Recap / Bowser's Koopalings S 5 E 7 The Love Potion

Go To

After being rejected by Camilla again, Roy asks Iggy for help and provides him with a Love Potion that will make whoever drinks it fall in love with the person they saw first. However, things go south when Camilla accidentally ends up falling in love with Lemmy instead of Roy.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: During the dinner at the McQueen's house, Sybill calls her husband Byron "Brian".
  • Accent Slip-Up: Camilla's parents speak with a british accent. However, when Byron catches Lemmy trying to escape from the wedding, his accent starts slipping into american English.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Shawn doesn't seem to be very bright and is often seen drinking.
  • Artistic License – Law: Camilla's wedding to Lemmy, and later on Roy after the effects of the Love Potion wear off, is this given that they are both around fifteen-to-sixteen years old. In real life, the marriageable age in most countries is eighteen.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Roy grows one after Camilla decides she wants to marry Lemmy.
  • Beehive Hairdo: Camilla's mother styles her hair like this.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Camilla's parents have spoiled her badly. Camilla shows this by whining to her parents about every single little thing throughout the wedding.
  • Brick Joke: When he attempts to give her the love potion, Camilla tells Lemmy that she doesn't date guys under six foot (roughly under 1.80 meters). After the effects of the titular potion wear off Camilla insults Lemmy and tells him that no one wants to date a person under six foot.
  • Call-Back:
    • Eddie tells Lauren that he feels like he has heard Morton's voice before, alluding to the fact that Morton prank-called Eddie in the previous episode.
    • A. Byzmal saying that he got locked inside the storage room and not wanting to give any more details could be seen as a Noodle Incident, but it most likely has to do with the fact that he insulted his customers and business partners after being tricked into thinking he had won one billion dollars in the previous episode.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Iggy explicitly tells Roy that the love potion won't work if the person who drinks it is a homosexual due to Incompatible Orientation, which becomes relevant later on when Lemmy does not fall in love with Camilla after she makes him drink from the potion.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: If King Bob-Omb hadn't blocked Roy's path in Goomburger, Lemmy's suffering, and by extension the whole episode, would have been avoided.
  • Decoy Protagonist: The episode starts as yet again another one of Roy's attempts to win Camilla over. However, it's soon revealed that the star of the episode is actually Lemmy (Though to be fair, the episode's thumbnail on YouTube does make a lot of emphasis on Lemmy and Camilla).
  • Dysfunctional Family: With the exception of Shawn and Sybill, the McQueens are all a bunch of unpleasant assholes.
  • Exact Words:
    • Camilla told Ally to buy Lauren, Wendy, and herself dresses with washed out colors so they wouldn't overshadow her on her wedding day. Ally then says that she washed the dresses before the three of them tried them on.
    • This exchange of words between Shawn and his father.
Byron: Say "I'm sorry" to your sister!
Shawn: I'm sorry to your sister!
  • Females Are More Innocent: Unlike her husband Byron, who only approves of Camilla wanting to marry Lemmy because it will give him a huge reputation boost, Sybill just wants Camilla to be happy (and seems completely oblivious of her daughter's repulsive personality too).
  • Foil: Camilla's parents are foils to one another. Both are incredibely snooty and responsible for their daughter being a Spoiled Brat who only cares about herself, but while Camilla's father doesn't give a lick about who his daughter gets married to as long as he can benefit from it, her mother seems to actually love her, as she is genuinely happy for her wanting to marry someone.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Because the love potion doesn't work if the person who drinks it sees someone of a gender they are not attracted to, the Koopalings end up finding out about Lemmy's homosexuality.
  • Gaydar: King Boo is easily able to tell that Lemmy is gay because he has witnessed many members of the Koopa royal family come out of the closet before. That and that he found some magazines under Lemmy's bed.
  • Gold Digger: Ludwig suggests to Lemmy that he marries Camilla for her money and then dates someone else behind her back.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Iggy's Love potion does indeed work like a charm... but when it's consumed by a living being with the ability to reason they turn into clingy stalkers who desperately crave the attention of the one they are in love with.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Roy's plan to get Camilla to fall in love with him miserably fails when he gives her a chocolate milkshake instead of the love potion by mistake, and unfortunately for him Camilla hates chocolate which causes her to tell him off. Roy then asks Lemmy to give her the potion and then walk in front of him after she drinks it, but King Bob-Omb gets in his way and doesn't let him pass, causing Camilla to fall in love with Lemmy and make his life a living nightmare.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The episode starts with Roy tying to win Camilla over and failing, after which the plot changes to Lemmy being subjected to Camilla's clinginess and snobby attitude. At the end of the episode Roy offers to marry Camilla after the effects of the love potion wear off and she no longer finds Lemmy attractive.
  • Incompatible Orientation: The reason why Lemmy did not fall in love with Camilla after she made him drink from the potion is because he is gay, and the love potion does not work if the person who drinks it sees someone of a gender they are not attracted to.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: For some reason Byron thinks it's best for whoever marries his only daughter to be the heir of his oil company rather than one of his own kids (although, it is understandable in the case of Shawn).
  • It's All About Me:
    • Camilla's father approves of her marriage with Lemmy, not because Camilla wants to marry him, but because having a connection with the Royal family via a member inheriting his oil company would be a huge reputation boost for him. The instant the effects of the love potion go away and Camilla refuses to marry Lemmy, Byron has her marry Roy as a way of making sure this happens. Later episodes even imply that Byron doesn't allow Camilla to divorce Roy.
    • Camilla acts like the whole wedding revolves around her and bearates her friends, family and even fiancé for every single little thing, ranging from the color of the dresses her friends are wearing to being handed a glass of lemonade.
  • Jerkass:
    • Camilla is much more ruder in this episode than in her past appearences, insulting others for simple mistakes and things that are not even their own fault, showing off how much of an insufferable brat she really is. She even breaks a glass with lemonade (which also was spiked with the counter potion) and insults Larry over it just because it had five ice cubes instead of three.
    • Camilla's father clearly doesn't give a damn about his daughter as an individual, outright saying that he doesn't care who she gets married to as long as he can benefit from it. The way he acts also shows that he just let Camilla do whatever she wanted growing up and never said "no" to her even once, causing her to become a Spoiled Brat who thinks the world revolves around her.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Let's just say that Kalin and Myles are very protective of Camilla.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Koopalings when they find out that Lemmy is gay, and Lemmy himself when his siblings learn of his homosexuality. The attendees of Camilla and Lemmy's wedding also have this reaction when Lemmy reveals his sexuality as a desperate attempt to stop it (except Bowser, who misses it because he was wearing headphones)
  • Mistaken for Gay:
  • Noodle Incident:
    • That time Iggy tried to build a Robot Girl for himself.
    • Lauren recalls the time Eddie ruined a wedding by pushing the best man into the wedding cake.
    • Camilla's mother tells her that a fight has broken out in the main hall. Later on during the wedding Eddie is covered in bruises.
  • Obnoxious Entitled Housewife: Played for Laughs. Camilla acts like a stereotypical Karen after Lemmy says that the food at Hotheads is a bit too hot for him.
    Camilla: Get the manager, now!
  • Overly Long Name: Camilla's full name is Camilla Claudia Ophelia Daniella McQueen
King Boo: Which one of those is her real name?
  • Parental Obliviousness: Lemmy announces to everyone in the wedding that he is a homosexual as a desperate attempt to stop it. Bowser manages to not hear his son screaming out loud that he's gay because he was wearing headphones.
  • Porn Stash: Lemmy keeps one under his bed.
  • Pushover Parents: Just one look at Sybill and Byron will give you the answer as to why Camilla is such a brat.
  • Rich Bitch: Ludwig calls Camilla this after Larry points out that his suggestion of Lemmy marrying Camilla for her money and dating other guys behind her back would be infidelity.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lemmy attempts to escape from his wedding with Camilla by fleeing to the Frosted Kingdom. Camilla's family finds this out and force him to marry her, however.
  • Spanner in the Works: Lemmy's suffering could have been avoided had King Bob-Omb not blocked Roy's path in Goomburger.
  • Spoiled Brat: Lemmy points out to Roy that Camilla is nothing but a brat in spite of her good looks.
  • Straight Gay: The Koopalings figure out that Lemmy is gay as a result of him not falling in love with Camilla when she made him drink the love potion and then look at her.
  • Token Good Teammate: Sybill and Shawn are the only decent people in the McQueen family, with Sybill being really kind at all times and Shawn being a drunken bum that just minds his own business.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: If only King Bob-Omb hadn't blocked Roy's way...
  • Valentine's Day Episode: Subverted. The episode was announced as a Valentine's Day Episode, but it's not actually one.
  • Wham Episode: Lemmy is Forced Out of the Closet.
