Fanfic / The Gun Hero's Arrival

Go To

Misato dies only to wake up in a world that looks like the show he watched. He appears, not wielding the Sword, Bow, Spear or even the Shield. For he wields a different weapon, a weapon that once belonged to a Legendary Hero from another world, a world destroyed by the Waves. For He is... The Gun Hero. Witness his journey as he tries to change the Future.

The Gun Hero's Arrival is a The Rising of the Shield Hero fanfic by Ghost of Halo about Misato Morgan who died and summoned by Fitoria as The Gun Hero, a secret fifth Cardinal Hero whose existence is kept secret by the Filolial Queen to keep them out of the world's politics. And for good measure, Misato has watched 2 seasons worth of the anime and knows additional trivia from his friends who is a fan of the light novel.

The Gun Hero's Arrival provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Misato manages to convince the other Cardinal Heroes that their weapons can have more than one Strengthening method, not only allowing them to gain Ten Strengthening methods way earlier than canon but also unlock Hybrid Series, where their weapons become a blend of it and one other weapon.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Misato is surprised that he finds Keel among the slaves he rescues from Idol Rabier.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • In the original work, Queen Mirellia didn't seem to give Naofumi any help, either from the false accusation or after, especially considering she has plenty of personal Shadows. Here, there was a war between The Queen's Shadows and The Three Heroes Church's, and by the time they won it, Naofumi's "trial" was already over. While they did try to subtly aid him, such as having the Shadows pretending to be civilians and "accidentally" drop a coin near him, he was shown to be too paranoid & jaded to accept more direct support.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In Canon, Fitoria is relatively indifferent to the circumstances of the Cardinal Heroes' hostility with one another, only caring that they have to work together and would kill them all to start over if they cannot. Here, as she trains and takes care of Misato from his trauma, and Misato helps her understand people and regain the recordings from her old master, she learns how to empathize again.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • Misato gently chides Fitoria when she tries to scold Naofumi for his unwillingness to work together with the other Heroes. When she asks why he does that, he explains that while she's not wrong, her delivery is too apathetic, like she didn't consider Naofumi's circumstances.
"Fitoria…When you were crying about the recordings being damaged. If I said something harsh to you like "Stop crying! There is no point in this!" Instead of comforting you, would you have reacted well?"
  • Armor-Piercing Response:
    • Itsuki asks Misato why cant they report Malty's wrongdoings to Aultcray. Misato points out that as Malty's father, he would be too biased to believe it.
Misato: Itsuki, if people said your parents were bad or evil, what would you think?
Itsuki: That they are lying. *Beat* Oh...
    • After being saved by Motoyasu & Misato from the slave traders, yet the former did not believe that Malty's the one who sold her, Rino was frustrated that Motoyasu was not like the Spear Hero of Legend. Misato responded by telling her that before being summoned, he and the other heroes were not gods, but just normal civilians who came to Melomnarc as they died.
Misato: If you were somehow the Staff Hero and if the waves were to happen in a town what would you do?
Rino: I would try to protect the people and fight the monsters as best I can.
Misato: Once the Waves stopped, people would have died and the survivors would blame you for not protecting them.
Rino: That's unfair! How could they expect me to be perfect? I've just learned how to use magic effectively.
      *Beat*
      Rino: Oh...
      Misato: Yeah...
  • Broken Pedestal: Misato tries to enforce this to other people, that the wielders of the Legendary Weapon are not perfect gods, but normal humans with flaws, believing that people of RoTSH world putting the three heroes upon said pedestals are part of the blame for their delusions.
  • Brutal Honesty: As one last attempt to break Motoyasu from "Its just a game" delusion, Naofumi dares him to say that Rino, his sole True Companions within his all-female party, is just a character with a script.
Naofumi: Say that this world is just a game. Say that the people here who suffered from your actions were scripted by someone who wrote it on some paper for this to happen. Say that Rino is some bits of data made on a computer. Say that her existence is not real! Say that she is simply a character with no real soul!
  • Category Traitor: Itsuki's party has plans to and ends up betraying him after he shows sympathies to the Demi-Humans
  • Caught on Tape: Crystal Balls are often used to catch Malty red-handed.
  • Commonality Connection: Misato reaches out to the at-the-time distraught Itsuki by revealing himself as The Gun Hero and, like him, arrives to RoTSH world by dying, and how it feels.
Misato: *Sighs* My name is Misato Morgan, and I died once…*Deep Breath* I was shot… I bled out, I felt cold, I felt tired, but I knew it wasn't fatigue, I felt death…I-I f-felt d-death slowly *Deep Breath* t-take My…
    Itsuki: Soul...
  • Crazy-Prepared: Forrest has prepared various materials and a tablet-like device that contains videos for Fitoria and to aid the next Gun Hero.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Fitoria becomes the Well-Intentioned Extremist she is now because of previous Heroes constantly either dismissed her or tried to capture or kill her for centuries.
  • Death by Irony: Misato, the Gun Hero, died from blood loss from a gunshot from a burglary gone wrong.
  • Death by Origin Story: Like Itsuki, Ren & Motoyasu, Misato was summoned into RoTSH world as he was dying.
  • Disguised in Drag: To escape adventurers who are about to ambush him for his reward money, Misato dresses up as a girl, to Fitoria's amusement.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Misato and his party force Motoyasu to come with them to eavesdrop on Malty just as Motoyasu's newest party member asks her why Motoyasu isn't as impressive as the legends say, and she assures the new member that she'll have the life of luxury if she plays along with her cheering from the side while Motoyasu does the hard adventuring work, basically treating Motoyasu as nothing more than a Meal Ticket, and pretend to enjoy Motoyasu's cooking while secretly spits out.
  • Fantastic Firearms: The Legendary Gun can use Misato's mana as an ammo in a pinch, but it won't hurt those with magic resistance or immunity.
  • Freudian Excuse: During middle school, Motoyasu kept his head down when his middle school friend Mellisa was accused of bullying. Despite her repeated plea that she wasn't one, she was stuck in a "he said she said" situation with the supposed bully victim providing evidence in their favor. Shortly after she fell into a coma following a suicide attempt, it would come to light that the other students framed her for bullying because she stood up against her classmate's bullies, and the other girls were jealous of her getting the attention of all boys at the school. This is why Motoyasu blindly trusts every girl he meets.
  • Firearms Are Revolutionary:
    • In RoTSH world, firearms only exist in the isolated, high-tech kingdom of Faubrey, with their capabilities treated like hearsay and rumors, and those who recognize one on Misato almost immediately ask if they can buy it from him.
    • Itsuki, who mistakes Misato for locals, warns him to not use his gun willy-nilly because there is a chance that this trope will get out of control.
  • Mage Marksman: The Magic Gunman kind. Misato has Light, Dark, and Fire (with a smidge of Lightning) as element attributes and can cast spells while firing.
  • Morph Weapon: Like most Hero weapons, The Legendary Gun can transform into other kinds of firearms from Muskets to Rifles, but the more modern a gun is, the higher the level requirement.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Itsuki tried to kill Rikert, only for him to use one of his slaves as a meat shield, causing his shot to kill her right in front of her daughter. The incident continues to haunt him afterward.
    • Motoyasu kept his head down when his middle school friend Mellisa was accused of bullying until she fell into a coma from a suicide attempt. Played for Drama as Motoyasu attempting to apply his lesson the first time only led to his death due to trying to not hurt the two girls in his Love Triangle, only for both of them to be Yanderes, and his second attempt was applied to Malty.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Naofumi, seeing the distraught Motoyasu's face after finding out about Malty's true nature, as the two hero parties help clean Lerno village after killing the plant monster, reminds him of himself spending time in the street after he was Frame-Up by Malty. This is what motivates Naofumi to reach out to Motoyasu and break his delusion like Misato asks him to.
Misato, to Naofumi: Remember, there are two heroes Malty has betrayed…
  • Not So Omniscient After All: Aside from Misato fully aware of the possibility of him causing a butterfly effect, thus deluding his meta-knowledge reliability, his meta-knowledge is limited to the first 2 seasons of the anime with few trivia from a friend. The things he didn't know include the fact that Aultcray is the Staff Hero and the details behind Ren's dragon-killing quest. Thankfully, he has information networking from both Fitoria's filolials and Queen Miralia's Shadows to fill up some of the holes.
  • Other Me Annoys Me: Misato informs Itsuki that, if he still kept Mald and other pro-Three Heroes Church people in his party, he would have become an arrogant bully and ignored them bullying the only good person in his party out of jealousy. This infuriates Itsuki.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: To hide her better, Misato asks Fitoria to wear more plain clothes in her human form. However, she is so pretty that people initially assume that she is a royalty in disguise.
  • Past-Life Memories: When Misato sleeps or passed out, he often has bits of Forrest's memories.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Both Misato & Fitoria (in her human form) deliver one to Aultcray after insisting on antagonizing Naofumi because Shield Hero is the champion of Demi-Humans
Misato: For fuck's sake! I'll get to the point, there is something that foolish woman, Myne, wishes to gain by lying to all of you, open your eyes damn it! Without the Shield Hero alongside the others, this world will be doomed! All because of that woman, so whatever scheme you cooked up tonight, I suggest you drop it so your family can be safe!
Aultcray: You imbecile! Protecting my family is EXACTLY WHAT I AM DOING! Something you should understand!
Misato: I do, I really do…but at least I know I would be fighting people who were like my family's murderers, but you and Myne damned someone who had nothing to do with the war! In order for the world to be saved ALL the Heroes need to be strong. Sword, Spear, Bow, and SHIELD! Are you willing to risk everyone, including your family by crippling him when fighting the waves?
Fitoria: How could the Staff choose such a foolish person?
    • After Naofumi wins the race against Motoyasu, Fitoria tries to talk to Motoyasu eye-to-eye, but he keeps focusing on making her leave Misato and join his party while insisting that Malty did nothing wrong, causing Fitoria to slap him in frustration.
Fitoria: How odd, to meet a human who uses their willpower to almost forget memories…You are perhaps…*Deep Sigh* The Most Foolish Cardinal Hero I have ever met in my… Life. I question the Spear's judgment in choosing you. *Leaves*
Motoyasu: W-wait Fia, don't be mad!
Fitoria: I am not mad, I am disappointed… This world isn't some place for you to act without a care.
    • Misato delivers one to Mald as he curb-stomps him.
Misato: For a Noble, you are quite the predictable thug.
Mald: How dare you say that! I am no thug, not like those uncivilized peasants!
Misato: But you fight like a caveman with a big stick.
      Mald: CAVEMAN!?
Misato: You take every chance to show off your superiority with your loud obnoxious voice, kicking weaker people down. I guess before you left, you originally planned on taking the rewards behind Itsuki's back, like a typical thug, using people for your own selfish agendas. People like you have no righteousness. You are scum, regardless of whether you are a Noble or not. [...] You come up with lies and petty excuses to justify your horrendous and self-serving actions. In fact, I bet you don't actually believe in the religion, you just allied yourself to the Pope because there is something you wish to gain for more power and wealth.
  • Sensor Character: Fitoria can detect her surroundings and the intent of other creatures. Later, she gives Misato a Filolial he named Ace whose sensory ability is almost as good as her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Rifana is rescued from Idol Rabier by Misato and later joins his party with Keel.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: The locals who eventually realize that Misato is a Hero mistake him for the Projectile Hero. He decides not to correct them to keep the Legendary Gun's existence secret.
  • Survivor Guilt: Misato believes that the Gun makes a mistake by choosing him when his friends who died alongside him would've been better choices, with one of them being smarter when it comes to firearms, while another is a bigger fan of RoTSH, and therefore savvier about this world.
  • Talking to the Dead:
    • Misato & Fitoria often talk to the graves of Mamoru & Forrest, the previous Shield & Gun Hero.
    • Keel & Rifana's visit to Lurolona includes talking to the grave of their parents before Raphtalia's, promising them that they will find their daughter and protect her.
    • Misato creates gravestones for his parents and friends who died alongside him back in his previous world, apologizing to the former for breaking their promise of having a safe life, while wishing the latter to be here with him or get chosen to be the Gun Hero instead of him.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Motoyasu, surprisingly, due to both his additional backstory and the fact that he was broken out of his ignorance and forced to face the consequences that his canon counterpart was blind to. In his first life, his inaction caused a girl to fall into a coma from a suicide attempt, and his effort to be better was repaid by being killed by two Yanderes. Then, as the Spear Hero, he finds out that Malty, the woman he always sided with, truly is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who wouldn't hesitate to frame him for abuse if he ever got suspicious, with all but one other member of his party more than willing to play along with her. And then he later discovers that the seed he planted to help a starving village was a plant monster that expels poison, causing a lot of people, including children he was playing with the last time he visits the village, to die.
  • Two-Keyed Lock: Forrest managed to create something that can destroy the creator of The Waves behind a gate that can only be unlocked by all five Cardinal Heroes at the same time.
