The Exploding Heads Horror Movie Podcast exactly that, a horror movie podcast started by Dave Zee (Bananalaser podcast) and featuring Christian Luciani (Thank God It’s Friday the 13th Podcast) and Brandon Orlick (the new guy to podcasting). Starting at the tail end of 2015, the EH crew set out to talk about horror films old and new, and discuss their personal and honest opinions on each film. Hilarity Ensues.

The way they set up their podcast is simple. They give a rating from 1 to 10 out of 10. If it reaches 28 or above its in the Hall of Fame. If it reaches 9 or lower it’s on the Hall of Lame. Their ratings also have special names, mostly attached to newer movies, though they have rated older movies with these as well:

  • Full Head Explosion: The movie was so good that they’d not only rewatch it again and again, but they highly recommend it to viewers.
  • Half Head Explosion: The movie wasn’t as satisfying as expected, but still a good watch and worth checking out.
  • Mild Rumble with Nose & Ear Bleeding: The movie is either still good or So Okay, It's Average. There’s some good merit to it, but overall it’s not worth investing into it at the time being.
  • Imploded Head: The movie was just plain bad and not worth checking out unless you’re extremely curious, though very rarely does this rating come to play.

The Exploding Heads Horror Movie Podcast contains examples of:

  • Accentuate the Negative: For the most part, averted. They’re willing to give any film a chance regardless of its reputation and will give it merit for what they do right. That said, if said film is that bad, they won’t hold back on why they think it’s bad.
  • Aerith and Bob: Christian Luciani, Brandon Orlick...and Dave Zee.
  • Berserk Button:
    • It’s best not to remind them of Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, a film they rated the lowest on the whole show. note
    • Don’t mention some of the bad franchise films like Halloween: Resurrection, Saw 3D and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday for example or Dave Zee will rant about how terrible they are. The latter especially as he believes it was made to troll the fanbase.
    • Dave also isn’t too keen on certain films, despite the overwhelming negative reactions beforehand, all the sudden getting Vindicated by History by a large group of people just because it is or is getting a new Blu-ray release.
      • In the same vein, don’t bring up Spookies in front of Christian, especially since it got a Blu-ray release instead of films like Argento’s Sleepless.
    • Dave also has issues with Jason Voorhees having accessories, such as the tool belt and gloves in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives and a jacket in Freddy vs. Jason.
    • Brandon isn’t big on cheap fan service moments just for the sake of having them as he feels it doesn’t make up for a bad script.
    • Christian despises the concept of the asshole character you’re rooting to die, especially in slasher films as he want to see characters you care for.
    • Played for laughs when Brandon calls Christian a French-Canadian, remarking that it’s never wise to label a non French-Canadian as one.
  • Butt-Monkey: They bust each other’s balls a lot on the show, but Brandon gets hit the most with this status. In the span of the whole show’s run, he became Black Phillip’s bottom bitch, has been compared to Edward Cullen due to his skin being so pale, takes more cocks than he could handle, enjoys movies often the other hosts even dislike and chose Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood as is favorite horror film of 1988.
Dave Zee: I have a fuckin’ nose for shit.
    Christian: Why’s Brandon here then?
  • Catchphrase: "Alright, alright!", which Dave Zee says at the beginning of every episode.
  • Covers Always Lie: Dave admits he’s not a big fan of the Nightmare On Elm Street posters as his fellow hosts are as to him, they’re inaccurate to what the film’s were.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The earlier episodes didn’t incorporate a numbered rating system note  or labeling the names of the ratings note  of the movies until Episode 7. Before it was just simple, highly recommend, not recommended style of rating.
  • Fan Boy: Of the horror genre in general, but especially the Friday the 13th series as at least one film from that series was their gateway into the slasher genre. Outside of slashers however, each of the hosts have their own things they love.
  • Fan Hater:
    • Dave and his stance on goofy horror comedies like the Sharknado movies. While he doesn’t hate the fans for liking them per say, he does hate how they sometimes disregard actual, real horror films in favor of what he sees as the lowest common denominator of horror that gives the genre a bad name.
    • A meta example, the hosts believe that Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was made by people like this as a way to troll the hardcore fans.
Christian: It’s like he’s (Adam Marcus) saying Fuck You! I’m trying something different, but Fuck You fanboys and fangirls.
  • Freudian Trio:
    • Brandon (Id)
    • Dave Zee (Ego)
    • Christian (Super Ego)
  • Gorn: The guys love as much of it, especially in slasher movies.
  • In Name Only: Dave’s biggest problems with films like Saw 3D and The Final Destination is that they felt less like actual films of their respective franchises and more like knockoffs that cash in on their success.
  • Large Ham: All three hosts are as serious in discussing horror movies as they are goofy towards each other.
  • Only in It for the Money: Played for laughs anytime they mention their Patreon account.
    Brandon: Join us on www.giveusyourfuckingmoney.com.
  • Papa Wolf: Dave 110%. He’s mentioned many times he’d go out of his way to make sure his daughter is healthy and safe as much as possible.
  • Running Gag:
  • Take That!:
    • Anytime they reference Halloween: Resurrection or Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, they refer to them as Halloween: Colon Resurrectum and The Piece of Shit (dis)respectfully.
    • At one point in the Friday the 13th Retrospective Part 2, Dave Zee refers to Adam Marcus as A-Dumb Marcus.
