YMMV / Danganronpa: The Animation

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: During the English dub of the third trial, a minor Memetic Mutation ensued with Celeste asking Makoto "Are you deaf as you are thick?" (Emphasis hers.) Sure, she probably meant "thick" as in "thick-headed" (i.e. "stupid",) but given the more sexual meaning "thick" has taken on over the years combined with the manic grin Celeste gives while saying the line, many viewers couldn't help but imagine Celeste was commenting on Makoto's body.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The biggest criticism surrounding the anime is that it zooms by the game's story, cramming around 25 hours of visual novel into approximately 5 hours of animated content. A 4-hour chapter in the game is covered in around 40 minutes, with investigations being the most trimmed-down part. Only the final episode really has some room to breathe, being 10 minutes longer.
  • Questionable Casting: Everyone except for Makoto gets Darrin'ed with a different VA to the ones used in the English dubs of the games (this is also true in the other localised anime), which can be jarring anyway since the games themselves are very good at keeping voices consistent across the series and a lot of those performances are beloved by fans. However, Mondo being recast with Christopher Sabat proved particularly unpopular, with many finding his gruffer and older-sounding voice too much of a departure from the slicker, smoother tones Keith Silverstein gave the character in the original visual novel. In fairness to the actor the script doesn't help, with most of Mondo's more moderate jibes and off-hand comments from the visual novel replaced with cruder insults delivered at greater length, giving the impression that he's always yelling and violent, and thus removing some of the hints the game gives to him being a Jerk with a Heart of Gold with at least some Hidden Depths. Others just think Sabat's voice for Mondo sounds too much like Muscle Man.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Funimation's English dub of the anime is full of Ham and Cheese, bizarre lines, and occasional "Blind Idiot" Translations, to the point of making their infamous Danganronpa 3 dub look serious, but least it makes the rather mediocre Compressed Adaptation more enjoyable.
