Goar Georges Claisse (January 11, 1941 - November 15, 2021) was a French actor, voice actor and screenwriter.
He was best known for being the French dubbing voice of Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in Star Wars from 1999 to 2021 (from The Phantom Menace all the way to the first season of The Bad Batch — Edgar Givry has replaced him since), as well as the regular voice of Bill Nighy (including Captain Davy Jones in the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean films and Viktor in the Underworld film series) and Bruno Ganz (such as Adolf Hitler in Downfall).
He also occasionally dubbed Ed Harris, David Bradley (Lord Walder Frey in Game of Thrones), Albert Finney, Anthony Hopkins and James Caan.
Acting-wise, he had small roles in films such as Is Paris Burning? and The Night of the Generals.
Tropes & Trivia in his works:
- The Pete Best: He wasn't the first voice actor to dub Palpatine in Star Wars (Jean Claudio did for The Empire Strikes Back and Henri Virlogeux for Return of the Jedi), but he certainly remains the most well remembered and prolific in the role. He also redubbed the Empire Strikes Back scene in the 2004 DVD George Lucas Altered Version (which has stuck for the Blu-ray).
- Typecasting: Typically provided his authoritative voice to villains who have much theatricality.
