Fanfic / Hebert Family Values

Go To

HebertFamilyValues is a crossover between Worm and The Addams Family by Ellf.

After facing down Lung and meeting the Undersiders, Taylor comes home to find her supposedly dead mother not only had an Unexplained Recovery, but brought some... eccentric relatives: the Addams family.

Things take a turn for the weird after Taylor panickedly pepper-sprays Uncle Fester (and yes, he is her uncle — Annette is Gomez and Fester's little sister), and he likes it.

This fanfic contains examples of the following:

  • Above Good and Evil: The Addams take this kind of view: what matters to them isn't good or bad, but ambition and drive. If a supervillain manages to build a criminal empire, then good for them: they showed hard work and tenacity.
  • Axes at School: Pugsley apparently gets into a swordfight in Winslow, with Gladly as the referee and nobody objecting to it.
  • The Bermuda Triangle: Annette and Fester flew a plane through it. The ensuing crash resulted in Annette losing contact with the Addamses and becoming a Hebert.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Do NOT call Taylor, or anyone in the Addams Family, a "freak".
    • The Addams family really can't stand treason: Taylor's cousins were about to go to town on Emma had she not held them back.
  • Birds of a Feather: Wednesday Addams and Sophia Hess of all people.
  • Bitter Almonds: Taylor's only warning that the syrup contains cyanide is that she notices this taste in it.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The Addams Family has this in comparison to Brockton.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Sophia stops attempting to bully Taylor after realizing she has to go through Wednesday.
  • Buried Alive: When they were younger, Taylor played this with Emma. It's part of why Emma is terrified of her, to the point that the bullying campaign is entirely to keep Taylor from returning to her old self.
  • Call-Back: The events of Addams Family Values are mentioned as having happened some time ago.
  • Canon Welding:
  • Crazy-Prepared: Taylor wears her costume under civilian clothes when visiting the Addamses.
  • Crossover Relatives: Annette is an Addams by birth.
  • Deal with the Devil: Discussed when Wednesday asks about Taylor's Traumatic Superpower Awakening.
Wednesday: Dear cousin, how, precisely, did you obtain the power of controlling insects? Deals with dark gods? Slaughtering some helpless creature and feed it to something powerful to gain strength?
  • Do Wrong, Right:
    • When she walks in on Taylor about to cut Emma open, Annette tells her she can't do that... as she's using the wrong type of scalpel for a first incision.
    • By the time of her third visit to Taylor's operating table, Emma is more annoyed by how ugly the ceiling is than Taylor cutting her open without anesthetic, and is incredibly angry when she finally realises Taylor hasn't been wearing a surgical mask for any of the operations.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Morticia on the way to Winslow. Even Skidmark is left wondering why she's driving so crazy.
  • Eat the Bomb: Uncle Fester, as "Dean of Demolitions", knowingly swallows a Bakuda bomb with no ill effect.
  • Epic Fail: Taylor's attempt to send a bug swarm on Wendesday and Pugsley is less "Biblical Swarm" and more "bug effigy getting into a swordfight with Pugsley".
  • Flynning: Gomez and Danny start fencing each other at regular intervals.
    Danny: For Annette! En Garde!
  • Food Fight: Sophia accidentally starts one while attempting to bully Wednesday.
  • The Gadfly: Wednesday accuses Gladly of being one.
  • The Ghost: Cousin Itt is mentioned but hasn't appeared on-screen (yet).
    • The Undersiders and the ABB are mentioned but, since the events of Arc 2 were averted and the Bank Robbery and Bakuda's rampage haven't happened yet, have not made their appearance so far.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Taylor chooses to out herself in a last-ditch retaliation on Wednesday when she is certain she'll be electrocuted.
  • Harmless Electrocution: One of Wednesday's favourite games is "Is there a god?", in which a victim is strapped into an electric chair to receive this.
  • High-Voltage Death: What Taylor assumes is about to happen when strapped into an electric chair for "Is there a god?", so she sics her bugs on Wednesday in retaliation.
  • I Ate WHAT?!:
    • Taylor has this reaction to Addams family food.
    • Julia has this reaction after finding out the ingredients of Taylor's cookies.
  • Incredibly Lame Pun: When an apple is sent flying, it is compared to an Alexandria Package, "an Apple-xandria package, if you will."
    • That same apple becomes applesauce on the wall after a baseball pitcher throws it at Sophia.
  • In Love with Your Carnage:
    • Gomez thinks Lung would be a suitable boyfriend for Wednesday.
    • Morticia is impressed by Skidmark running a drug business. Averted for the inverse, as Skidmark is clearly creeped out.
    • Sophia is deeply impressed by Wednesday's 'predatory' demeanour, and thinks she's a good influence on Taylor. Emma is unwilling to tell Sophia about the various "games" Taylor is played with, and is planning to play with, her, out of fear that Sophia will want to join in.
  • In the Blood: Roguish behaviour, a taste for the macabre, and a low to mid-level Brute rating are all apparent Addams family traits.
  • Made of Iron: An Addams Family trait. Uncle Fester can Eat the Bomb with no ill effect, and Annette can survive one going off in her face.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Model trains crashing is mentioned.
    • Taylor sees a vision of the Simurgh sitting on the shoulder of a Titan in her artwork.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • According to Wednesday, the Addams Family is responsible for at least one Trigger Event.
    • Annette and Fester had a plane crash in the Bermuda Triangle.
    • Danny learning how to swordfight in college.
  • No-Sell:
    • Uncle Fester No-Sells Taylor's pepper spray.
    • Uncle Fester No-Sells a Bakuda Bomb he swallowed.
    • Wednesday No-Sells the trio's attempt to bully her.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Morticia chides Skidmark for swearing in front of Wednesday and Pugsley.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Lurch. Lampshaded by Taylor when she wonders if it's a Mover rating.
  • Off with His Head!: Wednesday's standard treatment of dolls.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Taylor when she notices unfamiliar relatives at her home.
    • Taylor again when she notices the large mansion that wasn't there before.
    • Taylor after being told she enjoyed cyanide and arsenic syrup.
    • Taylor when Wednesday straps her into an electric chair and then turns it on.
    • Kurt when Gomez's rhetoric regarding Lung unsettles him.
    • Skidmark when Morticia unsettles him.
    • Taylor when the Trio attempt to pick on Wednesday.
    • Taylor when Sophia's ink-spill accidentally completes the artwork rather than ruining it.
    • Emma when Wednesday and Taylor turn the tables on her.
    • Julia after eating some of Taylor's cricket and arsenic cookies.
    • Armsmaster in an Omake when learning the Addams family are in town.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Seeing her parents serenading one another is one horror Taylor would not like to endure.
  • Pet the Dog: Gomez bankrolls the reopening of the ferry.
  • Quirky Household: The Addams are quite off to others, but Daniel and Taylor are happy to be apart of their family.
  • Sanity Slippage: Emma suffers one after Wednesday Addams single-handedly overturns her worldview. It gets worse as Taylor decides she wants her sister-in-all-but-blood back, since Taylor is convinced that her friend is still in there somewhere, she just needs to figure out what procedure is necessary to get her out.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: Taylor does this to Emma three times, since she knows her best friend is still in there and she wants to find where exactly she is. According to Emma, this was a fairly common occurrence back when they were friends, with Taylor also regularly cutting parts off of Emma and sewing them back on perfectly.
  • Taking You with Me: The reason Taylor sics her bugs on Wednesday during a round of "Is there a god?". Since the electric chair isn't lethal, the bug swarm she summons isn't lethal either.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Emma notes to herself that the "game" she and Taylor, "The Way to a Girl's Heart", sounds pretty perverted when she describes it as her being strapped to the dining room table, naked and gagged. The reality is apparently far more horrifying, with the implication that it involved Taylor cutting her open to find the way to a girl's heart.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Discussed. Wednesday is familiar with the concept.
Wednesday: Ah, one of those superpowers. You’re a parahuman in addition to being an Addams.
Taylor: Hebert. Mom took Dad’s name.
Wednesday: You have Addams blood in you. Unless you drain it out, it will never leave.
Taylor: Let’s avoid that scenario for now. We can come back to it if absolutely necessary.
Wednesday: So, how did you obtain this power, exactly? I have never heard of an Addams having a Trigger Event, causing them, maybe, but never having one.
Taylor: It probably was a combination of things, but ultimately it stemmed from betrayal.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behaviour: Before her mother's apparent death, Taylor was apparently very much an Addams' child, with one of her favourite games being surgically removing and reattaching parts of Emma's body, and she has fond memories of the time she buried Emma alive.
  • Unfortunate Name/ Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Taylor wonders what parent would give their child names like "Fester" or "Dementia".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Swordfights, even in Winslow.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Word of God states that Emma is this during the chapter told from her perspective, but it is downplayed as a lot of what Taylor did (and does) to her during that chapter really did happen, and they are why she is an unreliable narrator.
  • The Unsmile: Taylor describes Lurch's smile as "the kind of smile that only a mother could love. On a corpse. Six feet under. Where she couldn’t see it."
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Annette's return and the Addamses moving to Brockton Bay results in Taylor's Addams tendencies, which had initially been suppressed by the shock of her mother's apparent death, then by Emma's bullying campaign, to resurface, resulting in Emma slowly going crazy before giving up and becoming Taylor's best friend/favourite toy once again.
  • Wham Line:
    • "Couldn't we just wake her anyway, Danny?" -Annette's first line after being thought dead for years.
    • "Cyanide and arsenic give it the bite that offsets the sweetness quite well." -Wednesday.
  • Xenofiction: One of the chapters is written from the POV of an apple.
