Recap / American Dad S 20 E 14 Multiverse Of American Dadness

Go To

Steve travels the multiverse to find a better sister.

Tropes:

  • Animate Inanimate Object: In one universe, Steve is a bowl. In another, Stan is the flag on their lawn.
  • Asshole Victim: Evil Steve gets run over by a car. Given that he was hunting and killing every single of his counterpart, he will not be missed.
  • The Constant: Shaggy is the one constant across all universes. To the point that killing one of him threatens to collapse the whole multiverse.
  • Cool Big Sis: The alternate Hayley we meet in the opening is this to her Steve.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Evil Steve was built up as a huge threat at the beginning of the episode, but when he goes to kill the main Steve, he instantly dies when Principal Lewis accidentally runs him down with his car.
  • Gender Flip: In one universe, Steve falls in love with a female version of Snot.
  • High-Class Glass: Exposition Lewis wears a monocle, befitting his highly intelligent nature.
  • Interdimensional Travel Device: Travel between universes is facilitated by a wrist device that works by turning the butthole into a black hole and sucking the body into it. Consequently, all travel between universes sounds like a drawn out fart.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Francine mentions that Stan has a brother who's barely even canon.
  • Me's a Crowd: One universe is populated entirely by Barry copies.
  • Meet Your Early-Installment Weirdness: Hayley and another Hayley end up fighting across the multiverse. One of them is a universe where the show retains its early humor, animation style, and even aspect ratio. It's described as a universe where satire was effective.
  • Mr. Exposition: Exposition Lewis, who pops in and out to explain things.
  • The Multiverse: The entire premise of the episode. Starting with an alternate Steve killing Steve.
  • Negative Continuity: After the alternate Steve is killed, we go to what a caption confirms is the main universe of the show, barring Christmas episodes and "a few others," thereby establishing episodes like "Hot Water," "Rabbit Ears," and "A Roger Story" take place in alternate continuities.
  • Race Lift: Hayley visits two universes where Steve is black.
  • Swapped Roles: In at least one universe, Steve is the older sibling while Hayley is a little girl.
  • Take That!: At one point, Exposition Lewis has to leave to explain to someone why people like Wes Anderson, but admits it's the one thing he doesn't know.
  • Tempting Fate: Vengeance Lewis hopes that the next Steve on Evil Steve's list is a badass. Turns out it's our Steve, who's getting cramps while drawing schematics.
