Digimon was,
fittingly enough, there at the dawn of the internet's rise to mainstream, and while it could never live up to the level of popularity that
Pokémon had ingrained itself into, it was well-entrenched among
The '90s kids who grew up with the world wide web. And it also has a few memes to boast of.
Please add entries in the following format:
- The meme. [[labelnote: Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme, if necessary.[[/labelnote]] Explanation Like this.
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
- X DIGIVOLVE TOOOOOOOO... Y! Explanation The standard mode jump catchphrase is much beloved for the ridiculous term "digivolve" and the sheer ham required for the line.
- X SHINKAAAAAAAA... Y! Explanation The Japanese version of the above phrase.
- Digimon: Digital Monsters! Digimon are the Champions!Explanation The primary and almost sole lyric of the English show's Ear Worm of an opening song for three whole incarnations of the show.
- Digimon garlic Champions! Explanation A popular mishearing of the theme song.
- It's August 1st! Explanation Tai and the rest of the Digimon Adventure cast first went to the Digital World on that very date — you'll often see pictures of Tai freaking out next to a calendar with this one.
- Original Digimon Do Not Steal. Explanation Some fans noticed that Kaiser-Ken's creation of what he insisted was his "original Digimon" (Chimeramon) was similar to behavior of many people on DeviantArt.
- Gogglehead. Explanation The terminology of choice for any goggle-wearing leaders in Digimon ever since Rika started using it on Takato in Digimon Tamers.
- Leomon dies. Explanation Digimon Adventure had a heroic ally Leomon sacrifice himself (but Death Is Cheap in Adventure), and then Digimon Tamers had a heroic partner Leomon kick the bucket (and Death is not cheap in Tamers) and since then every major Digimon animation has had a lion-man somewhere bite the dust.
- Leomon is the Kenny of Digimon. Explanation Because of Leomon's horrible track record with staying alive, comparisons to Kenny McCormick, who's also well known for his many deaths, managed to spring up.
- Leomon lives! Explanation (spoilers) The trend was finally bucked in Digimon Adventure: (2020), where an ally Leomon managed to go through the entire season without dying once. Due to how notorious the species is for his constant deaths, the fandom made a huge deal over the fact that a Leomon finally lived the whole way through.
- Kouichi Kimura and gravity don't go hand in hand. That, and all of the fall-related puns are usually going down with him. Explanation Kouichi fell down a flight of stairs and angsts about it.
- This is a hen. This is Tai. This is Hentai. Any questions? Explanation Possibly one of the oldest Digimon memes, it's an image of a hen, Tai, and Tai with a hen on his head accompanied with the prior text.
- SEXY DYNAMITE Explanation Izume/Zoe was often the target of Fanservice in Digimon Frontier despite being twelve. In one episode, she's contemplating what swimsuit to wear with Imagine Spot depictions of her. The last one is her in a two-piece red number with "Sexy Dynamite" in the background.
- MOTHERFUCKER PUNCHES MEGA-LEVEL DIGIMONS IN THE FACE. Explanation On Masaru Daimon and his modus operandi.
- Masarudaimon. Explanation When read in English name order, Masaru Daimon's name sounds like a valid Digimon name. This, combined with his tendencies, leads to many jokes as well.
- When life gives you lemons, Data Squad gives you oranges instead.Explanation When the English dub of Savers was faced with a Mad Bomber Digimon called BomberNanimon, to distance itself from current events, it buckled down and created Citramon, a So Bad, It's Good Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo reference.
- Bear with it!!Explanation From episode 29 of Data Squad, where Thomas silences Marcus by shutting the latter's mouth with his hand and making a suggestive position in process. Yaoi Fangirls have some fun with this one.
- A/B Chips Only! +3/+4! Explanation The smartphone game Digimon Links has become notorious for people in multiplayer lobbies demand that only players with Digimon that have point/drop boosting chips join in.
- C=Cancel! Explanation Similar to above, it's not unheard of for lobbies to disband if a player tries to join in with either a low-level (often C rank) chip or no chip at all.
- MirageGaogamon Blind Mode Explanation A Fan Nickname given to MirageGaogamon Burst Mode due to his extremely poor accuracy in Digimon Links.
- MetalEtemon +4 Explanation MetalEtemon is notorious for being the worst Mega in Links. Due to this, he's become something of a Memetic Loser in the fandom.
- Whamon Explanation A Fan Nickname and play on the term "Whale" (funnily enough, there is a Digimon called Whamon). The nickname is used on people who spend large amounts of money on the game Digimon Links often to obtain rare items or high-level Digimon.
- Sora has a knife! Explanation In the fourth episode of Digimon Adventure: (2020), Sora holds up a knife and a rope, saying she's going to help build a raft. The image of Sora holding said knife made some small rounds shortly afterward. A good example:
- Angela Anaconda caused a divorce.◊Explanation Before screenings of Digimon: The Movie, viewers would initially be treated to a pre-movie short where the main characters of Angela Anaconda, another show airing on Fox Kids at the time, went to the theater to watch the movie in question. It became widely mocked as time went on, being lauded as one of the worst parts of the film both by those that enjoyed the film and those who didn't. It would eventually take on a life of its own when a 4chan user went on to post a greentext story where his parents took him to see the movie, only to be greeted by Angela and her friends and end up in an argument that would result in their divorce. It should be noted that, even though Angela Anaconda is the central focus of the story, the short itself still comes from Digimon: The Movie and is included in most home releases of the film.
- ZeedMillenniummon. Your argument is invalid.Explanation Due to the metaphysical and multi-universal nature of the titular mons combined with the franchise's rampant tendency to inflate Power Levels complete with power scaling, practically every discussion on which franchise's monsters are more powerful between rival Mon fandoms, especially Pokémon, often ends with ZeedMillenniummon being used as a benchmark as proof of Digimon's superiority in terms of power. It has gone to such an extent that ZeedMillenniummon is more known for putting down "who is stronger" arguments over his actual lore.
- Political Correctness! Explanation At the 2021 DigiFes (an event dedicated to Digimon), the cast of Digimon Tamers reunited to read an all new script written by Chiaki J. Konaka. What they read was a baffling story where the Tamers had to face off against the dangerous threat of "Political Correctness", who was able to weaponize "cancel culture" and destroy both the real and digital worlds. This rather blatant propaganda piece was met with derision and mockery from the Digimon community worldwide, from both sides of the issue, with plenty of fan art mocking the event. (Including one declaring that Angela Anaconda is now only the second most embarrassing thing to happen to Digimon)
