This page catalogs memes and catchphrases repeated often by the members of the Fighting Game Community.
- "Rare footage of Daigo actually angry..."note Spoken by a post-match EVO commentator moments before Daigo pulled off his signature comeback against Justin Wong.
- "Let's go, Justin!" note Another quote from Daigo's signature comeback, which was uttered by a member of the crowd just as Justin Wong's Chun-li performed her super. Unlike the above, however, this is actually said by the live commentator within the match.
- "Diego Umejuarez"note Referring to the time when Daigo Umehara wore a fake thick mustache just for fun, with his name being converted to the nearest-sounding Gratuitous Spanish by fans. This gets brought up again whenever someone mispronounces Daigo's name as "Diego", such as in some Core-A-Gaming videos.
- "It's MAH-VEL BAYBEE!"note IFC Yipes's legendary commentary on a game of Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
- "No Items! Fox Only! Final Destination!"note A common stereotype regarding the rulesets used in competitive Smash Bros. play, which strive to eliminate 'randomness' in any one given match. Ironically, Final Destination is not considered an ideal stage for Fox (or even his clone Falco) in most matchups.
- "What are you standing up for?" note Spoken by commentator UltraDavid after the player Wolfkrone stood up and cheered in the middle of an animation for an Ultra combo, despite not having won yet. His opponent, Ricky Ortiz, promptly finished him off. This would be used again at EVO 2015, after Guilty Gear player Woshige prematurely celebrated winning one round off of Ogawazato, only to realize the game was not over; Ogawa promptly finished him off before he could even pick up his stick and followed up with his own celebration at Woshige's expense.
- "Five golden letters!" note During Seasons Beatings Ascension, commentator Neo thought "perfect" was spelled with five letters, not seven. Since then, it is now the way of referencing a perfect, as opposed to the old "Seven golden letters!"
- "RUSSIAN SKIES PROTECTED" note Zangief player AquaSilk is well known for always trying to land Zangief's Ultra II, Siberian Blizzard, as a crowd/stream monster pleaser. The english ultra flash has Zangief say "I am the protector of Russian skies!" AquaSilk has been known to not end matches right away or even throw rounds in order to land it at least once.
- "When's Marvel?" note As arguably the most popular game to watch, it's not uncommon for stream monsters to ask "When's Marvel?" It has lead to permutations such as asking for a game that is not shown (sometimes poking fun that said game is "dead"), games that are not even fighting games, or asking "When's Marvel?" when Marvel is already on stream. Popular choices include "When's Ehrgeiz?", and "When's Bible Black?".
- "Haishina!" note Doctor Doom yells "Time to die!" when he uses his Level 3 Hyper Combo. In Japan, this sounds vaguely similar to the phrase "Haishina" which means "I am streaming now". The Japanese players tend to shout this whenever a Doom player uses the attack.
- "Download Complete!" note Adapting to an opponent's strategy is known as "downloading" them. When a player goes from struggling with an opponent to overwhelmingly dominating, commentators and watchers will often recite this line.
- "Got Pee'd On!": note When a Perfect is achieved on players in games like Street Fighter III and IV, a "P" icon appears to indicate it. Combined with a full bar (which is yellow), this create the "Pee'd On" meme. Also known as the "R. Kelly", thanks to the singer's infamous sex video that involved him urinating on an underage girl. Some streamers, viewers and commentators even sing the lyrics to Chappelle's Show's famous parody.
- "Put_Sagat_in_X": note Stream Monsters have made Sagat a Meme God by putting him in everything, ranging from Put_Sagat_in_UMVC3 to Put_Sagat_on_the_Fiscal_Cliff.
- "Wombo Combo" note Mainly used within the Smash Bros. community, but occasionally seen elsewhere. Used to describe a brutal yet flashy combo, generally able to take down an undamaged or lightly damaged opponent with style.
- "PS3 LAG" note ChrisG posted on Twitter during the NorCal Regionals 2013 tournament that he only lost a match to a relatively unknown player because of alleged slowdown on the PlayStation 3 console being used at that time, which prevented him from blocking the opponent's randomly thrown out super move, with other top players defending him as well. Since then, a Dark Horse Victory or a random super that connects may be blamed on "PS3 lag".
- "Check out my Dormammu, dawg!" note A line making fun of player Filipino Champ, who plays one of the best Dormammus in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 but his overconfidence causes him to not pick the character in some tournaments, often leading to his downfall. "______, dawg!" has become a memetic Verbal Tic when making fun of Champ.
- "RAW ASS!"note A meme created, yet again, by IFC Yipes. Shouted when a Marvel 3 player performs a basic Launcher attack, without canceling from a combo (raw), which is performed with the "S" (ass) button. The name also comes from the fact that this attack is very unsafe, leaving the attacker's "raw ass" hanging out if blocked.
- "Collusion!"note A meme mocking accusations of a player Throwing the Fight. These accusations are occasionally made in tournament or high stakes matches, the idea being that the players are only phoning in a token effort while secretly agreeing to split the winnings. This meme is invoked whenever a player plays uncharacteristically badly, chooses a character that isn't their main, and when a DoubleKnockout happens.
- "ALL OF IT!" note A popular Killer Instinct term commentators use that highlights when a player is able to fully land their combos without them getting broken.
- "Behave Yourself!" note First said by Street Fighter IV player/Commentator Lee Chung and later became popular within the scene. It's said whenever a player is dominating their opponent so badly, they start doing high risk flashy combos to showoff. This can often backfire with the combo dropping and the opponent coming back to win the round.
- "Any amount!" note Popularized by MvC3 player Cole "Flux" Tocci, where, after losing a match to an opponent during one NLBC tournament, he angrily yelled, "I will play you right now for money, any amount!"
- "Set Play wins EVO 2015!"note Following KaneBlueRiver's victory at EVO 2015, there are many complaints that competitive Marvel is built too much around "set play". That is, teams and strategies designed to overwhelm the opponent in a quick two or three game set, quickly killing off point characters and putting the next character in nigh-indefensible mixups so that the entire set goes by before the opponent even knows what happened.
- "Only a REAL/TRUE master!"note When a player is on the wrong side of a Curbstomp Battle and their health is critically low while their opponent is significantly healthy, commentators will declare these odds that only a true master could come back from. Meme or otherwise, it's happened often enough to cause genuine excitement.
- "Got ourselves a real match!"note An older meme (dating from at least the early 2000s) which describes a one-sided match that has become somewhat even again. It's typically saved for games with the potential to drastically pull ahead such as tag games like Marvel and King of Fighters or long rounds/matches like Killer Instinct and Smash, where gaining a lead makes comebacks exponentially more difficult.
- "Happy birthday!" note A "happy birthday" occurs when a player knocks out more than one of his opponent's fighters at the same time in games that have tag mechanics. It was coined when a player did this repeatedly in a Marvel vs. Capcom tournament that was held on his birthday, prompting the crowd to shout "happy birthday!" every time it happened.
- Nearly everything that comes out of LowTierGod's mouth, usually in a mocking or derisive way. Most notably are "GET THAT ASS BANNED!" (said whenever LTG bans someone from his Youtube stream, usually for petty reasons) or anything from his infamous "BBC Rant," which can be seen here.
- "Thuggery" note A term used to describe anything that happens in the FGC which is seen as inappropriate. Became popular in 2016 when the Capcom Pro Tour, sponsors, and other elements of the FGC created new rules against things they feel would negatively effect their image in e-sports as the community grows.
- "8 Frames" note Made popular by Zangief player, Darryl "Snake Eyez" Lewis, who noticed there was input lag between the PC (which he plays the game on) and PS4 version of Street Fighter V. The PS4 version was the worst of the two at 8 frames of input lag. Professionals tested this and confirmed Snake Eyez was right. Since then, many players have complained about Capcom not fixing the issue yet. While some players believe the "8 Frames" is an excuse other players are using for why they're doing bad at the game.
- "Not Like This..." note Often said by commentators when something unsporting, heartbreaking, or just plain humiliating happens that makes one player sure to lose a match. For example, a player drops a combo that would have sealed a match, allowing the opponent to come back and win. In text form, it's sometimes spelled without spaces (NotLikeThis) due to Twitch emote named this way.
- "THE CHINGER CHANGER NIGGER DAGGER" note During one of his live streams, Maximilian Christianson was screaming random gibberish every time he scored a kill in For Honor. At one point he accidentally slipped and said the aforementioned phrase in an attempt to say "Ginger Ninja." This has resulted in not only the phrase itself becoming a meme, but also depictions of Max as a racist or white supremacist.
- "Your behave is just fuck"note Mark Julio a.k.a. markman23, who was at the time working for MadCatz, once got hounded with messages asking about arcade sticks, resulting in him telling the person to stop and informing the offending person that he's sold out of Xbox 360 sticks. Dejected, the sender left, but not before signing off with the phrase "Your behave is just fuck". Mark posted about this, informing others that they should not message him like that. Talis Baltgalvis, from the web design company A Graphic Advantage!, approached Mark asking if he could produce T-shirts based off of the infamous phrase. Mark gave the OK and the T-shirt became an instant hit overnight.
- "UGH-HA UGH-HA UGH-HA!"note Another meme created by IFC Yipes, this one is an affectionate parody of the way his fellow New York FGC player Arturo "TS Sabin" Sanchez laughs. Sanchez has a very nasally voice, with a laugh very reminiscent of a coughing sound. The stream monsters have pretty much settled upon "UGH-HA!" as being the correct way to type the sound.
- "AKAR AKAR AKAR"note A copypasta depicting Arturo Sanchez was played live on stream during Next Level Battle Circuit using a British voice program, becoming viral not long after.
- "You are all free now!"note Team Sp00ky uses this Narmtastic line to close out EVO.
- "Can't Escape From Crossing Fate!": note The intro statement made before every match in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has quickly become a popular saying used to point out that any potential drama between people will eventually happen, no matter how much one, or both sides try to avoid it. There are many video meme examples using past and present clips with the intro edited in along with Red Like Roses Part II, and its played for laughs.
- "Core Values": note Gained notoriety after an incident at EVO Japan 2019. What was supposed to be a demonstration by the Dead or Alive 6 team quickly turned borderline pornographic due to excessive Jiggle Physics. The demonstration caused the EVO staff to cut the broadcast before the demonstration was over. Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar apologized for the content, saying that this incident did not reflect EVO's 'Core Values'. Ever since, "core values" has been used as a meme every time something even mildly sexual shows up in the FGC.
- "I'm gay.": note SonicFox5000's Catchphrase. When detractors started to complain that Fox was shoving their sexuality down people's throats, both they and their supporters started saying it more frequently.
- "GOOD ASS TEKKEN!" note A saying coined by one time fighting game pro turned popular commentator and hype man, Tasty Steve. And it's said whenever and epic Tekken 7 match takes place, which to the game's credit, happens quite often, making Tekken 7 one of the most entertaining games to watch competitively.
- "He think he's Daigo? You ain't Daigo!" note In early January 2022, Justin Wong was streaming Third Strike when he came across an opponent using Ken who, to his surprise, replicated the exact moment of his defeat by Daigo's hand. Has becoming a running gag for Justin, who continues to throw out Chun-Li's Super Art in online play, leading to as of this post in August 2022, 15 Successful Super Art Parries against him, including one in Garou, one with a different Super for Chun Li, and two done in the same set by the same player, albeit with two different characters.
- AND THE CROWD EXCHANGES UNCOMFORTABLE GLANCES!! ExplanationDuring the Guilty Gear -STRIVE- finals at EVO 2023, it was Leffen vs NBHHMR, playing as Happy Chaos and Nagobiyuki respectively. As Leffen has a major ego and Happy Chaos is a broken character, many saw it as a Foregone Conclusion that he would win. When he did, there was a camera pass of the crowd and very few people where cheering, showcasing how much of a lopsided fight it was.
- [They] Need ItExplanation Any time a character comes across as a High-Tier Scrappy at best or an outright Game-Breaker at worst, expect this catchphrase to follow when it comes to That One Attack that contributes to their status as a top tier character. Can also be used even for Low Tier Letdowns who otherwise have an absurdly strong attack, too.
