Ginger is framed for vandalizing the school statue and is denied her part as lead in the school musical, when it was really Miranda and Mipsy. Meanwhile, Carl is having trouble coming up with a prank that is good enough to scare his mom for Halloween, so he calls Maude back from the dead to help.

Tropes:

  • Accent Slip-Up:
    • Miranda's accent in the play slips as she tries to not break character while the others accuse her.
    • Dodie likewise slips back into her own accent as she says "you are so guilty".
  • Affectionate Parody: The titular play of "I Spy A Witch" is essentially a musical of The Crucible.
  • Back from the Dead: Carl calls his elderly friend, Maude, back from the dead to help him prank his mom.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Blake after he witnesses Maude's ghost take over Hoodsey's body.
Blake: Carl? I believe I've had an accident.
  • Burn the Witch!: In-universe. The play I Spy a Witch, despite being set in Salem during Puritan times, has the main character being sentenced to burn at the stake. As it's a musical, it also has a song called "Salem Barbecue".
  • Call-Back: Carl uses a mannequin's arm for a Halloween prank, fittingly enough, as he had done something similar in "Carl & Maude" with the full body.
  • Clear My Name: Ginger is tasked with clearing her name in this episode after she’s accused of vandalizing a school statue.
  • Cross-Cast Role: Dodie is given a male role in the play due to a lack of boys auditioning.
  • Demonic Possession: When Maude is brought back, she possesses Hoodsey's body.
  • Evil Laugh: Miranda does a particularly chilling one when she’s trying out for the school play...even though she was auditioning as Glinda the Good Witch. She does it again when the Nickelodeon Haypile logo appears.
  • Failed Attempt at Scaring: Carl does everything he can to try to scare his mom and has no luck whatsoever. This is what inspires him to then summon Maude’s ghost for help.
  • Faint in Shock: While Carl’s pranks may not work on his mom, they certainly work on Marcie.
  • Frame-Up: Miranda frames Ginger for the statue vandalism by planting the supplies in her backpack.
  • Friendly Ghost: Instead of scaring Lois like Carl had planned, Maude actually helps clear Ginger’s name by giving her mom a picture that proves Miranda was behind the vandalism all along.
  • Halloween Episode: It’s Halloween and Ginger is the lead in the school play, but not if she can’t clear her name of a crime she didn’t commit.
  • Halloween Trickery: Miranda vandalizes the school statue to make it look like a witch and frames Ginger in order to get her spot in the school play.
  • Karma Houdini: Virtually all the girls in the play (besides Ginger and her friends) know Miranda and Mipsy defamed a statue and presumably framed Ginger for it. Miranda is forced to confess everything during the play, but is never shown being punished and successfully cheated Ginger out of the play. Mipsy gets off the hook, and the girls who knew what was going on should have said something, but get away with it.
  • Lighter and Softer: The I Spy a Witch play appears to be one of The Crucible as, although it follows the plot of Puritan girls being caught dancing and an ensuing Witch Hunt, it has a happy ending where Priscilla (who appears to be a counterpart to Betty) wakes up from her trance and exonerates Goodie Webster, who is saved from execution as a result.
  • Off the Rails: The in-universe I Spy a Witch is supposed to end with Goodie Webster being acquitted once Priscilla wakes up and vouches for her. Once Ginger gate crashes, the girls all change the ending so that Goodie Webster is guilty after all as a way to expose Miranda.
  • Quaking with Fear: Lois gets so scared by Maude’s ghost that she starts shaking all over and drops her tray of Halloween treats.
  • Rake Take: Maude in Hoodsey’s body steps on a rake which swings up and hits Hoodsy in the head, knocking Maude out of his body.
  • School Play: Ginger isn’t allowed to keep her role as lead in the school play, “I Spy a Witch,” as it’s believed she’s responsible for the vandalism. This leaves the role open for Miranda to step in as the understudy. When Ginger finds out the truth, she dons a costume and sneaks on stage during the play to out Miranda, which changes the ending of the play so that the lead is found guilty of being a witch after all.
  • Stock Punishment: Ginger gets locked in a pillory while rehearsing for the school play. Miranda does as well during the play itself and once she’s outed as the true vandal, no one unlocks her in order for her to take a bow with the rest of the cast.
  • Stupid Evil: Miranda vandalizes the school statue and tries to blame it on Ginger so that she can take her place as the lead in the school play. At first, the plan works, and Miranda probably never would have been caught if Mipsy hadn't photographed the misdeed and sent the picture to some of the other girls, including Courtney, who uploaded it on the Internet. Inevitably, Ginger eventually sees the picture and Miranda is forced to confess during the play that she was the true vandal.
  • Unexpectedly Real Magic: Carl and Blake are in surprise that the séance actually works and summons Maude's ghost.
  • Whoopee Cushion: When Carl and Hoodsey throw Blake into their hideout, he lands on a whoopee cushion that they were intending as an offering to Maude.
