Films — Animation

• Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was renamed Falafel Rain, after Israel's national dish.
• The three Despicable Me films becameGanuv al Hayare'ach, Ganuv al Haminionim and Ganuv al Haolam, respectively. "Ganuv" is a word that sounds like the word "Steal" in hebrew, but also means "to be crazy" about something. So the Hebrew titles translate to "Crazy about the moon", "Crazy about the minions" and "Crazy about the world". Both Minions Spin-Offs didn't get a different title in Hebrew, however.
• Don Bluth:
  • An American Tail became Fievel and the American Dream.
  • The Land Before Time became Journey to the valley of dreams.
  • Rock-A-Doodle became The Rock & Roll Chicken.
  • .The Secret of NIMH was originally called Brisby's magical joruney in hebrew. It was later renamed to Of Magic and Mice.
  • A Troll in Central Park became "The Troll in the Magical Park"
• DreamWorks Animation:
  • Western Animation/Abominable became Magic of Monster.
  • Antz became Ant Job.
  • Bee Movie became A Beehive in a Movie
  • The How to Train Your Dragon Franchise became My First Dragon.
  • Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted became Madagascar 3: Circusing Europe
  • Megamind became Mega-Brain
  • Puss in Boots (2011) became Shrek's Cat, despite the titular character being based on a folk tale and not originating in Shrek, and despite the fact that Shrek himself doesn't appear in the film. The sequel is named Shrek's Cat: One more wish and enough.
  • Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken became Ruby against the tide.
  • Shark Tale became Catch the Shark.
  • Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron became Feral Horse. The TV Series' name is the same, though.
  • Trolls Band Together became Trolls 3: Hakol Tov. The subtitle means "The voice is good", but it also means "Everything's good.
• Free Birds became To fly on the time.
• Frozen (2013) became Break the Ice.
• Inside Out became It's all in the head.
• Kubo and the Two Strings became Kubo: Legend of a Samurai.

Films — Live-Action

• An industry running gag is translating thriller (erotic or otherwise) titles as a "Deadly X" or "Fatal X" with the X being vaguely related to the movie subject / original title (for example, Terminator got translated to something along the lines of "Deadly Mission" or "Deadly Quest").
• Airplane! is "Tisa Ne'ima!", which stands for Have a Pleasant Flight!
• Israel is one of the numerous countries where Alien is titled "The Eighth Passenger". Aliens is titled "Return of the Eighth Passenger".
• Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery became Austin Powers: A Spy with Style.
• Cocaine Bear became חומר דוב, a pun roughly translatable as "Beary good stuff".
• Die Hard is "Met Likhyot", which can be translated as "Dying to Live" or "Dead Desperate to Live".
• The Naked Gun was the translated as "“Ha'ekdah met mitzhok" - "The gun died from laughing too much \ the dead funny gun". This led to a whole host of "The X 'met' to Y" parody and comedy titles.
• When Scary Movie came out, it was named "Dying to Scream". This caused a whole bunch of comedy films to be named "Dying to X", including the Chris Rock comedy Down To Earth (2001), which was named "Dying to Laugh".
• Evan Almighty became A Flood of Troubles.
• The Hangover was translated to Hebrew as "On your way to the wedding, stop at Vegas" with the sequal naturally replacing Vegas with Bangkok.
• Heathers became The Class Queen.
• Hoosiers became Glory Days.
• Independence Day is "The Third Day". Probably because Israel's own Independence Day is a very important holiday.
• The Martian became Saving Mark Watney.
• In a somewhat older example, the 1971 film McCabe & Mrs. Miller was called in Israel "The Card Player and the Prostitute". Subtle, huh?
• Probably the most egregious example is the 2002 film Riders (also known as Steal) which was released under the name "High Risk" - not the Hebrew equivalent of the words "High Risk", but the transliteration of the English words "High Risk".
• Scott Pilgrim vs. The World became The Exes of My Girlfriend.
• The Shawshank Redemption became Walls of Hope.
• Short Circuit is Miraculous Malfunction.
• To Kill a Mockingbird was originally aired as Death of the Nightingale. It was later renamed to the same name as the Hebrew edition of the book (See "Books" category below)
• Top Gun became Love in the skies.
• Trading Places became Change Your Place, Change Your Luck.
• The Wizard of Oz is translated literally, with "Oz" rendered as "Utz"—a place mentioned in the Book of Job and otherwise unknown.

Literature

• Diary of a Wimpy Kid:
  • Book 4, Dog Days, became "Deadly Summer".
  • Book 5, The Ugly Truth, became "Life Facts".
  • Book 6, Cabin Fever, became "Frostbite".
  • Book 8, Hard Luck, became "Luck Games".
  • Book 9, The Long Haul, became "A Vacation on Wheels".
  • Book 10, Old School, became "Voices from the Past".
  • Book 12, The Getaway, became "Emergency Exit".
  • Book 13, The Meltdown, became "The Cold War".
  • Book 14, Wrecking Ball, became "House of Wreckage".
  • Book 16, Big Shot, became "Fateful Shoot''.
  • Book 17, Diper Överlöde, became "Battle of the Bands"
  • Book 18, No Brainer, became "Open Mind".
• Several Dr. Seuss books, including:
  • And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street became רחוב תות, סיפור לא פשוט (Mulberry Street, a non-simple story)
  • One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish became דברים מוזרים קורים בספרים (Weird things happen in books)
  • The Cat in the Hat became חתול תעלול (trickster cat)
  • Green Eggs and Ham became לא רעב ולא אוהב ([I'm] not hungry and [I] don't like [it]"; the food itself is never named in the translation.), because pork is considered taboo, and isn't common in Israel.
  • Oh, The Places You'll Go! became אם יוצאים מגיעים למקומות נפלאים (If you get out, you get to amazing places)
• The Mortal Instruments series as a whole became "Children of the Nephilim". The books' titles, however, are direct translations.
• To Kill a Mockingbird became Do not touch the Nightingale, as mockingbirds aren't common in Israel. The change was carried on to The Movie.

Live-Action TV

• The Canadian series The Collector was first titled The Soul Collector. It was later changed into The Collector, a technically correct translation incorrect in context, since Hebrew uses a different word for the collection of debts.
• Oddly, when Mad Men was first broadcast in Israel, it was titled "The Men of Madison Avenue" (a sort of play on The Bridges of Madison County - the Hebrew words for "men" and "bridges" only differ by one character), since the original Double-Meaning Title would be meaningless in Hebrew. However, after the first season the series was renamed and simply transliterated as "Mad Men".
• Better Call Saul became "Count on Saul".
• When Moonlight was about to air, despite its very simple and straightforward title, a contest was held to select a local title. "Dark Hours" won.
• Wonder Woman (1975) was titled "Eyshet Chayil"—the first two words of Proverbs 31, usually translated "A Woman of Valor". The program was shown after sundown on Fridays, when observant Jews do not watch television—and wives are praised with Proverbs 31—leading to unintentional cognitive dissonance when observant Jews complained about "Eyshet Chayil" being shown when they could not watch it.
• Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is named "Ninja Turtles: The Next Generation", despite the fact that it features all four original turtles, with the only addition to the team being Venus de Milo, who's around the same age as them.

Video Games

• Loom is titled The Weavers. There is a (voiceless) Hebrew version.
• Lemmings became Namlulim, which is not the hebrew word for "Lemmings".

Western Animation

• Adventure Time became The Adventures of Finn and Jake.
• Back at the Barnyard became Friends at the Barn.
• Breadwinners became משוגעגע, which, being a pun, can only be very loosely translated as Quackin' Mad. Specifically, it's a promanteau of the word for "Crazy" (משוגע) and the Hebrew onomatopeia for a duck's quack (גע-גע).
• Wander over Yonder became Wander saves the World.
• Transformers are known in Israel as Robotricks. That name is also used for the Autobots.
• In Israel, both Batman Beyond, X-Men: Evolution and Young Justice are known as ______ - The Next Generation - probably after Star Trek: The Next Generation (with "______ " standing for Justice League in the case of YJ). Never mind that it is wrong with the second example as the characters in X-Men Evolution are neither the children of the original X-Men nor are they a later generation of X-Men from the originals, but just younger versions of the originals, and in the third example "Young Justice" is set in a completely different continuity than the one it claims to be a continuation of.
• Hijitus ran as "Super Ben".
• Elinor Wonders Why became Yotsim Lachkor im Elinor (Going Out to Explore with Elinor).
• Ready Jet Go! became היכון הכן טוס! (Ready Set Fly!)
• Let's Go Luna! became קדימה לונה (Come On Luna).
• Dead End: Paranormal Park became דד אנד: שומרי הבית הרדוף (Dead End: The Haunted House Guards).
• Total Drama became אי-שרדות, a combination of the Hebrew words for "Island" and "Survival", which also sound like "Unsurvival". It's also a jab at the Hebrew name of Survivor, one of the shows Total Drama parodies
  • Total DramaRama became ''Unsurvival: Troublemakers'.
