Being a fic that crosses over two large franchises, there's bounds to be plenty of references to both media.

    Animal Crossing 
  • Littleroot Town has a Shinto shrine in the middle of town, like in the GameCube installment.
  • Tom Nook introduces the starters to the boys by saying "What new horizons do you see yourselves reaching"
  • Mauville City was recently renovated for a growing population.
  • Dewazon Market is one to the fan website Nookazon. It even takes payment in tickets (a reference to the NMT system of New Horizons)
  • Tamako (Holly's mom) is a fan of playing Eevee Crossings
  • Tom Nook and Sable being married is a reference to the Ship Tease they have in older games.
  • Tucker is a wooly mammoth (an extinct species). That's why he shows up in the Rustboro Gym (which is built like a museum).
  • A few villagers will say their catchphrases from the games. The gym slogans have this on their plaques i.e. "the surfing king, fribbit".
  • Frobert having a crush on Gracie is one for his house request ("A shrine to all things Gracie.").
  • Apollo being swarmed by wolf girls is a call-back to his relationship with Whitney the wolf. He even talks to her in one chapter.
  • The April Fool's guide from New Leaf is referenced several times:
    • Tank is shown in drawing in chapter eight— his goal is to be a cartoonist!
    • Holly was revealed to be part of a literature club— fitting someone who wants to be a poet!
    • Kidd shows skills in braiding hair, referencing his goal to be a hair stylist.
  • The book Kapp'n reads is a reference to one of his New Leaf songs ("Oh cucumber, you're not a pewcumber")
  • The tuxedo Kidd wears for the Slateport contest is a real outfit in New Horizons.
  • The bouquet Holly grabbed is filled with every flower available in New Horizons.
  • Tortimer is the mayor of Mauville City, referencing his previous role as mayor in the pre-New Leaf games. Also Tortimer wears his Pocket Camp outfit.
  • The Mauville City ceremony is a direct reference to the New Leaf public works projects.
  • Whereabouts of Brewster Cafe (The Roost) are asked about (also a reference to a frequent complain of New Horizons).
  • Tank buys a copy of Desert Island Diary along with a story starring the Princess of Rocketboarding
  • When alone in the Fiery Path, Flora sings Bubblegum K.K. lyrics.
  • Cesar and Cyrano are a married couple, as a reference to their friendship in the movie.
  • The Forest Life restaurant is named after the KK Slider song.
  • The store Spring Blossoms is also named after a K.K. Slider song.
  • Canberra is the owner of a ramen joint in Lavaridge Town. In Happy Home Paradise, she asks for an international restaurant.
  • Norma (a pink cow villager) is a teacher at Petalburg Elementary. In the New Leaf April Fools' Guide, her goal is to be a teacher.
  • Sable is seen wearing her HHD dress.
  • In the Verdanturf Pokémon Center, Tank is seeing drawing the Surfin' K.K. album cover.
  • Reese and Cyrus are seen getting married in chapter 29. New Horizons has a whole event where the player can use Photopia to make wedding photos for them. Cyrus even threatens Kidd for "makin' goo-goo eyes at my girl".
  • Star Fragment is the name of a candy brand that Holly buys in one chapter.
  • In the first gaiden, Hopper (the rowdy concertgoer) yells "Yeah lose the shorts!"
  • Alice runs a thrift store, a reference to her Happy Home Paradise request ("An Antique Cottage").
  • Wolfgang is a journalist, just like his New Leaf dream job.
  • In one chapter, Tank dresses up as the male New Leaf player.
  • Zell works at a hotel in Mauville City. In Happy Home Paradise, he requests a hotel theme for his vacation house.
  • K.K. Slider performs "Go K.K. Rider" in front of adoring fans.
  • Sheldon (an orange jock squirrel) is the mayor of Fortree City. In New Leaf, his dream job is "mayor".
  • Tarou's journal about the Safari Zone is directly based on Nook's log from The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing.
  • One of the Lilycove parks features a flower clock with pansies, tulips and cosmos.
  • Pavé sings K.K. Samba (a song in which he's associated with) in a gay bar.
  • Nan, a black goat villager, works in a bed/breakfast. In Happy Home Paradise, she requests a luxury hotel for her vacation home.
  • The Animal Crossing movie is referenced as an actual film that starred Rosie, Margie and Apollo.
  • Fauna's parents get rid of her piano for something as minor as not helping Beau with his homework. In the Happy Home games she requests a house with a piano.

    Pokémon 

Main series games

  • Apollo starring in several dirty magazines is a reference to "The Fame and the Shame: Champions Exposed!"
  • Just like in ORAS, the trainers' adventures begin with rescuing someone from a wild Poochyena.
  • Teddy's rambling about shiny Pokemon facts? Taken right from the games (even with the Masuda Method and Cute Charm glitch)
  • Tank gets a Makuhita from a trade in Rustboro City, just like in the Hoenn games.
  • Porter takes on the gym guide role in the Rustboro Gym. Gym guides do hand out Fresh Water in Unova (the region Holly is from).
  • One Rustboro Gym trainer taunts Holly by saying "You're light years away from Coco!"
  • The Team Pastel and Cottage grunt numbers are also National Dex numbers of Pokemon they use.
  • Most of the Pokédex references are ones to ORAS entries with a few exceptions (i.e. Hariyama being referred to as an 'absolute unit'). Later chapters retire dex entries in general.
  • The group battles a horde of Zubat inside Granite Cave, where Zubat hordes frequently spawn.
  • Flora's outfit is based on Rosa's, fitting two energetic Unova girls.
  • Tammi (a model in an Electric type gym) taunts her opponent by saying "Are you ready?"
  • The Mauville City cafe is a reference to the Pokémon Center Cafe from Pokémon Sun and Moon.
  • The three Team Cottage grunts in chapter sixteen are named after the Japanese names of several Team Magma members: Hokage, Homura and Matsu
  • Frank's backstory includes the Mt. Stark event, right down to having a meddling Croagunk.
  • Gyarados's Pokedex entry references the Red Gyarados arc.
  • Holly's not the first trainer to go riding on a Gyarados.
  • The Spoink ritual is a reference to the dancing Clefairy of Mt. Moon.
  • Phoebe and Tank are both fans of the all-Pokémon band the Maximizers.
  • Phoebe isn't the only Gym Leader to utilize the move Attract on her last Pokémon.
  • Electabuzz's Ultra Moon entry states "While it's often blamed for power outages, the truth is the cause of outages is more often an error on the part of the electric company." And what Pokémon causes the conflict for chapter 27? It's an Electivire, its evolved form.
  • A Stantler and a Rufflet strut around the Day Care fields together.
  • Verdanturf Town isn't the only town to have its resident 'nurse' compete in a Pokemon contest.
  • While in a minecart, Holly mentions her experience with the Nimbasa City rollercoasters.
  • Coco nicknames her new Anorith 'Tsutsuji' (gym leader Roxanne's Japanese name).
  • Fortree City isn't the first city to have a Grass-type gym leader with a Roserade and a connection to the supernatural.
  • The gang makes curry during camping, a direct reference to Sword and Shield's Pokémon camp.
  • Route 121 takes inspiration from Crimson Mirelands, right down to the aggressive wild Parasect.
  • The password to get into a Slateport speakeasy is Goldeen needs a log? Yes, no, it’s for Chansey.
