Tilly gets to buy paprika while we get to watch a pie?! Well... wait until what happens later.
Harvest Dinner

Bill sends Tilly to buy some paprika for his stew, but Cricket and Gramma want to beat her to the punch. Meanwhile, Nancy helps Bill in the kitchen.

"Harvest Dinner" contains examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: While arguing in the kitchen, Bill and Nancy end up ripping open a bag of flour and spilling it everywhere, including all over themselves. They proceed to laugh themselves silly over how ridiculous they have acted and now look.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: "Paprika for Papa... Paprika for Papa... Paprika for Papa..."
  • Adults Are Useless: Bill makes absolutely no excuse to not check up on the window to realize Cricket and Gramma disobeyed him and are not watching the pie as he asked them to.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Bill gives one to Cricket in the beginning, showing he loves him "enough".
  • The Cameo: Wholesome Foods is the store Tilly gets the paprika from.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Bill puts Cricket and Gramma in charge of watching a pie, they assume it's just because he doesn't trust them to buy the paprika. When they return, they learn someone stole the pie.
  • Chekhov's Gag: After getting into the house, Nancy makes a comment about the rooster being as mean as ever. It turns out the rooster is the one who stole the pie.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: A lot of trouble could've been avoided if Bill had simply told Cricket and Gramma why they needed to watch the pie in the first place.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Turns out Tilly knew the paprika would be taken by Cricket and Gramma, so she hid the paprika in her pocket while they took home the empty jar.
  • Determinator: Tilly refuses to switch jobs with Cricket and Gramma because Bill trusted her, and nothing stops her from buying the paprika.
  • Faux Horrific: "We're out of paprika?!!" and "Who's watching the pie?!!"
  • Foreshadowing: When Cricket is not happy at watching the pie, he wonders if it's going to "run away" if they don't. Sure enough, the mean rooster runs away with it.
  • Friend to All Living Things: The reason Bill didn't want Tilly to watch the pie is because he figured she would share the food with any animal that came sniffing along. She freely admits she would've done that, while giving some paprika to the dog.
  • Genre Savvy: Knowing Cricket and Gramma would steal the paprika, Tilly carried it in her pocket and all they stole was an empty container.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!:
Bill: I'm not one to boast, but gosh darn it, you done good, Bill Green.
  • Hypocrite: Cricket and Gramma initially refuse to buy paprika for Bill's stew but protest against not being chosen for the task when he asks Tilly to do it.
  • Impact Silhouette: When Cricket and Gramma realize they accidentally bought the wrong thing from the store and Cricket screams into his overalls, his face can be visible under the fabric.
  • Ironic Echo: Cricket announces his and Gramma's return to the house with a triumphant "da-da-da-da!" before learning the jar is actually empty. Tilly mockingly repeats it when revealing she has the paprika.
  • Irony: In spite of Cricket and Gramma wanting to beat Tilly, she ends up beating them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Cricket and Alice get their comeuppance for not watching the pie like Bill asked them to when it got stolen by the mean rooster unguarded without warning.
  • MacGuffin: The paprika.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Nancy's way of cooking. She pulls Perp Sweating on a tomato, uses a spoon as a catapult, pretends the horseradish sauce is a rocket, and dumps the vegetables in without letting the broth simmer first.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Cricket and Gramma are ashamed of themselves, upon learning watching the pie was a real job and not just pointless busywork. They happily beat up the rooster to get back the pie and make up for all this.
  • Oh, Crap!: Twice in succession by Cricket and Gramma. First when they realize the paprika jar is empty and Tilly hid it, and when they see the pie has disappeared as a result of nobody watching it and Bill did trust them after all.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The pie getting stolen by the mean rooster when nobody watches it.
  • Onion Tears: While Bill is cutting onions at the beginning for the stew and is recapping his harvest, his eyes are full of water from cutting them, which Cricket points out. Bill dismisses this and claims he's not crying from the onions, but because he loves them.
  • Out-Gambitted: After accidentally buying a papaya instead of paprika, Cricket and Gramma switch the papaya with the paprika Tilly bought, but when they get home, the jar was empty. Turns out, Tilly knew of their trick and hid the paprika in her pocket to deceive them.
  • Overcrank: "No, wait! The broth — HASN'T SIMMERED YET!"
  • Poor Communication Kills: Cricket and Gramma soon forget Tilly's "Paprika for Papa" mantra, with Cricket only hearing the "Papa" part and assuming Bill wants a papaya.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Upon seeing the rooster has the pie and is refusing to give it up:
Cricket: C'mon, Gramma, let's do the job we were born to do.
  • Properly Paranoid: Bill says the rooster is his top suspect for stealing the pie. He is absolutely right.
  • Rack Focus: During the slow-mo shot of the vegetables falling into the soup, the camera shifts its focus from the vegetables falling to Bill's shocked expression behind them.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Watch the scene where Bill asks Cricket and Gramma to watch the pie again after seeing what happened to it in their absence and then you'll realize why he's really serious they need to watch it.
  • Serious Business: Bill really meant it when asking Cricket and Gramma to watch that pie — as a lot of animals could take a whiff of it, and he was asking them to defend it in case that happens. In their absence, it gets stolen by the mean rooster without warning, and he promptly chides them for not doing their job.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: After Bill asks Tilly to get the paprika and Cricket and Gramma watch the pie in the window, the latter two believe this to be a "bogus job" and attempt to beat Tilly and get the paprika instead. But it turns out watching the pie really was an important job after all — with no one to watch it, it is left vulnerable and is eventually stolen by the mean rooster without warning, and Bill punishes them for disobeying him and they could've defended it all along.
  • Survival Mantra: Tilly repeatedly chants "Paprika for Papa" as she goes to the store.
  • We Need a Distraction: To switch their papaya with the paprika, Gramma distracts Tilly with an imitation of a cat from a trash can, and while she isn't looking, Cricket makes the switch.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Bill calls Cricket and Gramma out for disobeying him and not watching the pie, leaving it to be stolen by the mean rooster without warning.

Winner Winner

The Greens go to the community center, where Tilly wants to get her own trophy, Cricket tries to find out what's behind a mysterious door, and Bill brings Gramma to a dance workout.

"Winner Winner" contains examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Upon finding nothing in the mysterious room, Cricket tells the others, "Behind the door was...nothing." When they start to get upset and he doesn't want to disappoint them, he continues with, "Nothing besides...the most amazing stuff ever!"
  • Blatant Lies: Cricket is forced to tell one to his friends so he doesn't disappoint them for finding out there's nothing in that mysterious room.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode takes place in the community center.
  • The Chessmaster: Bill becomes this to Gramma as he tries to entice her into joining in the Boomba lesson.
  • Continuity Nod: The man teaching the Boomba class is Juan Pablo, the judge of the gymnastics meet in Fill Bill.
  • Match Cut: When Tilly realizes she has to fight to win a trophy, everything around her snaps from the rec room to the fighting arena with her getting clad in boxing gear, with her staying in the same location with the same expression.
  • Noodle Incident: After showing Tilly pictures of Community Sue winning trophies in 1995, 1996, and 1998, Community Sue tells Tilly not to ask her about 1997.
  • Orbital Shot: Tilly has one during her Training Montage.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is one half of the famous phrase from Player Unknowns Battlegrounds, "Winner, winner, chicken dinner."
  • Sweet and Sour Grapes: Tilly cannot bring herself to fight her opponent in the boxing ring, having realized she doesn't need a trophy anymore and it's the thought that counts. Sue doesn't think so, but she agrees anyway. But then the opponent collapses from exhaustion, and Tilly wins a trophy by default.
  • Victory by Endurance: Tilly unwittingly enters a boxing match and, not wanting to hurt anyone, keeps dodging until her opponent becomes too tired to keep fighting.
  • A Wizard Did It: Invoked. When Cricket finally finds out what's behind the door, he's so disappointed he makes up a story about what's there and says a wizard blocked the entrance so nobody will be able to go there again.
