Recap / Bob's Burgers S3E19 "Family Fracas"

Go To

The Belchers become game show champions, while the host plots their downfall out of revenge.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Law: Sure, without decisive evidence the Belchers' case falls through, but you'd think that Harry burning the recording in plain sight would make him criminally liable for tampering with evidence at the bare minimum. It's likely a Kangaroo Court, however, so it's justified.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: A rather blatant case of it. The Belchers are cheated off the show, Pesto wins a free van, the evidence is destroyed, and that's the end of the episode.
  • Downer Ending: Easily the most infamous one in the series, with no caveats or small victories to be had. The Pestos win the van due to how corrupt the executives are, Chuck succeeds in getting revenge against the Belchers, and Bob's evidence is destroyed in plain sight. Even the sole bright spot (Jimmy's van getting a puncture) is snuffed out when everyone immediately shames Bob for laughing and forces him to fix it.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Bob's sole Hope Spot against Jimmy—Jimmy's ill-gotten van breaks and he has no idea how to fix it—is snuffed out by his own family, who makes him help Jimmy out. They also admit that it's funny when Jimmy bullies Bob but not the other way around—which is understandable coming from someone like Louise, but is appallingly out-of-character for someone like Linda and Tina.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Gene loves eating the Fracas Foam. Linda also eats some in the credits sequence.
  • Golden Snitch: The titular game show features one—an aptly-colored golden ball hidden in a ball pit. As part of the final challenge, finding it is basically an Instant-Win Condition regardless of how the rest of the game went.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The first half of the episode is a standard Game Show Appearance. After Jimmy Pesto and Chuck Charles cheat the Belchers off the show, it becomes a Courtroom Episode instead.
  • I Have No Son!: Jimmy Pesto refers to Trev as the son he wishes he had... in front of his actual biological children and on live TV.
  • Kafka Komedy: The second half of the episode elevates Bob's Butt-Monkey status to new heights, to the point that his own family eventually turns on him just to kick him while he's down.
  • Kangaroo Court: Pam's Court appears to have shades of this. Pam herself is quite clearly inexperienced and easily manipulated as a judge.
  • Karma Houdini: Everybody who participated in rigging the Belchers' loss gets away scot-free. Jimmy Pesto and the studio are acquitted of all charges after Harry blatantly destroys the evidence, and Chuck Charles gets his revenge on Bob without any strings attached.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Tina doesn't get invited to watching movies at the Pestos' van by Jimmy Jr. because she was very mean to him during the game show, though Tina tries to excuse herself because it was her game face...only to repeat the same thing at Pam's Court.
Tina: Your ass is grass and I'm gonna mow it.
    Jimmy Jr.: Leave, Me, ALONE!
  • Like a Son to Me: Jimmy Pesto says this about Trev to justify him being part of the Pestos' team despite having no legal or biological relation to the family, and he says this right next to his three sons.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Even though it was Linda who flashed on camera and got Pam and Chuck's show canceled, Chuck pins it solely on Bob and zeroes in on screwing him over for revenge.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: While Louise siding with Jimmy Pesto at the end is in-character, the rest of the Belchers (especially Linda and Tina) doing so is rather jarring and only serves to kick Bob while he's down.
  • Refuge in Audacity: It's a wonder the executives got away with everything, given how blatant they are with their cheating.
    • Jimmy Pesto knowing in advance where the golden ball was is one thing. The golden ball being put so close to him that he could scoop it up in two seconds is another thing.
    • Harry has balls of steel for destroying the Belchers' decisive evidence on live TV.
  • Saying Too Much: Bob becomes suspicious when Jimmy Pesto says that Chuck knew they were going to lose.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Pam runs off after the verdict has been handed down, with some choice parting words.
Pam: I sentence you all to kiss my ass!
  • Sequel Episode: To "Beefsquatch", with Chuck's revenge being motivated by his downfall in that episode.
  • Serious Business: Tina of all people gets rather intense about being a contestant.
Tina: Your ass is grass, and I'm gonna mow it.
    Jimmy Jr. Leave me alone!
  • Shout-Out:
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: As if Chuck Charles wasn't already a Hate Sink in "Beefsquatch", he doesn't even bother hiding his utter contempt for the Belchers and spends his screentime being as petty as possible.
