Tropes A to D | Tropes E to J | L to O | Tropes P to S | Tropes T to Z

  • Large Ham: Several characters tend to act over-the-top and dramatic when it comes to Pokémon battles, especially Holly when she's taking on a Gym Leader.
  • The Leader: Tank is this to the trio (is the peacekeeper and makes most of the decisions for food and staying the night). When Frank and Apollo join them, Apollo is delegated as the leader due to being the champion.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: The trio do this in chapter eleven. Tank goes with a nature trail, Holly fights underneath the Cycling Road, and Kidd swims through the water.
  • Lost in Translation: In-universe. Holly doesn't get why the croquette place is called Rolling Hearts Cafe. Tank explains it but it's still lost. Here's why: Croquettes in Japanese are called Korokke. Kokoro (heart) and korokoro (onomatopoeia for round thing rolling) start similarity to korokke.
  • Luminescent Blush: The trio get this a lot around each other, almost bordering on Crush Blush. This fades away after the trio are confident in their relationship.
  • Ma'am Shock: Judy has one after Tank asks who she is ("For crying out, I just turned thirty!")
  • Mama Bear: Petalburg Woods has a female Ariados who does not take kindly to a Froslass ripping up her web, stopping her from catching prey for her babies to eat.
  • Meaningful Rename:
    • Dawnheart and Giorgio, the Zangoose and Seviper in chapter nineteen, get renamed 'Oscar' and 'Andre' after they leave their clans and get caught by Tank.
    • Ultima the Pikachu was renamed to 'Aries' after she gets a new trainer.
    • In chapter 42, Benedict comes out as a trans girl and starts going by Holly. Her chosen name was foreshadowed as early as chapter 5.
  • Melting-Pot Nomenclature: The Hoenn region is highly diverse in the names of its residents, with characters like Deirdre Morikawa, Tank Pepper, or Coco Haniwa all being native to the region.
  • Miko: Mt. Pyre has a Shinto-esque shrine resembling a torii. Because of this, there's a pair of miko (Snooty and Wendy) who tend to the shrine and end up getting attacked by Cottage and Pastel.
  • Military Brat: Tank's dad is a sergeant, as seen in several flashbacks. Tank is more calm and leads the way for his group.
  • Minecart Madness: In chapter thirty-one, the main characters are stuck riding a minecart after a wild Loudred pushes it. Unfortunately for them, it crashes and the group are flung out of the cart.
  • Missing Mom: Sunny Grenounille (Croque's and Cousteau's mom, and Frobert's grandma). She was an explorer who went into the Route 111 desert and didn't come back alive.
  • Molotov Cocktail: To escape a room full of wild Parasect, Frank makes one with cheap grain alcohol and throws it at the old Safari Zone building. The item’s referred to as a kaenbin, the Japanese term.
  • Mondegreen Gag: No, Holly, a croquette does NOT have Croagunk in it.
  • Mons as Characterization: Benedict/Holly, the main protagonist, has a well-rounded team with mons that reflect on different aspect of their personality. For example, their Gardevoir symbolizes their growing confidence with expressing femininity, their Gyarados represents recklessness and their Blaziken reflects on their battle-happy nature and fire motifs.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: The Ariados who resides in Petalburg Woods is initially presented as aggressive and a threat towards the protagonists. In a later chapter, she's revealed to be a protective mother who joins the protagonists due to a Froslass destroying her net.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Apollo is the resident fanservice character. He's very muscular, is seen wearing stylish and revealing clothing, and has starred in several adult magazines. He also has an active sex life with his longtime boyfriend Wolfgang.
  • Multinational Team: The main characters are a trio of trainers from different regions: Kidd (Kalosian), Tank (Hoennian), and Holly (Hoennian/Galarian, born and raised Unovan). Cultural differences are highlighted through the series i.e. Kidd trying to order wine, Holly's hotblooded personality getting her into fights, and Tank happily teaching the group about Hoennian culture.
  • Musical Theme Naming: There's several characters throughout the work who are named after music the author listens to:
  • Mushroom Samba: The trio eat Oren Berries instead of Oran Berries, and end up tripping balls in the middle of Route 119. They start seeing things change colors and flowers/smoke/bubbles float around them, then start snickering at a black cloud in the sky. However it's implied the black cloud is real and not a hallucination.
  • Must Have Nicotine: Frank is seen smoking frequently. It's confirmed that he started smoking just after Belladonna's death.
  • Mythology Gag: Has enough examples for its own page.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Very few characters in Animal Crossing have last names. Here, multiple characters get last names:
    • The protagonists: Holly (formerly known as Benedict) Sussex, Tank Pepper and Kidd Chavignol.
    • Frank and Apollo Hawkwind.
    • Antagonist team members: Dobie Lupus, Beau and Fauna Buckingham, Judy Nebula, Filbert Berenice, Julian Galassia, and Deirdre Morikawa.
    • Every gym leader: Coco Haniwa, Frobert Grenounille, Static Cumulus, Phoebe Crossfire, Butch Reid, Celia Carlisle, Chrissy and Francine Diamandis, and Klaus Arkadios.
      • Gym trainers too: Bella Explosion, Tammi Summer, Cherry Jett, Skye Nicks, etc..
    • Kapp'n is a nickname, his real name is Kaisho Kobayashi. His mother (Grams) is named Kanako.
    • The cast of Crossing Rider Go: Ichiro Mochizuki (Kid Cat), Hatsuko Fujiwara (Agent S), Kenzo Izuri (Big Top), Clover Hart (Rocket) and Kohaku Chiba (Filly).
    • Minor characters get this treatment too: Graham Hodges (an employee for Hawkwind Corp), Elvis Crimson (the Fare Prince Trenchman of Mauville City's Food Court), Zell Garcia (a hotel receptionist), Lottie and Lyle Seariver (a family of otters), etc.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Several side characters get last names from famous people:
    • The cast of Crossing Rider Go get their last names from various Super Sentai actors.
    • Wolfgang's last name is LeBon.
  • The Napoleon: Judy of Team Pastel is shorter than the protagonists, but she has the aggression/confidence of someone twice her height).
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: The Hawkwind "cousins". Apollo is the Champion, and is more distinguished and polite, compared to Frank's crudeness, swearing, and frequent smoking.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: This is how Olivia (the mother of the Kachinekos) laughs during battle. A Froslass in chapter 34 does this as well.
  • Noodle Incident: Holly has several of these from her Castelia days, ranging from when she got suspended from school for beating up a teacher to when her dad used her Poké Scout membership fees for gambling.
  • No Party Like a Donner Party: What happened in the Mirage Tower. Decades ago, a group of explorers got lost finding Regirock. Regirock killed half the party, and the other half were lost for a while. First they ate their Pokémon, THEN drew straws on who to eat. And sure enough, Sunny drew the short straw and was heavily cannibalized.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Tank is the most physical with his affection, and gives the tightest hugs.
  • No Snack for You: In the Coraltree Park, Kidd tries to buy some drinks from a vending machine. While the machine did take his money, the power went out before it can give him a single drink. He and Aries try to shake the drinks out.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Holly nearly falls to her death here, but is caught to safety thanks to Libra evolving and her telekinetic powers getting stronger.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Kidd is the Mean (most sarcastic and insulting), Tank is the Nice (especially seen when helping out Leila), and Holly is the In-Between (is impulsive and snarks here and there, but shows respect to Pokemon and their trainers after battles).
  • The Nicknamer: Most prominent trainers do this with their Pokémon, including the main characters, gym leaders, even Champion Apollo and Professor Nook!
  • An Odd Place to Sleep:
    • The trio sleep on/nearby a park bench in chapter five, then the rooftops of Mauville in chapter twelve, and THEN under a picnic table in chapter thirty.
    • Holly jokes about sleeping in the bathtub in chapter nineteen, Frank snarks back about being more of a bathroom rug guy.
  • Odd Name Out: The Crossing Rider Go cast members: Ichiro Mochizuki (Kid Cat), Hatsuko Fujiwara (Agent S), Kenzo Izuri (Big Top), Clover Hart (Rocket) and Kohaku Chiba (Filly). Justified since Crossing Rider Go is a Kantonian production, and Four Is Death is in effect. This is why they get a Unovan (Clover Hart) to play the fourth cast member.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Despite being a former veteran, Rockwell is happy to hear that Tank gained two romantic partners during his journey and immediatly treats them as family.
  • One of the Girls: A pre-transition variant. It's mentioned in a chapter seven flashback that Holly's friends were all girls. Later confirmed with the arrival of Flora, and it's implied Holly didn't have any male friends before Kidd and Tank.
  • Old Friend, New Gender: Amber (an older trainer who helps teach Holly's Aron the move Bulldoze) is revealed to be a family friend of the Peppers. She started transitioning not long after the Fortree City incident.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: Inverted. Dolly is the only kindergarten student who doesn’t like being at the Pokémon Day Care.
  • Original Character: Several side characters in the story aren't based on any existing Animal Crossing character:
    • Most of these are relatives of villagers (i.e. the trio's parents, Butch's daughter Dolly, Phoebe's father Kenneth, and Tom and Sable's future children.
    • A few Pastel and Cottage grunts are original to the fic.
    • A few others include Bruno the dog and Chad the sheep (Holly's classmates from her Castelia days).
  • Otaku: All three of the main characters. Kidd has anime charms on his messenger bag and reads a doujinshi on the boat to Dewford, Holly nicknames her Pokémon after manga characters and Tank's frequently seen buying and reading manga.
  • Outdated Outfit: Team Cottage grunts dress in an outdated style (button-ups and waistcoats for the men, blouses and long pinafore dresses for the women).
    • This is also the first clue Sunny is a ghost. She dresses like a vintage explorer.
