Recap / American Dad! S19E7 "Beyond the Alcove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Klaus"

Go To

Francine notices that people suddenly love Klaus, only to discover it's not because people genuinely like him.

Tropes:

  • Attention Whore: Francine and Klaus. Francine even says at one of her parties that they should be paying attention to her instead of Klaus, and it escalates to the point where she tries dancing drunk on the roof of the house in a Stars and Stripes bikini. Klaus, on the other hand, steals Francine’s spotlight and hypnotises everyone in town into loving him.
  • The Bore: Knowing Klaus's predilection for rambling stories about the miscellaneous crap in his life, Francine is shocked that people actually find Klaus engaging. After the hypnotism plot is revealed, she uses an old podcast episode to expose him as this to his enthralled victims.
  • Car Cushion: When Francine falls off the roof, a crash and a car alarm is heard.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The Mark Wahlberg-inspired training Klaus puts Francine through helps her free everyone from his control, including the self-defence moves and IT training.
    • Klaus’s “Klaus of Hearts” podcast, which Francine uses at the end to show Klaus as The Bore.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Parker Deay. Francine mentions him briefly in the opening scene while planning her upcoming party and he can be seen there talking to Jeff, then he rescues Francine near the end and tells her how she can free Langley Falls from Klaus’s control.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She may be setting out to free people from Klaus's control, but even Francine can't help being charmed by and wanting to play with Parker's cats.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Francine angrily wraps Stan up in dental floss and calls him an idiot early on in the episode. She also disarms and kicks him in the climax. At another point she (along with Roger) forces an unwilling Greg into a keg stand.
  • Egopolis: Klaus turns Langley Falls into this after the two-month Time Skip.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The Mark Walhberg-inspired training Klaus put Francine through, particularly the parts involving basic technological know-how, helps her free everyone from his control.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Klaus is so starved for affection that he has to hypnotise everyone in Langley Falls into loving him, then he remakes the town in his image.
  • Just Between You and Me: Klaus explains to Francine how he's been able to hypnotize people into liking him and ultimately controlling them.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: A small moment happens in the climax, where Francine disarms and kicks Stan to disable him, wearing her normal pink dress and heels.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Francine when Klaus reveals to her he can hypnotise her using an air horn, which he proceeds to do.
    • Francine when Roger outs her in the crowd as not loving Klaus, causing them to turn on her.
    • Klaus at the end, when Francine broadcasts footage of his “Klaus of Hearts” podcast to the people of Langley Falls, outing him as The Bore.
  • Precision F-Strike: Klaus’s Oh, Crap! moment at the end has him saying "Oh, shit."
  • The Resenter: Francine’s resentment of Klaus is the backbone of the episode.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The full title is a reference to Dr. Strangelove.
    • Klaus references Get Out in order to explain the hypnosis process. Unfortunately, Francine hadn't seen the film. She has seen Parasite (2019), which Klaus admits has nothing to do with his plot but still brought up because he likes it - although a secret underground room is something both Parasite and this episode feature.
    • After taking over Langley Falls, there are posters of Klaus that say "OBEY", a nod to They Live!.
    • Seeing that Francine isn't under hypnosis, people point at her and shriek "Klaaaaaaaaaus!", similar to the pod scream from the ending of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Francine tries to get people’s attention by getting drunk and jumping off the house's roof. She loses her balance, falls off the roof, lands on a car and has to be hospitalised.
  • Trigger Phrase: Klaus has a code phrase to snap people out of the trance, which is "Enough with the hypnotism already!"
  • Unseen No More: Hayley's friend Nerfer, who'd been mentioned several times before this point, finally appears in the flesh.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: After a two-month Time Skip, Francine wakes up in a cowboy tub in an Airbnb rented by Roger.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Jeff spends at least half the episode dressed in a French maid outfit and high heels. No one bats an eye at this other than Francine asking if Klaus had hypnotised Jeff (which he had).
