This act is one of the reasons that Striga realizes that while she and her soldiers are strong enough to face any opposition, the humans will still rise up and give the vampires an uphill battle.
  • BFS: Not only do we get introduced to Striga's armor but also her absolute ginormous sword.
  • Black Knight: Striga checks off all of the boxes in this episode, being not only the strategic muscle behind Carmilla's military, but a one-woman army in black armor capable of slaughtering a massive mob of human soldiers almost singlehandedly.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Striga has armor that not only allows her to fight in broad daylight (with a golden glass visor protecting her face), but the trunk allows Morana to hide from the sun.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Striga could have easily taken all of the villagers on by herself, but once the soldiers armor up and join the battle, they're reduced to bloody meat.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Both Striga and Morana have moral and pragmatic reasons for doubting Carmilla's vision, seeing it all as an unprovoked invasion done more to satisfy Carmilla's ego than for any benefits Styria might receive.
  • Good Armor, Evil Armor: When peasant humans attack Striga and Morana's camp, Striga dons a black, corvid-like armor that protects her from the sunlight.
  • Mundane Utility: The episode starts with Isaac's night creature horde burying dead bodies too rotted to be used to make more night creatures while also making repairs to the town. When the talking night creature asks why Isaac is using night creatures — magical entities created to kill and destroy — in such a constructive way, Isaac argues that night creatures are tools as much as they are weapons, and that he believes that the town could be reinhabited at some point in the future.
  • Not So Above It All: Flyseyes is seen playing with a girl doll, mind you this is a large fly-like night creature whom was brought back from the dead and was formerly a scholar before his death and undeath. When one of the other night creatures gives him a questioning look, he claims that he just wanted to see if it "still worked", clearly embarrassed.
  • Nothing Personal: Morana stresses that she has no real animosity towards humans, comparing the relationship to that of humans and pig-livestock.
Morana: ...they don't cry when they want bacon.
  • Pet the Dog: When the talking Night Creature questions Isaac's less destructive decisions, he answers all of his questions and even lets him have some of his berries.
  • Shout-Out: Striga's day armor bears more than a passing resemblance to Artorias the Abysswalker, even having a huge BFS.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • While it seemed like a good idea at the time, Striga and Morana start regretting their agreement into Carmilla's campaign to conquer Europe, citing the sheer strenuous task of not only fighting an uphill battle against the rest of the world — both soldiers and ordinary people who take it upon themselves to defend their lands — as well as the arduous and never-ending task of preserving and providing for such an occupation. Not to mention Morana's feet hurt.
    • Striga, while not unsympathetic, initially interprets her noncombatant wife's concerns as questioning Striga's skills as a soldier and general in battle. After being ambushed by common farmers and villagers who refuse to die quietly, she realizes just how impossible this war would be.
    • Striga for all of her vampiric Super-Strength is still slowly getting tired the more she fights with her heavy day armor and BFS.
  • Title Drop: Trevor says it when it comes to Sypha being tired of being a bit player in other people's stories.
