Woof Woof Story: I Told You To Turn Me Into a Pampered Pooch, Not Fenrir! (Wanwan Monogatari: Kanemochi no Inu ni Shite to wa Itta ga, Fenrir ni Shiro to wa Ittenee!) is a comedy isekai series of Light Novels written by Inumajin and illustrated by Kochimo. It follows the new life of overworked salaryman Ryouta Okami, whose dying wish was to be reborn as a pet dog and lounge around eating treats all day. And since Heaven was running a promotional campaign that day, that's exactly what he got.
Well, almost.
The goddess overseeing Ryouta's case- being more accustomed to the requests of gamers and would-be heroes- decided to add in a few 'perks'. Like a gigantic wolf body. And immortality. And a mouth laser.
Now Ryouta must struggle to keep the pretense that he is a normal dog, and with it his luxurious life.
The series was published from 2017 to 2020, with a total of seven volumes. The light novels and the manga adaptation were localized by Yen Press in February 2019.
This series includes the following tropes:
- Animal Talk: Of the "all animals except humans can understand each other" type. Textually, the characters are just growling/meowing/squeaking at each other, sounds followed by brackets indicating their meaning.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Lenowyrm fights back against Zenobia and Routa because they have attacked her, stolen from her, and peed on her floor. (She was initially willing to forgive the last two.)
- Better than Sex: Howling at a full moon, apparently.
I guess this is what you’d call postcoital clarity.
- Born of Magic: Young Fen wolves... coalesce... out of a light/essence that descends from the moon. After the process is over, they have perfectly normal physical bodies.
- Canis Major: Routa first gets the hint he’s not a normal dog when he looks in a mirror and realizes that he is much larger than his owner after only one month after his adoption. By the end of Volume 4, he can't fit through human doorways and is about three times the size of the biggest of the Fen wolves (who are also this trope).
- Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Fenwolf legend says that The Chosen One will have a silver pelt.
- Common Tongue: Lenowyrm tries speaking the language of "your people" to a human intruder, which was apparently in use... a thousand years ago. Linguistic drift over that time has rendered it complete gibberish.
- Cruel to Be Kind: Caving in the family pet's skull may seem harsh, but Zenobia is correct when she says 'domesticated' wolves are still dangerous
. Routa is the fantasy, sapient version of a wolf, but that doesn't necessarily make him seem less threatening.
- Fantastic Racism: The Fen wolves want to genocide humanity- although, to be fair, less out of personal desire than their idea of Gaia's Vengeance. Once they get a taste of human-made sausages they back down pretty quickly.
- Flock of Wolves: One reason Routa's charade goes unnoticed is the fact that just about every animal around has magic or capabilities impossible in Real Life. It is a fantasy world, after all.
- Food Porn: A vast amount of the narrative is spent describing the generous meals laid out for Routa and his attempts (legal or not) to get more.
- Heroic Lineage: Mary is descended from Routa, the human Hero (it's capitalized) who slew the Demon Lord a thousand years ago. Because of this, she is one of the seals that prevent the Demon Lord from returning.
- I Was Named "My Name": Ryouta becomes Routa according to his new owners, which he lampshades as a "crazy coincidence". Aphrodite's powers probably had something to do with this.
- Lunacy: Certain creatures, like vampires and Fen wolves, are much stronger on full moon nights.
- Meaningful Name: The Fen wolves are both wolves of the forest (an archaic word for which is 'fen') and wolves of Fenrir, an army he will lead to greatness upon his prophecied return.
- Morphic Resonance: When the blue-scaled dragon Lenowyrm shapeshifts into a mouse, her fur remains blue.
- New Life in Another World Bonus: Parodied. The protagonist doesn't ask for anything magic (he just wants to be a lazy, well-fed housepet) but the goddess gives it to him anyway, because everyone before him asked for something cool and she doesn't want to be unfair. Given that his goal is to live a quiet life, being a giant monster is actually pretty inconvenient.
- Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Nahura is basically a zombie cat reanimated to serve as a witch's familiar.
- Old Retainer: Bal is a rare female example, always at Garo's side to support her and relay her orders to the pack.
- Pet Monstrosity: For various reasons, most humans don't notice that Routa is clearly not an ordinary dog. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't want to break the news to his young owner... and she probably wouldn't listen.
- Press-Ganged: After Redarmor is defeated, Garo forces him to become a Fen wolf (Fen bear?). Her charismatic talents ensure he stays loyal to the pack even after his wounds heal.
- Reincarnated as a Non-Humanoid: Routa requested this after he died from overwork, he wanted to be a lapdog with no responsibliities, but ended up as a powerful Fen Wolf.
- Samus Is a Girl: Not until she tells him does Routa realize that pack warleader Garo is a female, and the same goes for the skeletal horse (Night)mare. To be fair, the latter was made to be a warhorse, so she's significantly bigger than your average mare.
- Selective Obliviousness: The Fen wolves remain blissfully unaware that their "chosen one" is a spoiled puppy who only cares about mooching off their hard work...though, the story being idealistic in tone, their loyalty is rewarded anyway.
- Shout-Out: Ryouta Okami is not that Okami, although he does resemble her.
- Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Only Zenobia notices the obvious fact that Routa is a wolf, not a dog. Everyone else can't understand what she's talking about.
- Verbal Tic: Routa does not like barking, but he tries to replace his natural growls with barks so he sounds more doglike.
- What You Are in the Dark: The important thing about Routa's quest to obtain wyrmnil is that it's unnecessary. Mary will recover from the fever regardless- after a month of exhaustion and pain- and Routa knows this. He goes anyway.
