The Brave Little Trailer A trailer tries to save his trailer park from a tornado.

Yes, Always: The Brain has been called upon to replace dialogue in a TV commercial. Hilarity Ensues.

Ups and Downs contains examples of:

  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode takes place inside an elevator.
  • Crossover: Apparently, Wakko also knows Randy Beaman.
Wakko: Okay. One time... okay, see, one time, Randy Beaman's grandparents got stuck in an elevator, and they were in there so long, they became skeleton people.
  • Elevator Failure: The elevator breaks down with Wakko and Dr. Scratchansniff trapped inside. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Here We Go Again!: As soon as the janitors open the elevator, they step inside and accidentally dislodge the jaws of life, locking all four inside again. Then one of the workers starts to tell the same knock-knock joke Wakko told earlier, causing Dr. Scratchansniff to yell, "Get me outta here!"
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: Wakko tells one to pass the time.
    Wakko: Knock-knock.
    Dr. Scratchansniff: Who's there?
    Wakko: Max.
    Dr. Scratchansniff: Max who?
Wakko: Max wants to come in and go crazy!
[Scratchansniff gives the audience a confused look.]
Dr. Scratchansniff: Well, okay, that's not really a joke, is it? You see, because it makes no sense.
Wakko: It does if you know Max.
Dr. Scratchansniff: But I don't know Max!
Wakko: If you did, you'd be laughing.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: This was based on an incident in which writers Paul Rugg and Deanna Oliver were stuck in an elevator for quite some time.
  • The Voice: Except for a brief shot of just their lower bodies, the two technicians Dr. Scratchansniff is communicating with are only heard through the intercom.
  • We Have Forgotten the Phlebotinum: Scratchy suggests to Wakko that he "pull something big and silly from your gaggy bag" to help them. Wakko responds that he didn't bring it.
Dr. Scratchansniff: You've got to get us out of here! Do something big and silly from your gaggy bag!
    Wakko: I didn't bring it.
Dr. Scratchansniff: [searching Wakko frantically] But you ALWAYS has your gaggy bag!! Where iz it?!? GIVE ME YOUR GAGGY BAG!!

  • Bowdlerize: In order to get past S&P, some of the dialogue from the "Frozen Peas" outtakes are replaced. "Go down on you" becomes "make cheese for you," the first "shit" becomes "shoot," and "a load of shit" becomes "a load of tripe."
  • The Cameo:
    • Just before Pinky and the Brain arrive at the recording studio, the Warners run out of it, with Ralph in pursuit.
    • Several of the show's production staff appear in caricature form (Tom Ruegger, Peter Hastings, voice director Andrea Romano, and sound engineer Harry Adronis). As soon as the Brain arrives, he kicks out everyone but Adronis, saying that Pinky will direct the commercials.
      Romano: But...
Brain: I take direction from one person under protest. But from two, I don't sit still. Now, go!
  • Is This Thing Still On?: This trope ensues when the Brain is arguing with Pinky about how the lines should be read.
Brain: The right reading for this is the one I'm giving it.
Pinky: [in a low voice, to Adronis] At the moment.
    Brain: I heard that.
[Pinky gives an embarrassed giggle as he realizes he's standing on the intercom button.]
  • Tempting Fate: After the third argument over the lines, Brain has had enough and tells Pinky, "If you want this done, you'll just have to find some actor who does... impressions." He stalks out, only to see a crowd of mice getting ready to audition for the part of the Brain.
[Brain's eyes widen in horror. He slams the door and dashes back up to the microphone.]
Brain: On second thought, fellas... let's try it again, shall we?
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To Orson Welles' infamous "Frozen Peas" outtakes, which are quoted nearly verbatim here; this is also a reference to how Welles was the main inspiration for the Brain's voice. Some swears are replaced with nicer sounding words, and the phrase "go down on you" is replaced with "make cheese for you."

Closing Tower Gag: "Chowabunga!"- Yakko, Wakko, and Dot

Yes, Actually

The whole plot of the "Yes, Actually" sketch, is a parody of Orson Welles' infamous Frozen Peas Outtakes, with the lines being quoted nearby verbatim. Fitting as the Brian's voice was modelled after Welles himself.

How well does it match the trope?
