Monte Carlo is a 2011 Romantic Comedy starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy and Selena Gomez. The film is a very loose adaptation of the book Headhunters by Jules Bass (yes, that Jules Bass).

Gomez plays Grace Bennett, a recent high school grad from a small town in Texas set to experience her life-long dream of spending a week in Paris. Accompanying her is her best friend and fellow waitress Emma (Cassidy). Grace reluctantly agrees to allow her step-sister Meg (Meester) to accompany them at her mother's insistence (and in exchange for a business class airline upgrade).

Once in Paris, the trio find themselves having a miserable time on a whirlwind tour that hardly allows them to see anything, made worse by constant bickering and deplorable hotel room conditions.

Things change for the girls, however, when they miss their tour bus and have to walk back to their hotel. Taking shelter from the rain in a five-star hotel, the manager mistakes Grace for one of his guests, namely the rebellious and abrasive English socialite Cordelia Winthrop Scott (also played by Gomez).

When Cordelia skips off to Spain without informing anyone of her plans, Grace takes on her identity, and convinces Emma and Meg to accompany her to Monte Carlo, where Grace will pose as Cordelia for a charity auction.

Complicating matters are the appearance of Cordelia's Aunt Alicia (Catherine Tate), and an unexpected romance with Théo (Pierre Boulanger), the son of the charity's director. Romance also ensues for Meg in the person of Riley (Luke Bracey), an Australian former rubgy player traveling the world to celebrate his new lease on life after recovering from an accident.

Originally intended as a vehicle for Nicole Kidman (who still served as one of the film's producers) and Julia Roberts: this explains how it went from toplining Nicole Kidman to toplining Selena Gomez.

(For the 1930 musical film, see Monte Carlo (1930).)

Monte Carlo provides examples of:

  • Balcony Escape: Towards the end, Grace and her friends try to escape from the hotel room when Cordelia returns by crawling along the hotel exterior from the balcony until they find another window they can enter by.
  • Bound and Gagged: Cordelia, with an Apple?
  • Fake Brit: Selena Gomez as Cordelia and, in an in-universe example, Grace when she's posing as Cordelia.
  • Funny Background Event: Just after Cordelia confronts Grace during the press conference, Riley takes a sip of the champagne
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Meg in particular, as she learns to stop trying to be so in control.
  • Humble Goal: All Emma really wants is a house with dimmer switch lights.
  • Gay Paree: Subverted. The girls have a miserable time in Paris due to Grace's (by her own admission) poor planning.
  • I Am Very British: Grace, when posing as Cordelia.
  • Identical Stranger: Grace for Cordelia.
  • Karma Houdini: Grace faces no legal consequences for committing identity theft, simply because everyone likes her better than Cordelia.
  • Loophole Abuse: The best description of how Grace gets off with no charges despite Cordelia's accusations and her essentially committing identity fraud. As the inspector points out, Cordelia can't accuse Grace and her friends of kidnapping Cordelia or stealing the necklace when Cordelia is right here and the necklace is on public display, there's no distinct evidence of identity fraud as Cordelia can't prove she's been elsewhere, and it's not a matter for the police if Cordelia is miserable about the situation.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Emma is put off her initial attraction to Prince Domenico because of his attitude towards the waitresses in a restaurant they visit.
  • Noodle Incident: The charity auction was set up as public image-saving throw for Cordelia after an incident in Rekjavik. What exactly happened is only described as "what didn't [she] do!"
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping:
    • Katie Cassidy slips back and forth between her natural voice and a Texas accent.
    • An in universe example: Grace's imitation of Cordelia's accent isn't exactly perfect, but she still manages to get a bit complacent and forgets to use it. This doesn't go unnoticed, and she makes up for it by going overboard with a stereotypical British accent.
  • Preppy Name: Cordelia Winthrop-Scott.
  • Rich Bitch: Cordelia Winthropp Scott; her aunt assumes that Grace is just an impersonator Cordelia hired to avoid her responsibilities, when in actual fact Cordelia just couldn't be bothered turning up and Grace's appearance is pure coincidence.
  • Spot the Impostor: Cordelia's Aunt Alicia soon realises that Grace isn't Cordelia because the two ride a horse in a different manner.
