  • One of the scenes in the trailer shapes up to do the obligatory "rising star gets in a breakup spat with his old friend" and flips it on its head at the end:
Bernie: Don't you wanna just sing without this ridiculous paraphernalia?
Elton: People don't pay to see Reginald Dwight, they pay to see Elton John!
    Elton: Sorry.
    Bernie: I know.
  • Little Reggie leading his neighborhood in a rendition of "The Bitch Is Back."
    • Elton starting the song in therapy, trying to ignore his younger self, while the kid keeps butting into the song until Elton gets pissed and chases him out of the room.
    • Elton's therapy group following him into his childhood memory and walking down the street as if this was completely normal.
  • The Reveal of Reggie in his new Elvis-style pompadour, sitting at the piano studiously playing in Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet.
  • When Reg first brings up the idea of changing his name to his bandmates:
Reg Dwight: I've been thinking of changing my name.
    Elton Dean: Yeah, great.
Reg Dwight: I was thinking of changing it to Elton Dean.
Reg Dwight: Yeah, I know. What'd you think?
Elton Dean: (chuckling) I think, fuck off!
  • When discussing his marriage to Renate Blauel, he admits that he hated breaking her heart. The therapist asks him if he enjoyed being married to her at all, to which he replies with an utterly deadpan: "Not really; I'm gay." It got a chuckle from his therapy group as well.
  • After Elton comes out to Bernie, Bernie assures him that he doesn't mind... but notes that Elton's girlfriend may feel a bit differently. It gets even better in the next scene. Elton says in his narration that he told her the truth, and she took it well, all things considered. Cut to his girlfriend angrily throwing him and Bernie out, screaming her head off, and throwing Elton's keyboard off the balcony.
Elton: (meekly) She's killed my piano.
    • A deleted scene comes right after this, where Elton and Bernie argue over moving back in with Elton's mother, to which Elton refuses, saying, "You go in there if you like, but I'll be fucked if I am!" Cue the Gilligan Cut... and guess where they end up living?
  • After the success of Elton's performance at the Troubadour, Doug Weston invites everyone to a party at Mama Cass's. Ray comes in to announce, "I'm so drunk, and Doug's just lent me his car!"
  • When Bernie begins to walk out of the restaurant while singing "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road", Elton says, "Oh, I'm getting the bill, am I?". Made even funnier because Elton's the only one of the two who ordered and ate anything.
  • The "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue shows that, although Elton beat all his demons... He still has a "problem" with shopping, and sure enough, the picture is of him surrounded by shopping bags.
