Pokémon: Roses of the Garden is a Pokémon fanfiction by SugarButterfly432.

A mysterious, huge golden flower blooms in one of the rose gardens of the Hall of Origin. In it, a seemly, healthy baby human girl is born from it. Not knowing what do to, or what will she become, the Legendary and Mythical Pokemon decide to raise her themselves. Giving her the name Alma. What will the years hold for the girl and her adoptive family?

You can read the fanfic here and here.

The side story Pokémon: Colors of the Roses is also in the writing process. You can read it here and here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Ash was the Pokémon Master and Serena was the Performer Queen before their untimely deaths.
  • Age Lift: Ash, Serena, and the rest of their friends are described in the story as being young adults. In canon, they're still kids/teenagers.
  • Ambiguously Human: Alma was born out of a flower that appeared out of nowhere in the rose garden and shows that her voice can let the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon know where she's at.
  • Body Horror:
    • Cain's entire body became monstrous after the accident of his machine.
    • The humans who were part of Cain's experiment ended up with Pokémon body parts after his machine was used on them. However, the effects of the machine were said to be impossible for them to reverse back to their original body.
  • Born from Plants: Alma is born out of a golden flower that appeared one day in one of the rose gardens in the Hall of Origin.
  • Celebrating the Heroes: Chapter 16 reveals that people have been celebrating Ash's heroic actions every year by having a festival in his honor.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: It's revealed in Chapter 16 that Ash and Serena married each other at some point before Cain created his machine.
  • The Chosen One: Ash was this in the past. It's revealed that he's long-deceased by the events of the story after he battled Cain.
  • Cool Big Bro: Keldeo acts like an older brother towards Alma and often plays with her. Alma herself even calls him "Big Brother Keldeo".
  • Death by Adaptation: Ash and all his friends he made throughout his journey are all dead. However, it's rather justified since it has been years by the time the story takes place.
  • Doting Parent: The Legendary Pokémon, especially Mew, are loving towards Alma.
  • Evil Red Head: Rosalind is a redhead and working for Cain.
  • Fantastic Racism: Unsurprising, some of the Pokémon at the Hall of Origin have this attitude towards Alma because she's human. It doesn't matter if she was adopted by the Legendaries.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: William's parents are shown to be disapproving of him going on a Pokémon journey once he turns 18. Instead, they want him to stay at home and marry a girl that they'll choose for him.
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Some of the Legendary Pokémon are doting towards Alma while others are trying to be firm with her. Regardless, they all show to genuinely care about her and do show to want her to be a good person.
  • The Ghost: Ash Ketchum is mentioned in a few chapters. It's later revealed that he died years ago to stop Cain from taking over the world.
  • God Is Flawed: The Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are all just as flawed as humans.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Alma has blonde hair and is a nice person despite getting in trouble.
  • Happily Adopted: Alma is soon taken in by the Legendary Pokémon. The chapters show how happy she is with them. Even when she finds out that she's a human, Alma's still happy to be with them regardless.
  • Hero-Worshipper:
    • William greatly admires Ash a lot and desires to have his Pokémon journey once he turns 18. Unfortunately, his parents wants him to took over their family fortune and settled down with a girl instead.
    • After learning about Ash, Alma ends up becoming interesting in him and always asks the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon to tell her about the adventures of Ash and company from their youths.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Ash sacrificed himself to Cain's machine from destroying the world by using his aura.
  • Home of the Gods: The Hall of Origin is where the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon all live most of the time. They still go to the Human World to perform their duties.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Unlike the other young Pokémon, Alma is homeschooled by Slowking, who was chosen by Arceus to teach Alma. Though she doesn't take her lessons as seriously as she should.
  • Humans Are Flawed: Chapter 15 has the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon explain to Alma that humans are very flawed creatures and that even the kindest of humans have their flaws as well as showing her the good and bad side of humanity.
  • Interclass Friendship: William and Cal are best friends, despite the former being the heir to his family's business and the latter being from the working-class.
  • Interspecies Adoption: The Legendary and Mythical Pokémon adopted a human girl into their family.
  • Interspecies Friendship: As the tradition of the Pokémon series, Alma's close friends with some of the Pokémon outside of her adoptive family.
  • Lady-In-Waiting: Both Gardevoir and Florges were originally Arceus' servants until he decided to trust them to take care of Alma.
  • Nice Guy: Ash was pretty much a friendly guy towards everyone.
  • Pals with Jesus: Ash was good friends with almost all the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon who still mourn his death.
  • Parental Abandonment:
    • It's implied that Adrien is an orphan as he lives with two people who aren't related to him.
    • Both Shin and Kai used to live on the streets before they were taken in by their elderly boss and became Pokémon hunters to repay him for his kindness, with no mention of what happened to their parents that led them to live on the streets. The only known adult figure from their old life is Shin mentioning his old man, but it's unknown if he meant his father or grandfather.
    • Chapter 19 reveals that Ash and Serena had a daughter together. However, Serena died during childbirth and Ash sacrificed himself so his daughter would have a life in a world where humans and Pokémon could live together.
  • Parental Love Song: Zygarde/Squishy sings Alma the same song that Bonnie used to sing to him when he was traveling with her, Ash, and the others.
  • Parental Substitute: A family example. Many of the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon act like parents to Alma.
  • Posthumous Character: Ash and his friends are long dead by the time of the events of the story.
  • Private Tutor: Slowking was chosen by Arceus to teach Alma when she became old enough to start studying. Slowking takes pride in being chosen by the Alpha Pokémon and feels honored by this. However, Alma doesn't take her studies seriously, as she tends to run away from her lessons whenever Slowking turns his back, only to find her set empty. Because of this, Slowking always has to go after her since he refuses to be defeated by a child.
  • Raised By Legendaries: The story tells the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon raising a human girl like their own.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: An Azumaril who tends the rose garden went to it to water the roses when she heard the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon arguing. Not wanting to get in the crossfire, the Azumaril quickly turned around and left.
  • Skipping School: Alma has a habit of skipping her lessons with Slowking and running off to have fun. In Chapter 11, Alma made her friends (Vulpix, Riolu, and Smoochum) skip school just to hang out with her. This didn't end well, with her friends now forbidden by their parents to see her again.
  • So Proud of You: Chapter 15 reveals that when Ash finally became a Pokémon Master at the age of 23, all the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon were watching him and were proud of him for finally making his dream come true. To them, no other human deserved that title more than Ash.
  • Something about a Rose: The Hall of Origin has plenty of gardens, many of which are roses. A rose garden is where Alma was "born". Given the title, roses are going to be a very important part of the story.
  • Token Human: Alma is the only human in the entire Hall of Origin.
  • Was Once a Man: Cain was originally a human man, but when he got caught in the middle of the explosion of his invention, his entire body became monstrous. To the point that the Legendary Pokémon now call him a monster because of both his appearance and his cruelty towards both humans and Pokémon.
