Recap / Animaniacs Episode 84

Go To

Airdate: September 7, 1996

Cutie and the Beast: The Warners star in a parody of Beauty and the Beast.

Boo Happens: Chicken Boo plays the title character from Forrest Gump.

Noel: The Warners sing a rather bizarre version of "The First Noël".

Cutie and the Beast contains examples of:

  • Animated Outtakes: Dot just cannot seem to say her entire full name right.
  • The Cameo: Pinky and the Brain, dressed in their costumes from "Spellbound", appear briefly.
  • Casting Gag: The Beast is played by the Tasmanian Devil.
  • Call-Back: After Yakko gets Dot's full name right on the first try, Dot snidely remarks, "Oh, thank you, Mister 'United States Canada Mexico Panama'! Big whoop!"
  • Creator Cameo: Voice director Andrea Romano plays the offscreen director.
  • Doomed Supermarket Display: During the "That's Dot" song, Dot pulls an apple out from a pyramid of apples, causing the pyramid to fall.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Yakko says that if they don't enter the dark, scary forest, they'll suffer a fate worse than death.
    Wakko: You mean...?
Yakko: That's right. Another song by Dot.
    Wakko: [Skyward Scream]
Dot: What is this, "Make Fun of Your Sister Day" on Animaniacs?
  • Group Hug: After spending majority of the episode arguing and bickering, Yakko and Wakko finally reconcile with Dot towards the end. After Dot fails one too many times trying to get Taz to fall in love with her, Yakko and Wakko comfort her with a hug.
  • In-Joke: Dot calls Wakko "Mr. Pops His P's to the Mic", to which Wakko replies, "Oh, poo! I never pop my P's," and the offscreen director says, "Wakko, we got a big 'P' on 'poo'." This is a reference to how voice actors have to be careful how they pronounce their consonants.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: As seen in the In-Joke above, when Dot tells Wakko that he pops his P's into the microphone, Wakk proclaims otherwise and says 'Poo!' to Dot's statement. Then the voice director said that they got a big p-pop on "Poo". Dot laughs in aggravated triumph.
  • Mythology Gag: Taz's Leitmotif is the instrumental for his own show, Taz-Mania.
  • Shout-Out: Yakko and Wakko with Taz reprise the "Do the funny thing you do" routine from the "It's All Relatives" episode of Tiny Toon Adventures.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: In one of the outtakes, Dot lets a lot of (bleeped) obscenities rip.
Yakko: That was my little sister who said that. Mwah! Goodnight, everybody!
  • Take That!: Prior to arriving at the castle, Wakko holds what the audience first thinks is a map before saying that according to it, he'd say they've lost their way. Dot grabs the parchment for her and Yakko to read, then Yakko points out it's not a map, but a campaign flyer for the Republican party. Wakko's response?
I know. That's why I'd say we lost our way... as a country I mean.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: I'll give you three guesses. It should be noted that Rita and Runt previously parodied the film in "Witch One".

Boo Happens contains examples of:

Noel contains examples of:

  • Christmas Episode: ...and yet it initially aired in September.
  • Song Parody: Of "The First Noël".
  • Tyop on the Cover: The song begins as Wakko is writing a letter to Santa, spelling his name "S-A-N-T-L-A." As Yakko sings, "No 'L', no 'L' / Santa's name has no 'L' / And he won't be too pleased / If you don't learn to spell."

The credits contain examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Neither of the Warners are able to get Steven Spielberg's name right, so they just call him "Mr. Kate Capshaw".
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: After the lights go out, Yakko says, "I got a headache this big, and it's got 'Warner Bros.' written all over it."
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Both Yakko and Dot scoff at Rob Paulsen and Tress MacNeille's credit, but Wakko says he hears Jess Harnell is cute.
  • Creative Closing Credits: After the Warners bid everyone goodnight, they proceed to badmouth everyone in the credits, including their own voice actors! You can clearly hear Tress MacNeille, Rob Paulsen, and Jess Harnell having a blast recording this scene!
  • Credits Gag: Names: By Our Parents. Also, there are disclaimers about getting eye exams, visiting the dentist, and demanding Kids' WB exec Jamie Kellner for more episodes by giving out his (blurred out) phone number.
  • Is This Thing Still On?
  • Oh, Crap!: The Warners, once they realize that they forgot to turn their microphones off.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: When Yakko sees the credits for the writers, he says, "You call the drek they stick with us 'writing'? Puh-leez."

NOTE: The theme song replaces "Meet Pinky and the Brain who want to rule the universe" with "Meet Ralph and Dr. Scratchansniff, say hi to Hello Nurse" due to Pinky and the Brain getting their own spin-off.
