Detective Midoriya is a My Hero Academia fanfiction by rogueptoridactyl.

After the sludge incident, Izuku Midoriya's dream was officially crushed. However, a later experience takes the boy in a new direction. Izuku had never really contemplated being a detective, but his whole life he'd only ever wanted to help people with a smile on his face. Thanks to some luck and an entire police station, Izuku's dream is reborn.

You can read the fanfic here and here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Just like in canon, Endeavor is this towards Todoroki. Midoriya is actually trying to help Todoroki with this. He does manage to do so.
  • The Ace: Izuku. Youngest Police Officer and Youngest Police Detective in Japan, EMT certified, Quirk Analysis skills that outmatches veterans with actual analysis Quirks, and has three college degrees by the time he is 18.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Sir Nighteye laughs so hard he nearly cries when he finds out that Izuku managed to defeat the Leader of the League of Villains with a Chinese finger trap.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Many of Midoriya's relationships have changed in the story.
    • His canon relationship with All Might is changed here. Instead of their father/son bond, they have somewhat of a complicated relationship.
    • Izuku ends up having a father/son relationship with Detective Tsukauchi instead of how they rarely speak to each other in the canon series.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Zig-zagging with Kamui Woods. While he's a hero in canon, he still chews out Midoriya for putting himself in danger in the sludge incident. Here, however, he tells Midoriya that his action was noble but gently tells him to let the actual Pros handle the danger. He even defends Midoriya from Death Arms and Mt. Lady.
  • After-Action Patch-Up: Izuku winds up being a part of the police response to the USJ attack as he's EMT certified. He notices Todoroki's abuse scars and manages to wrap up Ochako's sprained ankle well enough that Recovery Girl is impressed
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Izuku is the youngest member of the Police Force. His nickname is "Little Midori" or "Little Midoriya" depending on the person.
  • Badass Normal: Midoriya is this.
  • Befriending the Enemy: Midoriya manages to befriend the League of Villains during his captivity, to the point the entire League sneaks into the hospital after visiting hours to check up on him after he's near-fatally shot during a case.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Izuku tends to develop this whenever kids/younger teens are involved.
  • Broken Pedestal: Izuku's opinion towards All Might, to the point of selling all his All Might merchandise and feeling anxiety whenever he sees the man in person while on duty, terrified that the Hero will recognize him and destroy this dream too.
  • Broken Tears: Downplayed. Ochako sobs into Izuku's shoulder after the USJ attack as everything hits her at once now that she's no longer fighting for her life. She pulls herself back together after she gets it out of her system
  • The Bully: Bakugo bullied Midoriya when they went to the same school as in canon.
  • Child Prodigy: Well teenage prodigy. Now that Izuku is no longer in a toxic school environment with encouragement from authority figures, he manages to clear his first year of high school in a week. A college professor all but blackmails his college to let Izuku get into his Quirk Analysis class, and by Chapter 7 he's EMT certified note  and a provisional Police Officer. At the age of 15.
  • Cool Big Bro: Izuku certainly serves this role to the younger kids he saves.
  • Cowboy Cop: Zigzagged. Izuku only has one formal reprimand on his file, which was a loss of police equipment when a Villain ate his fanny pack when he threw it at him in desperation. But the Police Academy really dislikes him because he seems to encourage trainees to do similar antics and they have to remind the trainees that Izuku has much better Quirk analysis skills than them.
  • Crisis Catch And Carry: A Running Gag in-universe to the point it's called the Midoriya Snatch ‘n Sprint. Izuku has done this three times on screen alone. After a timeskip, it's said he did it 47 more times.
  • Demoted to Extra: Some of Class 1-A hasn't appeared much in the story.
  • Downer Beginning: The story starts off with All Might forgetting his own Hero lessons in a moment of panic, and Izuku takes a bullet for him. The first chapter ends with him bleeding out and falling unconscious from the blood loss as All Might has a breakdown.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Even after Izuku's Famed In-Story status, a lot of people don't recognize him.
  • Famed In-Story: By the time the story catches up to the first chapter, Izuku is well-known for his actions.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Officer Mori, and the feeling goes both ways.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Izuku and the League of Villains actually have a formal agreement for Izuku to play poker with them. Pretty much they don't do anything in his jurisdiction that would force him to have to arrest them or tell him about their illegal activities, and he doesn't give them any intel regarding the activities of the police or Pro Heroes.
  • Get Out!: When All Might goes to the hospital to check on Izuku, Midoriya's coworkers make it very clear that he isn't welcome.
Mori: Aren't we supposed to have some semblance of dignity? And you, we belong here. You don't. Family. Only.
  • Happily Adopted:
    • Shoto has been informally adopted by the Midoriyas after he managed to emancipate himself. And Eri was formally adopted by Inko.
    • Makoto Tsukauchi declares herself Izuku's adopted aunt, even if her brother doesn't actually adopt him.
  • Hollywood Tactics: Sir Nighteye's plan for the raid on the Shie Hassaikai has elements of this. Something that gets called out by the Police.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Izuku ends up taking online lessons after he and his mother move out of their apartment.
  • How We Got Here: The first chapter tells the readers about how Midoriya became a detective. After taking a bullet that was meant for All Might.
  • In Spite of a Nail
    • Ochako still uses her Quirk to save Izuku from a fall. But instead of UA it's at the mall when Class 1-A is shopping for the training camp.
    • Izuku still winds up at the training camp but as a field medic.
    • Izuku still gets injured a lot, though nowhere near as much as in canon.
    • Shoto still thinks that Izuku is the secret love child of someone he has a close relationship with. This time it's Detective Tsukauchi.
  • Jerkass: The story has a pantry of unpleasant characters. The cakes go to Officer Mori for doing paperwork while Izuku is running screaming from a kidnapper while carrying the victim.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Officer Mori has a couple of moments like this. Immediately stepping up to donate blood to Izuku while they're both en route to the hospital is one moment.
  • Kid Detective: Midoriya decided to become a detective shortly after the slug villain attack. He's still a teenager, but like in canon, he puts his life at risk to protect and save others.
  • Lethal Joke Item:
    • Inverted. It's a Lifesaving joke item. Izuku manages to save his life by trapping two of Tomura Shigaraki's fingers in a Chinese finger trap.
    • Later on he manages to neutralize a Villain's Quirk with a gallon of lemonade.
  • Mama Bear: Inko is this towards her son.
  • Mistaken for an Imposter: Sir Nighteye's first encounter with Izuku is to accuse him of impersonating a cop due to his age. After a frosty serving of humble pie at the Police Station, Sir Nighteye apologizes.
  • The Mole: Midoriya becomes this for the police department as Deku, working undercover as a villain figure while sending information to the police.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: All Might has this reaction when Midoriya took the bullet for him.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: As Shigaraki says, both he and Midoriya were mistreated by society and ignored by the heroes. Shigaraki even offers a We Can Rule Together to Midoriya, offer him a Quirk if the latter agrees. Of course Midoriya would refuse, though he admits to Tsukauchi he was very tempted for a moment, and Shigaraki holds out belief that Midoriya will eventually join him.
  • Noodle Incident: Izuku earned his first formal reprimand after a villain ate his (third) Save My Fanny Pack.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Tsukauchi acts like a father figure to Midoriya.
    • Izuku is a father to Eri to the point she calls him Dadku.
  • Paying for the Action Scene: Izuku overpays some kids for the pitcher of lemonade he grabbed from them to neutralize a Villain's Quirk.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Izuku manages to predict when three Villains are going to make an appearance after a long time quiet, which leads to them being caught. And since they're caught, that means All Might doesn't use up his limited time in his Hero Form. Which means he's on-site at the USJ when the League attacks, which results in much fewer injuries than in canon.
    • Due to Izuku being undercover in the Shie Hassaikai, the raid goes much better. For starters he manages to swap out the permanent Quirk erasing bullets with the temporary ones.
    • Izuku's status as the Quirkless Police Officer that took down Stain kicked off a Quirkless pride movement.
  • Police Are Useless: Like in canon, the Police Force is overshadowed by the Pro Heroes to the public. They still work hard to stop villains and criminals with the heroes.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Officer Mori was sent to Izuku's station in hopes that Detective Tsukauchi could get him to shape up.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Once Izuku wakes up from a coma induced due to the gunshot wound he received in the prologue, the League of Villains come to check up on him. While the other villains at least attempt to be stealthy, Dabi just walks to Izuku's hospital room in his usual outfit. It works.
  • Running Gag:
    • Izuku keeps getting stabbed in the leg.
    • In-universe Izuku's tendency to run away screaming with a kid to save them has been called the Midoriya Snatch ‘n Sprint. On-screen, he saved Eri, Kouta, and Kimiko. Off-screen, he saved another 50 kids doing it.
    • The Police Station going thrifty on party favors for celebrations. Izuku's party for him becoming a Proper Police Officer has a cake with a discount sticker that says "Happy Retirement". When he becomes a Detective the banner at his party says "It's a Girl" with Detective written over Girl. Eventually Izuku comes to the opinion they're doing it on purpose.
  • Shipper on Deck: A lot of the female police officers at Izuku's station ship him with Ochako.
  • Ship Tease: Both Izuku and Ochaco share many moments of this.
  • Taking the Bullet: Izuku takes a bullet meant for All Might in the first chapter.
  • Tragic Dream: Midoriya's dream of wanting to be a hero was crushed in this story due to not having a Quirk. However, he managed to have another in the form of becoming a detective.
  • Urban Legend: As a result of "Deku" never showing his face in full and using makeup to alter his looks for each mission, Izuku's alter ego becomes an almost mythical figure to the criminal underground. Characters refer to him as a cryptid on several occasions.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Both Midoriya and Bakugo were childhood friends like in canon. But after Bakugo had developed his Quirk, he began to bully Midoriya mercilessly.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: All over the place.
    • A lot of people want to beat the crap out of All Might for discouraging Izuku from being a hero, not that they know it's actually All Might. Inko eventually reveals the truth, and that she knew all along, after Izuku is near-fatally shot Taking the Bullet for All Might.
    • Sir Nighteye gets ripped into for his plan during the Shie Hassaikai raid. Doubly so for not telling the Heroes they had an undercover officer embedded in the organization. Izuku has to fight Lemillion while escaping with Eri.
