Heartwarming / Call of the Night

Vampires and humans are more alike than they would like to admit, and as such are just as capable of bonding with and understanding each other.

In General

  • Anytime Nazuna swoops in to protect Yamori from the other vampires. Really seeing them interact with each other due to their shared like-mindedness is sweet.

Anime

Episode 2
  • Yamori takes a while to find Nazuna during one night because she was looking for random people to feed upon. When she asks to suck his blood later than night, he refuses under the basis that since he still doesn't love her he won't turn into a vampire, making sucking his blood pointless. When he tells her to just go and suck someone else's blood if she's that hungry, however, it becomes obvious that he's sore about her feeding on other people after all the times she compared it to copulating. Nazuna then confesses that she was actually looking for him but was too embarrassed to admit it, and apologizes for teasing him. Yamori responds by uncovering his neck and allowing her to suck his blood.
    • Yamori later admits to himself that he felt relieved upon hearing this, before gently falling asleep next to Nazuna.
Yamori: I realized I felt relieved. Not because my blood is tasty, but because we both felt the same way. The reason didn't matter too much. I just wanted to see her.
  • Yamori is able to deduce that Nazuna has never been intimate with a human before. In order to help the two grow closer he starts addressing Nazuna as "Nazuna-chan" and asks if they can start by being friends. Even though Nazuna is embarrassed at the prospect, she does not refuse.

Episode 3

  • Nazuna returns Yamori's gesture by addressing him as "Kou-kun" instead of "boy" from this point onwards.
  • Akira expresses regret that she grew apart from Yamori after years of being in different classes, admitting that she wanted to talk to him again. Though she (mistakenly) believed Yamori gave her the transceiver because he felt the same way, he never once called her; in spite of this she kept the transceiver, hoping that one day he would call her. When Yamori began skipping school, Akira became concerned that something was wrong with him and tried using the transceiver to call him. Before Yamori can explain the misunderstanding, Akira states that he used to be far gloomier back in school, and says that she's glad that he seems to be doing fine after all.
    • She also thanks Yamori for the transceiver, thinking that he gave it to her as a way of expressing himself. While she only received it by mistake, Akira was genuinely happy that Yamori seemed to think of her as a friend.
  • A short flashback shows how they first became friends: they met in a playground, where Yamori contented himself with watching ants. Akira invited him to play with everyone else, but Yamori simply replied that he was already having fun and that she didn't have to worry about him. Instead of leaving or feeling offended, Akira sat next to Yamori and watched the ants with him while smiling.
    Akira: We're friends, aren't we?
Yamori: Huh? Uh, I don't... Well, I guess?
    Akira: Oh, good!
  • Though she finds it odd that Yamori is heading home at 4 a.m., Akira asks if they can meet again the next day at the same time. In spite of the strange circumstances that led to them meeting again, Akira is happy to have Yamori back in her life.
  • In an attempt to better understand Yamori, Akira asks why he stopped going to school. When he admits that he didn't enjoy it anymore, Akira trusts him enough to open up about her own issues and explains that she feels the same way every day, and that sometimes she doesn't even know if her friends are really her friends, but that this changed after she ran into Yamori after not seeing him in a while. She then asks him to go to school with her since it's only fun when he's around.
  • When Nazuna storms off after seemingly getting angry at Yamori, he chases after her for a good while so that he can apologize, or at the very least find out exactly why she's angry. He tells her just as much through the transceiver, which causes her to physically meet with Yamori to tease him over the fact that he deems their relationship one that warrants making up and clarify that she's ticked off that he didn't answer Akira's request right away, since Yamori going back to school would mean the two would not be able to meet as often anymore. Yamori reassures her that the reason he didn't answer was because he couldn't think of a way to tell a "human friend" that he was Skipping School because he wanted to become a vampire. Noticing there was blood in his mouth, Nazuna proceeds to kiss Yamori, seemingly satisfied with his answer.
Nazuna: You said "human friend". Does that mean you have a vampire friend now, too? I won't take any more blood from you today. See you tomorrow, friend.

Episode 4

  • The three drunk men from the first episode stare at a kissing couple from a distance and describe the sight as "nice". They then decide to chat about it over more drinks.
  • Really, just the fact that Akira wants to be supportive of Yamori, even if he wants to go out with Nazuna.
    • Or the fact that she describes his night activities as "wholesome" while feeling relieved that he's not up to anything sketchy.
  • Yamori admits that he invited Akira over to Nazuna's place in order to ease her worries about his night activities.
  • Akira does not criticize Yamori's goal of becoming a vampire. If anything, she's happy that he's found something he wants to do with his life. She also states that, since he's already friends with Nazuna, a vampire, there's no reason Yamori can't stay friends with Akira after he turns into one.
Akira: I mean, even if you become a vampire, we can still be friends, right? There's already precedence between you and Nanakusa-san, Kou. You be what you want to be. It's great that you've found a dream.
  • Akira ends up so satisfied with how she spent the night that she manages to beat her insomnia and fall asleep next to Yamori.
    • She then wakes up Late for School, but still takes the time to say goodbye to Yamori, who wishes her a good day and goes back to sleep.

Episode 5

  • Nazuna wakes up a bit earlier than usual and spends the next few hours looking for ways to pass the time while waiting to meet with Yamori, anxiously counting the hours left for him to wake up.
    • At one point she takes a moment to play with a stray cat.
  • Yamori explains in an inner monologue that one of the benefits from having Nazuna suck his blood is that it allows him to examine his own feelings; having never been in love before, he's scared that he may end up feeling something different. Case in point, upon seeing Nazuna fresh out of the bath, Yamori wasn't sure if he was feeling romantic or sexual attraction, and felt that feeling the latter towards a friend was immoral. Nazuna catches on to this, being able to get an idea of what he feels every time she sucks his blood, and reassures Yamori that letting his emotions run wild is what the night is all about. She then encourages him to embrace all of his emotions, both positive and negative, since they make his blood tastier. Her words manage to put Yamori at ease, as he takes her advice to heart.

Episode 6

  • Yamori and Shirakawa share with each other how they both enjoy being out at night, while Shirakawa smiles over having someone who can relate to her.
Shirakawa: I went out at night for the first time and bought a pork bun and tea at a convenience store. It felt like it was a private place, just for me. I had forgotten about that.
  • While it was abrupt, Yamori offers to transform Shirakawa into a vampire so she would no longer be weighed down by her job.
  • In a surprising subversion of how the trope generally plays out, the two men hitting on Nazuna fully support Yamori's relationship with her.

Episode 7

  • Yamori runs into Shirakawa, who reveals that his previous offer has given her the strength to continue working.
Shirakawa: You said you'd turn me into a vampire if I need it. Just knowing that really took a load off my shoulders. Thanks, Yamori-kun.
    • Yamori thinks to himself that it feels different to every other time he was thanked before, since in this particular instance he had a personal interest in helping Shirakawa.
  • When the vampire council takes issue with Nazuna not turning Yamori into a vampire, he makes it abundantly clear that it's her he wants, that he has every intention of falling in love with her and that he doesn't care how long that takes. Despite their issues with the relationship, the vampire council sees that they intend to go all the way and agrees to leave them be for the moment.

Episode 8

  • As Yamori realizes how screwed he will be if he can't turn into a vampire within a year, Akira calms him down and offers to give him advice.
  • Mahiru expresses hope that he, Yamori, and Akira can hang out together like they used to when they were kids. He also shows concern for Yamori since he started Skipping School and asks Akira to give him his regards.
  • Seri finds Yamori's plight so adorable that she tries to offer him advice for a date plan. Sure, the date quickly goes to hell, but still, it's the thought that counts, right?
  • Though Nazuna found the entire date lame, she seems to realize that Yamori actually tried to put some effort into it and picks him up at his own apartment to take him for another flight in order to do the last bit properly. Said last bit? A meal overlooking the night lights.
  • Mahiru is able to notice Yamori across the street; he immediately ditches his other friends and goes to talk to him, greeting him with a casual "Long time no see!".
    • Yamori expresses surprise that Mahiru was able to recognize him, not having met for ages. Mahiru tells him there's no way he wouldn't.
    • Yamori spends a minute listing all the good things about Mahiru, before expressing how happy he is that he considers him a friend.
  • Nazuna sees Mahiru holding hands with another woman, prompting her to do the same with Yamori.
    • For added context, this happens after they accidentally got separated during a festival in the manga. Nazuna ran into the vampire council, who advised her to hold Yamori's hand so that neither of them would get lost in such a huge crowd. She ends up taking it to heart.

Episode 9

  • Yamori is able to notice Seri is feeling upset about something even though she tries to pretend nothing is wrong. He even points out how her lie about things not being fun of late, back when they first met, didn't sound like a lie. In spite of their history, Yamori decides that he still wants to try to help her.
Yamori: If I'm wrong, that's fine. But I figure even vampires can have problems, you know?
  • When Yamori sings a song from thirty years ago, Seri becomes interested enough to want to hear more songs from the same band.
  • Yamori shows that he has a strong moral compass when he saves Akiyama from getting killed by Seri.
  • Later, when he realizes that Akiyama likes Seri, Yamori encourages him to share his feelings and his struggles so that he can help him.
  • Despite initially treating Akiyama coldly, Seri truly does value him as a friend and did not answer his messages because having a relationship with a human that did not result in offspring was looked down upon. She heartbreakingly tries to ask Akiyama to forget about her, but he instead volunteers to become her offspring having grown to love her.

Episode 10

Episode 11

Episode 12

  • Yamori is still reeling from his encounter with the missing teacher. But when Nazuna accidentally triggers his PTSD and causes him to push her away, rather than get upset or confused Nazuna's first reaction is to calmly ask Yamori to tell her what happened to rattle him so much. Feeding can wait: Yamori comes first.
    • When Yamori shows concern that Nazuna might end up the same one day and violently attack him in a hunger-driven frenzy, Nazuna grabs his face and reassures him that she would never do that to him.
Yamori: You were hungry today, weren't you? You said you couldn't wait...
Nazuna: Yo, idiot! Look at me! Don't bundle me together with that geezer. That's not something you need to worry about, Kou-kun.
    • As he explains what happened, Yamori becomes worried that Nazuna could also be killed, and tells her that he doesn't want to become the reason that happens.
    • Having talked things out, Yamori apologizes for pushing Nazuna and asks her to suck his blood.
  • Yamori hugs Nazuna after Mahiru throws him an Armor-Piercing Question, asking her to just let him stay like that for a while. Though Nazuna hesitates for a moment, she understands that Yamori is feeling distressed and decides to allow it.

Episode 13

  • Even though it would be improbable that they'd grant a special exception to Yamori, Nazuna goes before the Vampire Council and tries to convince them to spare Yamori since he was showing some hesitation over whether to become offspring after being traumatized.
  • After Hatsuka argues that, as a guy, only he can properly understand Yamori's heart, Yamori realizes that his problem is not about gender specifically since he himself has never really understood anyone. He then declares that, although they may not be able to understand another, he still wants to try and fall in love with Nazuna (and he would still want to try even if he were a girl).
    • Yamori remembers what Nazuna told him about always being bored and, while he admits he's not prepared to die, he also doesn't want Nazuna to be bored.
  • Yamori runs to find Nazuna when Niko implies that she got hurt while pleading his case. He then becomes immensely relieved to find Nazuna is fine.
  • Niko reveals that she was being literal when she said she just wanted to "enjoy some love talk and leave it at that": once Nazuna admitted that she liked Yamori, Niko changed the condition for Yamori's survival from "turn him into a vampire" to "make him fall in love with you", declaring that the vampire council will support them from now on.
  • Having come under the impression that he has caused trouble for Nazuna, Yamori insists that, since they killed each other's boredom after they met, it should be fine if they continue their relationship, before declaring that he will fall in love with her.
Yamori: Then we're okay! Me too! I had fun, too! Everything was new to me. If you thought so too, then we just have to keep finding new things to do! You and me both, we're no good at being alone. Nazuna-chan, I'm going to fall in love with you! So, I won't let you ever get bored. Let's stay together!
    • When Nazuna becomes too flustered to answer him, Yamori apologizes for not phrasing things better before going on a tangent and expressing how relieved he is that she wasn't actually hurt. Before he can finish, Nazuna grabs him by the collar and kisses him.
Nazuna: Kou-kun... Kou-kun, I promise... I'll become a vampire worth falling for. So we're in this, together.

Manga

  • Chapter 48:
    • Mahiru opens up to Kiku and admits that, even though he's mad at Yamori for wanting to become a vampire, he can't bring himself to actually hate him. Kiku encourages him to go and patch things up with Yamori if that's the case.
    • Although she's still reeling from being attacked by a vampire the day before, Akira still doesn't particularly mind if Yamori becomes one. Her sole concern is that he won't become starved for blood and go berserk. In order to prevent that from happening, she offers to let Yamori suck her blood first.
    • Mahiru arrives shortly after and asks Yamori if they'll still be friends even if he turns into a vampire. When Yamori answers with a "yes", Mahiru offers to let him drink his blood if he ever gets thirsty. This prompts a laugh from Yamori, since Akira made the same offer moments ago.
