Above the Shadows is a 2019 supernatural romance drama.

A young woman who has faded to the point of becoming invisible must find her way back with the help of the one man who can see her. Released on July 19, 2019.


Above The Shadows contains examples of:

  • An Astral Projection, Not a Ghost: Holly is not dead but, somehow, is invisible to everyone around except Shayne.
  • Abusive Parents: Shayne was kicked out of his home at the age of 13 by his mother's boyfriend and his mother didn't stop him.
  • Am I Just a Toy to You?: Holly questions her bond with Shayne after he is spotted on a "date" with Juliana.
  • Basement-Dweller: Holly's brother Troy still lives at home, making documentaries.
  • Betty and Veronica: Holly is The Betty to Juliana's Veronica over Shayne's Archie.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Holly and Shayne share a kiss atop a rooftop. They share another at the end after she becomes visible again.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Holly reunites with her dad after regaining her visibility again.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Holly warns Shayne that Juliana is this.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Shayne loses the match against Atilla but reconciles with Holly, and Holly is able to become visible again thanks to Shayne and reunite with her family.
  • Bouncer: Shayne works as a bouncer.
  • Cassandra Truth: Shayne doesn't believe Holly is invisible until she throws herself in front of a moving car...and the car passes right through her.
  • Canine Companion: Shayne's three-legged dog Maude.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Kaleidoscopes. Holly's late mother's necklace. Her father's kaleidoscopes paintings. These help Holly see the real picture (literally) why she faded away.
    • Holly's invisibility. She uses it to help save Shayne during a brutal cage match.
  • Deus ex Machina: Holly becomes one for Shayne during his brutal fight as she uses her invisibility to help him in the ring.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Holly's not evil. But Shayne's dog Maude is supposed to growl at intruders. However, she cannot pick up on Holly's supernatural presence since she is invisible even to dogs.
  • Exact Words: When Shayne tells Holly to come talk to him in the morning, she arrives at his apartment at 6:00 AM. As she points out, it's morning.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Holly becomes jealous when Shayne starts becoming interested in his ex Juliana.
  • Forced from Their Home: Shayne reveals to Holly that his mother's boyfriend kicked him out when he was 13 and he lived homeless as a teen ever since.
  • Heel Realization: After a fight with Shayne, Holly realizes that her family ignoring her isn't the problem, it's herself.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Shayne who owns a rescued three-legged dog for a companion. Holly also bonds with the pup.
  • It's Personal: Why Shayne tracks down Holly. She is the reporter responsible for ending his fighting career due to evidence of his infidelity.
  • Invisible to Normals: Holly's whole existence. Nobody can see Holly except Shayne. When he tries to point out her existence, they think he's talking to himself.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After losing the match, Shayne and Juliana part ways on good terms with her encouraging him to go after Holly.
  • Jailbait Taboo: Holly blackmails Shayne's next rival Tommy with the knowledge that his fling is 16.
  • Love Triangle: Shayne/Holly/Juliana.
  • Missing Mom: Holly says her invisibility started when her mom died from cancer.
  • Missing Reflection: Holly isn't visible in any pictures taken or mirror reflections.
  • Morality Pet: Holly and Shayne become this to each other.
  • Pair the Spares: Shayne's ex Juliana ends up flirting with his rival Atilla at the end.
  • Parental Neglect: Holly's siblings and father ignore her at the dinner table.
  • Power of Love: Played with. Holly realizes that it wasn't just love that was missing, it was her willingness to support someone and be there for them, not because they could bring her back but because she cared for them.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Holly walks back to the locker room in the nude after a shower as another person is walking down the same hallway. Justified, since she is invisible and nobody can see her.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Holly discovers her sister Vanessa is pregnant and her sister Vanessa isn't happy about it.
  • Their First Time: Holly has never had sex, which given that she's invisible to most people isn't too surprising, as she confesses when getting intimate with Shayne. In fact, she isn't even sure what to do (this seems less believable). Regardless, she loses her virginity to him offscreen.
  • Topless From The Back: Holly's shown from the back as she walks back to the locker room nude.
  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Shayne wants his ex Juliana back but she "doesn't date losers". Only when his career restarts and he kisses Holly does Juliana take an interest in him again, causing problems between him, Holly and Juliana.
  • Weight Woe: Holly's sister Vanessa suffers from an eating disorder, beginning form childhood. She says she doesn't want to "intake carbs or else she'll bloat".
  • You Can See Me?: Holly says this when she is discovered by Shayne. As he is the only one who can see her.
  • You Didn't Ask: Holly asks if Shayne still fights professionally. He says yes. Holly is surprised since he didn't tell her that he still fights. Shayne tells her because she didn't ask.
