Recap / Big Hero 6: The Series S1 E18 "Steamer's Revenge"

Go To

The team plan a surprise for Wasabi's birthday, and Baron Von Steamer comes back, wanting a rematch with Boss Awesome.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Amphibious Automobile: Wasabi's car gets equipped with an underwater mode.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Boss Awesome's tribute statue is a disguised giant mech used by Baron Von Steamer, in an attempt to destroy the city.
  • Birthday Episode: Wasabi's is celebrated here, with his recovered/upgraded car being his surprise from his friends.
  • Call-Back: Wasabi's car, which has spent the majority of the movie and the entirety of the series up to this point in the bay, plays a pivotal role in both subplots of the episode.
  • Captured on Purpose: Fred Sr. would let himself be captured by Baron Von Steamer so that he could reveal his plan by Evil Gloating, then defeat him. Fred disguises himself as Boss Awesome and lets himself get captured so the team could deal with Steamer the same way, although it doesn't quite work out that way.
  • Did You Get a New Haircut?: At first it looks like Fred disguised as Boss Awesome won't fool Baron Von Steamer, but then Von Steamer brushes it off as Boss Awesome working out.
  • Evil Gloating: Baron Von Steamer is fond of it, according to Fred's dad, and the team plans on using this to thwart him, disguising Fred as Boss Awesome and eavesdropping as Von Steamer explains his plan. Von Steamer, however, has figure out that gloating has gotten him defeated in the past and decided to hold off, although he does have trouble resisting the urge.
  • Facepalm: One of the sloths with Boss Awesome does a slow one during Fred's training.
  • Literal Metaphor: Fred wonders about having to fit in his father's shoes. Rather than meaning that he fears having to live up to his father's role as a great hero, he really means fitting into his actual shoes, as they are a few sizes too big.
  • Oh God, with the Verbing!: After von Steamer swears revenge on Big Hero 6 again, they shut the police car door on him and Go Go says "I can't with the revenge-vowing anymore".
  • String Theory:
    • Hiro has a display board with several pictures on it, including:
      • Lenore Shimamoto's picture and painting of "City Rising", first introduced in "Failure Mode".
      • Various pictures of their Rogues Gallery, including Globby and Noodle Burger Boy.
      • A security camera still of Yokai's compound on Akuma Island from the movie and "Fan Friction".
      • Obake's symbol, first seen in the elevator in "Baymax Returns" and discovered by Hiro on the mobile CPU in "Kentucky Kaiju".
    • Fred also has one for comedic effect, used to figure out what to get for Wasabi's birthday.
  • Taught by Experience: Baron Von Steamer has figured out that Evil Gloating got him in trouble in the past and refrains (or rather, tries to) from using it. He also devised an alternate plan in case his original plan was foiled.
  • Tickle Torture: Fred forces Baron Von Steamer to surrender by tickling his foot, inspired by him messing up his dad's pressure point technique on Heathcliff earlier.
  • Time for Plan B: Baron Von Steamer has devised a plan B in case he was thwarted in his first plan. When that also fails, Fred sarcastically asks if he has a plan C. He does not.
  • Transformation Sequence: Baymax gets one when going into Overdrive mode in his aquatic armor.
  • Trojan Horse: The giant statue of Boss Awesome is actually Von Steamer's Humongous Mecha in disguise.
  • Vague Age: Possibly averted; Wasabi's birthday cake has 21 candles, so it might be the age he turned that day.
  • Voice with an Internet Connection: Obake hacks into the team's comms to lend a "helpful" hand in trying to find Steamer's weapon.
