Hallo, ladies and gentlemen! My name is Mangs, and I welcome you back to X!

Mangs is a popular Fire Emblem and Advance Wars YouTuber specializing in shitposts and customized Fire Emblem runs. Most of his content ranges from Let's Plays and informative videos about characters and the history of Fire Emblem content, to silly and hilarious shitposts.

Mangs' work contains examples of:

  • Accent On The Wrong Syllable: In his older Advance Wars videos, he said infantry as “in-FAN-tree”. He dropped this later on.
  • Achievement In Ignorance: Mangs manages to get the worst possible tactician rank (something that's legitimately hard to do) while still beating the game in his Hector Hard Mode FE7 Ironman.
  • April Fools' Day: On 1st April 2020, he did a playthrough of Chapter 7 of Birthright on Phoenix Mode, soloing it with Hana, and utilising a soundboard that parodies the one used by Chaz on their Golden Deer playthrough.
  • Arc Number: Played for laughs, Mangs will often make note of when the number 69 appears, usually in relation to the hit chance a character has. In the case of a hit chance of 69%, Mangs will often throw caution to the wind and attack, even if it’s not the best idea.
  • Artifact Title: His channel url uses the name "Mangsandzerul"note .
  • Artificial Stupidity: In addition to I'M A GREEN UNIT!, a standout example is Xane in his Shadow Dragon Ironman, who talks to Marth and recruits himself while it's still the Enemy Phase... letting a nearby Levin Sword Hero attack and one-round kill him. He would have been safe if he'd stayed an enemy for one more turn.
  • Audience Participation: Mangs has played various PME'snote .
  • Be Careful What You Say: Whenever a low-percentage critical hit is pointed out.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Peri. Anything and everything about Peri.
    • Mangs can get very upset over Green Unit stupidity.
    • He hates Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, and would prefer to pretend that it never existed.
    • Mangs hates Maniac Mode of Path of Radiance so much that mentioning it is usually enough to sour his mood, and greatly tarnished the whole game in general when he ranked his favorite Fire Emblem games.
    • He hates ambush spawns regardless if a game or romhack gives him a warning that they will come or not.
  • Born Lucky:
    • If he needs a critical hit, he will get one.
    • Regularly gets great summons in Fire Emblem Heroes.
    • Mekkah coined the phrase “Never punished”, in reference to how Mangs often makes strategic mistakes that should cost him a unit, only to end up escaping that scenario unscathed by sheer luck.
  • Catchphrase: "Schmeck" (Used whenever he kills a unit).
  • Didn't Think This Through: Mangs' Fire Emblem errors can be roughly broken down to 1) knowing something is risky and trying it anyways or 2) making a conscious effort to think things through, but forgetting something crucial.
  • Epic Fail: While Mangs manages to fail on a somewhat regular basis, there are a few moments that really stand out:
    • Promoting Barth into a Stone Wall early on during his FE 6 Iron Man run in order to create an impassable chokepoint. Mangs laughs maniacally and ham-tastically declares "18 Defense, good fucking luck getting past this one, boys"... only for Barth to die the very same chapter to a random Mook with an Armorslayer.
    • Sending Garret against a boss in his first FE 6 Iron man run with a Devil Axe, who promptly crits and ends his own existence with a mighty blow. He apparently doesn't learn from his mistakes and did the same thing with Gonzalez on a lone, helpless Priest, suiciding another axe user in a single swing even more pointlessly.
    • In his Radiant Dawn Ironman, he managed to make it all the way to Part 4 in a pretty strong position to finish the game, and then when he had Chapter 4-2 pretty much beaten he left Elincia right in front of a Crossbow user at the end of the map, where she then promptly got one-shotted on Enemy Phase and caused a Game Over, ending a great run in such a sudden and deflating manner.
    • Accidentally selling the Member Card in FE7 via Button Mashing in the sell menu is one thing, but he did it again with the Silver Card in FE6 Season 2.
  • Fatal Flaw: Mangs admits he is a shameless gambler when explaining why he knowingly takes lots of big risks. For what it's worth, these decisions tend to produce his most memorable content, for one reason or another.
  • Flanderization: His obsession with blondes and supposed foolhardiness as a strategist have been acknowledged and played up by fans and Mangs himself to the point of becoming recurring jokes on his channel.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Given how Mangs' Ironman runs typically go, one could argue that eventually triggering a Game Over is basically inevitable. For specific instances:
    • Most fans agree that losing Marcus early on in the Fire Emblem: Binding Blade Ironman created a series of Disaster Dominoes that kept killing all of his units by putting him in desperate situations.
    • The Fire Emblem The Blazing Blade Ironman run made it to one of the hardest maps in the game with heavy losses, and Mangs almost had Zephiel's room secured... then Eliwood missed a 95% hit (actual hit rate 99.6%), basically dooming Zephiel.
  • Freak Out: Expect this when something has gone wrong.
    • Chapter 16 of Fire Emblem: Awakening is probably one of his biggest ones, with no less than 2 Rage Quits.
    • "Sanity Breaks" aka Chapter 26 of Path of Radiance Maniac Mode practically crushed his patience with the game, leading to a substantial hiatus before resuming the playthrough.
  • Godzilla Threshold: You know Mangs is well and truly desperate during an Ironman run when he resorts to using the units he hates the most, particularly Lyn. In Season 42 of FE7 he managed to get through Battle Before Dawn with only 7 total casualties the entire time... then everything fell apart so badly he lost nearly everyone, and was forced to give Lyn real experience. To rub salt in the wound, not only does he succeed at beating the Ironman run for the first time, but he had to be carried. By Lyn. An RNG-blessed Lyn.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: What a lot of his and Mekkah's conversations can end up being.
  • Hidden Depths: He is an experienced chess player.
  • History Repeats: When it comes to his worst excesses, Mangs never seems to learn.
    • He got Marcus killed in the first FE7 Ironman getting greedy in the Port of Badon arena, then did the exact same thing on his next attempt, even down to the same location. He also promotes Oswin and immediately gets him murdered using a Devil Axe trying to grind up his axe weapon rating on both runs.
    • He also gets an axe user killed (usually pointlessly) on each of the FE6 Ironman runs with a Devil Axe.
    • Not only did he accidentally sell the Silver Card on his first FE7 Ironman by selling too many items, he makes the same mistake on season 2 of FE6 Ironman.
  • Hope Spot:
    • His first FE6 Ironman playthrough was one missed hit away from killing the final boss and beating the game, despite the numerous setbacks he faced along the way.
    • In the FE7 Ironman, he managed to make it one of the most notorious chapters in the game (Battle Before Dawn) with heavy losses. Despite this, he closed in on Zephiel's room with his remaining powerhouses and nearly secured it... except Eliwood missed a 95% hit on a Hero about to reach Zephiel, dooming the run. note
    • In his Awakening Ironman, he made it to the last act of the game with a small but very powerful army, but when he attempted to recruit Spotpass Lyn he immediately lost every remaining unit against her team besides Robin and Chrom after really underestimating how strong her team was, and his run looked doomed as he only had those two units left against Lyn's whole terrifying team. However he persevered, and after pumping Robin with the rest of his stat boosters and utilizing hit-and-run tactics abusing her massive movement advantage from being a Dark Flier with Boots, he managed to barely survive the Lyn encounter in a long drawn out battle. It was then realized his Robin was so overpowered that she could solo the last act of the game with a Chrom Pair Up, while he also now had the powerful Spotpass Lyn that could handle plenty of enemies herself, making the run still very beatable. Then in the next story chapter on the first turn he accidentally left his Robin in the range of an Assassin with a Silver Bow, where as a flying unit she then immediately got annihilated on Enemy Phase and ended the run.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Making fun of others for repeating the same unfunny jokes.
  • Insult of Endearment: He is popularly called "Eggman" or "Egg" by his fans, poking fun at his bald head.
  • Irony:
    • Mangs is colorblind, and hates Green Units.
    • Mangs dislikes Magikarp Power. In his Pokemon Red Nuzlocke, he once had most of his team wiped out, leaving him with only a Magikarp, forcing him to invoke this trope.
    • In his LP of Three Houses, on part 13 of the Blue Lions path, he states that he doesn’t actually believe in luck, in spite of the “Mangs Luck” meme.
    • He also hates ambush spawns with a passion (whether they're forewarned or not), yet Binding Blade is his absolute favorite installment in the franchise, which is infamous for screwing players over with them.
  • It Was His Sled: invoked Averted in the 9th installment of his Ocarina of Time live streams. Mangs was actually unaware that Sheik is Zelda, and as such, The Reveal was a genuine surprise for him.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Both he and Mekkah both initially dismissed Three Houses as a game they expected nothing from. Dozens and dozens of LP's of the game's 4 routes later, those remarks have hilariously aged like milk, and Mangs brings attention to it in a Radiant Dawn highlights reel.
  • Large Ham: Mangs is extremely loud and energetic when playing, especially when things go horribly wrong.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: A part of his Mangs persona and humor is his outspoken and deep appreciation for attractive women, especially blondes like Clarine. Then the July 2020 fiasco happened, but the details of this are best not discussed.
  • Official Couple: Joked with, seeing as Mangs' waifu is Louise.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Gets surprisingly serious in his Sanity break during the Fire Emblem Path Of Radiance playthrough.
    • Also invoked when his playthrough of Fort Mangs Emblem has the game reference TotalBiscuit.
  • Pet-Peeve Trope: Mangs doesn't like the trope Magikarp Power, especially in regards to Fire Emblem characters, where this is referred to as the Est archetype.
  • Please Subscribe to Our Channel: His videos usually end with the phrase "Like, comment, and subscribe. It really helps out the channel a lot!".
  • Pretentious Pronunciation: Ingrid: He refuses to pronounce her name as the correct "ING-grid", rather he pronounces it as "ING-gree", usually justifying it as being because of how the name is pronounced in his home country.
  • Previously on…:
    • His later Path of Radiance Maniac Mode episodes start with such a segment.
    • Parodied with his Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon let's play. Instead of really showing what has happened in the last video, Mangs treats us with memes. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Mangs is the Red (impulsive in gameplay, jovial in commentary) to Mekkah's Blue (cautious in gameplay, snarky in commentary).
  • Running Gag: There are too many to count, so just a few will be listed here.
    • "I'm a green unit!"
    • Mangs Math Explanation
    • The Bard Train.
    • His chair breaking on stream.
    • Constant name and cover changes of his Facebook group.
    • Egg jokes in reference to his (self-inflicted) baldness.
    • "Did you mean: Manga", Google's "helpful" suggestion when looking up Mangs.
    • LA LA LA LA LA LA LA Explanation
    • Fellow Fire Emblem YouTuber and occasional co-commentator Mekkah's being imprisoned and forced to make videos with Mangs against his will.note
    • His urging co-commentators to ask the viewers to subscribe. ("What should they do?")
    • "FIVE POINTS!" Explanation
    • "IS IT THE DAWN BRIGADE?"
    • "Good Job Micaiah"
    • NEVER PUNISHED Explanation
    • Chat spamming "RIP Lilina" every time he goes to the bathroom during a Fire Emblem stream Explanation
    • LAAAAAAAAAAAAATE Explanation
    • "I am Vyland of the Coyote's Men"
  • Say My Name: "MMMBAAAAAAAANGS!"
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Plays the Wise Guy to his co-commentators' Straight Man, most notoriously Mekkah.
  • Tempting Fate: As made evident by the Ironman death compilations, the surest way for Mangs to kill his units off is for him to say "He's/she's not gonna die...". Notably, during the 2nd Fire Emblem 6 Ironman, he was so confident in his (admittedly blessed) Lilina's ability to enemy phase a horde of Wyverns, he left to use the toilet, only to return to a very dead star unit.
  • The Twelve Spoofs of Christmas: He produced one themed around Advance Wars.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Despite numerous failed Ironman runs in a row, he finally conquered a run of Shadow Dragon. Then, to ease any doubts, he followed up by successfully finishing a second attempt at Binding Blade- even killing King Zephiel with Wolt, one of the worst units in the game.
  • Total Party Kill: The first Fire Emblem 6 Ironman playthrough (all deaths final) ends with every single recruited character dying (with one exception) before the lord does, resulting in a Game Over.
  • Trademark Favorite Drink: Pepsi Max. He drinks it in almost every episode of any given Let’s Play. The fan-made Ft. Mangs Emblem ROM hack even made it one of the healing items.
  • Unperson: He refuses to acknowledge Est's existence to the point of killing her (in Shadow Dragon) and not recruiting her (in Echoes).
  • Unreliable Narrator: invoked In his abridged let's play of Fire Emblem Gaiden he often praises Clair (due to being his waifu in Echoes). But when Ghast takes over for one episode, he's quick to point out how bad of a unit she was in the original, and she quickly gets killed.
  • Verbal Tic:
    • His accent makes him pronounce the "t" sound at the end of words as "tch". ("I'm a green unitch!")
    • "Really? I was not aware of this!"
    • "She's gorgeous!"
    • "literally"
    • "If I'm gonna be completely honest."
  • Video Game Cruelty Punishment: In his first live stream of Ocarina of Time, his co-host Ryn tricks him into falling into this. She specifically tells him that Cuccos make a really funny sound when hit enough times. Mangs goes and attacks one, and he’s then promptly killed by the notorious Cucco Revenge Squad.

I'M A GREEN UNIT

In this shitpost featured by Mangs, during gameplay of Staff of Ages, a Fire Emblem romhack, Nikolas' AI goes haywire and attempts to attack an enemy unit, only to get himself killed.

How well does it match the trope?
