Funny / Danganronpa: The Animation

  • Monokuma's dance in the opening sequence. It's been compared to the dancing girls in the opening credits of James Bond films.
  • Monokuma's introduction to the students in Episode 1.
Monokuma: I know what you're all thinking, and no, I am not a Build-a-Bear reject!
  • In a rare instance of Adaptation Expansion, the anime actually addresses Mondo knocking Makoto unconscious in an outburst of rage towards the end of the prologue, an incident that's oddly never brought up again in the game. In the anime, Makoto sits down next to Mondo in the cafeteria when everyone regroups, and they share an awkward silence for a moment before Mondo mumbles that they should chalk it up to the tension of the situation, to which Makoto quietly agrees — and then it's never brought up again, which still amounts to a pretty funny Major Injury Underreaction, given that he was beaten unconscious until the next morning.
  • In Episode 2, Monokuma reenacts some possible executions like electric chair, poison gas, or slashing his arms around to simulate a hurricane. Fun as it may be, you'd probably wish it happens FOR REAL to that little ***er...
  • During the first class trial, Celeste (Leon in the game) asks who Sakura is because she has forgotten what she looks like. When Sakura introduces herself, all sounds cut out at once for a couple of seconds so we can absorb her character design.
    • The game also adds up how Aoi said that she invited Sakura into her room... and then there's still someone in denial:
Kiyotaka: It IS a problem! A boy and a girl spending the night together!? It's... it's unwholesome!
      Sakura: But... I'm a girl.
Kiyotaka: Wh-!? You are!? Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!!
  • Mondo and Kiyotaka tell Makoto to forget about their "battle", because now they are bros. Then Kiyotaka says THIS:
  • The opening to Episode 4. Instead of the usual opening, there's a mock Bullet-Time Battle (a mechanic introduced in-game at the very end of the first trial) with a matsuri as "Monokuma Ondo" plays in the background.
  • Byakuya's facial expressions in The Animation are absolutely sidesplitting, particularly when Genocide Jill insults him and when he finds out Chihiro is a guy. Not to mention how on certain occasions when he's insulted, he repeats the insult (i.e. "ugly glasses") in an apparent state of disbelief.note
  • When Yasuhiro sees the Bloodbath Fever message.
    Yasuhiro: It's a shining message!
    Aoi: I don't think that's the right word…
  • The dub features Genocide Jill's very... interesting description of her preferred murder victims:
Genocide Jill: Yep, I only cut up the guys who get me goin' in the southern hemisphere if you catch my drift!
  • Genocide Jill explaining why she wishes she was the one who killed Chihiro during Episode 5.
Genocide Jill: (after Chihiro's crossdressing has been revealed) Damn, that's freaking hot! I wish I killed him.
  • In Episode 6, Yasuhiro can be seen giggling and poking the breasts of a Venus de Milo-esque sculpture.
  • Again from Episode 6, when Genocide Jill appears randomly out of the infirmary curtain during the investigation. It has to be seen to be believed.
  • Episode 9: the reaction shots to Byakuya apparently chugging down a bottle of poison. Shock, horror... and an utterly blank-faced Kyoko, then a dozing Monokuma waking up with a start.
  • Episode 10, when the students are disassembling Monokuma, Yasuhiro pulls out its bomb... which has a vibration sensor that can set it off. Byakuya takes the time to troll Yasuhiro until he says he has deactivated the sensor.
Byakuya: I would suspect it would be triggered by the slightest... vibration.
Yasuhiro: Huh!? Seriously!? V-vibration... (completely shaking) R-right! What could go wrong!?
Aoi: Calm down! You'll kill us all!
Byakuya: Oh dear, I'm sorry. Did I neglect to mention I've already deactivated the sensor?
    Everyone else: [breath of relief]
Yasuhiro: Ah... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... fuck you off, jackass!
  • Monokuma's tirade upon realizing someone stole his "treasure," beginning with him once again taking his anger out on a salmon, and culminating in him angrily telling them not to use him as a reference when they're "out there pounding the pavement." Between his uncharacteristically immature tantrum (in stark contrast to tone you'd expect him to use when taunting the students about being able to live normal lives again), the salmon eventually swinging back and hitting Monokuma in the face, his melodramatic lament that the students could do something like this to him after he's "treated them like honored guests," and the absurd concept of using him as a job reference, everything about this scene spells hilarity.
  • Monokuma has a mini-Villainous Breakdown in Episode 11 after Alter Ego's virus saves Makoto from being unfairly executed.
Monokuma: I've been hacked! Son of a mother—I've been hacked! Digi-Fujisaki planted a virus when it infiltrated the network! (angrily bangs his head against his desk and chalkboard) They've made a MOCKERY OF THIS FINE INSTITUTION!
  • Also in Episode 11, when Kyoko rescues Makoto by diving into the dumpster herself. It would have been a heartwarming moment until Makoto points out that Kyoko has cup noodles on her hair. Kyoko flicks it away like nothing and proceeds to help Makoto as if that didn't happen.
  • In Case 5 of Trigger Happy Havoc, when Makoto is about to see the video clip which would reveal the mastermind's identity, Monokuma remotely shuts off the video in order to keep the truth hidden until later on; when he's questioned by Makoto, he simply replies the device must have malfunctioned. In Episode 12, the scene plays out in largely the same way—except Monokuma happily waves the unplugged extension cord in the air while holding it in his left hand as he mockingly asks...
  • Later on, Makoto tries to wake Toko who is passed out on the floor of the bio lab, only for her to leap up and reveal that she's currently Jill with some cackles and flamboyant poses. When we cut back to Makoto, he's just standing there, and says "Genocider Syo, huh?" with the most bored, unaffected face. This is commonplace to him by now.
  • During the final class trial, Toko show the others her group picture, which was taken during the winter (and is notably the only one not replicated from the game). Leon's adapting his baseball talents to rapid-fire snowballs against Mondo, Kiyotaka, Hifumi and Yasuhiro all at once, Byakuya appears to be giving orders regarding Sakura and Aoi's giant snowman-in-progress, and a giant snowball nails Junko in the face.
  • Junko's over-the-top reveal in the final trial.
Junko: (in an exaggerated British accent, wearing a crown) At long last! I've been waiting an eternity for someone of your caliber to come!
