Suicide Squad is a 2019 ongoing comic book series published by DC Comics. Written by Tom Taylor with art by Bruno Redondo, the comic ran from 2019 until 2021.

The Suicide Squad is sent to deal with a team of international Metahuman revolutionaries, but in the battle that ensues, the survivors are all forcibly drafted into a new iteration of the squad. While all of this is happening, the squad must also deal with a new leader, who has ousted Amanda Waller from the position.

Suicide Squad (2019) provides examples of:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: When Magpie's killed by Thylacine, both Deadshot and Harley Quinn express sadness at her death.
  • Alliterative Name: Jog name is revealed to be this when he was at the morgue.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The Aerie is Non-binary and looks androgynous.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Ted Kord seems to have become a villain himself... but it turns out it was Black Mask impersonating him.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Zebra-Man, even though his powers aren't related to zebras. He does admits he does like zebras, however.
  • Artificial Limbs: Osita's left arm is mechanical. It can apparently be hijacked.
  • Ascended Extra: Of all the Zebra-Men that have debuted, the Zebra-Man who joined the Suicide Squad has had the largest role.
  • Badass Normal: Chaos Kitten is so far the only member of the Revolutionaries who hasn't shown any powers or special abilities.
  • Bad Boss: You think Waller is bad, Lok is worse, electrocuting Lawton with a cattle prod for no reason other than questioning his orders, electrocuting them again for not doing the things he ordered exactly like he wanted and so on.
  • Bash Brothers: Fin is this with his brother Scale.
  • Battle Couple: Aerie and Wink, as Wink's teleporting complements Aerie's flight.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Deadshot's beard has grown longer and more unkempt, showing his general disillusionment with working for the Squad.
  • Braids of Action: Osita has her hair arranged in a longish braid.
  • Brawn Hilda: Osita's a big, muscular not particularly attractive woman.
  • The Bully: Lok's even called a one-dimensional bully by Jog.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Lok makes the team go all the way to Australia to capture Captain Boomerang...only to order Lawton, who considers Boomerang an actual friend to shoot him in the head or Lok and his men will start detonating the Squad's bombs one by one. Lawton instead shoots Zebra-Man in the shoulder to take down Lok's force-field and then shoots Lok in the head.
  • Butch Lesbian: Osita's at least more masculine than her late wife.
  • Came Back Strong: After dying, Jog reawakens at a morgue, greeted by his father the Black Racer, now he can use his speed without exhaustion, probably matching the Flash.
  • Captain Ethnic: Thylacine's Australian, possibly Aboriginal, with supernatural senses and whose codename is an extinct marsupial.
  • A Death in the Limelight: The issue which shows Jog's backstory and POV is the one were he dies.
  • Delinquent Hair: Wink has blonde hair dyed pink in a mohawk.
  • Delinquent Hair: Zebra-Men has a mohawk that brings to mind a zebra's mane.
  • Deus ex Machina: Jog reviving, being Black Racer's son and running just in time to save The Revolutionaries from death screams of this.
  • The Dragon: Lok's revealed to be this to Ted Kord of all people.
  • Elite Mooks: Zebra-Man becomes Lok's bodyguard.
  • Fangirl: Wink's brief team-up with the Flash reveals she's a big fan of the Scarlet Speedster.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Knowing he failed to take the detonator off his explosive, Jog remains calm and tells Osita to chase down those who control them before dying.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: The 2019 run has Ted Kord apparently has undergone one, as he is revealed to be Lok's equally sadistic boss. Subverted, it was Black Mask impersonating him with holographic technology.
  • Fish People: Fin and Scale are Atlanteans that look fish-like.
  • Forced to Watch: The Shark chewed Scale in half in front of Fin without being able to intervene.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: No member of the Suicide Squad is impressed by Cavalier, and when he dies, they don't care. At least Harley doesn't.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Lok is missing his right ear and has burn scars on the right side of his face, as if he was caught in an explosion at some point.
  • Hate Sink: Lok's just there to be an a-hole to the Suicide Squad, no backstory or sympathetic qualities for him.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Chaos Kitten is a anti-Hero for sure, but when she finds a dog at the clinic of a Back-Alley Doctor, she insists on taking it with them, and then she leaves it in Deadshot's care (who by that point had fulfilled his sentence and was free to go).
  • Heroes Love Dogs: When Deadshot gets her a dog he found on a back-alley clinic at Gotham, Zoe immediately takes a liking to it and names it Dogshot.
  • Ironic Fear: Aerie is a winged person afraid of flying on an airplane.
  • Irony: Jog considers it ironic that he, someone who hates running after being forced to flee so many times in his life, has speed-related powers.
  • It's Personal: Fin vows to kill The Shark for killing Scale.
  • Lamarck Was Right: While Zoe Lawton might lack her father's training and willingness to kill, she sure inherited his aim.
  • The Leader: Osita is the leader of the revolutionaries.
  • Living Lie Detector: Thylacine hearing is so good she can easily identify when someone is lying.
  • The Lost Lenore: Osita's wife Tonia.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: The president of a nation the Squad was sent to assassinate is Aerie's mother, which the Squad minus Deadshot knew about.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Lok answers to Ted Kord, or rather, the man impersonating Ted.
  • Mauve Shirt: Besides Harley and Deadshot, Zebra-Man is the only member that wasn't part of the Revolutionaries before they went rogue.
  • Meaningful Name: Osita's codename means "Little She-Bear" in Spanish.
  • Mellow Fellow: Because of Jog's powers, he's rather laid back. He's not even that shocked to find out the Black Racer is his father.
  • Morton's Fork: Either they complete 50 Suicide Squad missions and gain their freedom, or they spend the rest of their lives imprisoned. They actually expected that, joining the Squad to stop whoever is behind Lok.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Osita deeply cares for her team, being remorseful any time one of them ends up dying.
  • Multinational Team: They come from many different nations. Osita is from Puerto Rico, Chaos Kitten from Hong Kong, Thylacine from Australia, Wink is American, Deadly Six from Somalia and so on.
  • No Name Given: Zebra-Man's real name is never revealed.
  • Offing the Annoyance: Not really offing, but annoyed at Harley Are We There Yet? antics, Wink teleports her to the middle of the outback for several minutes. Apparently there were too many emus.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Fin kills The Shark by injuring him underwater and letting him be eaten by a swarm of sharks, not only to separate him from his telepathic link, but as revenge for his brother.
  • Psychic Link: Fin and Scale shared one, and once Scale dies, Fin can't help but feel half-empty. Fin can also extend the mental link to others in order to have private conversations.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Zebra-Man doesn't seem to enjoy protecting someone as disgusting as Lok, but has little choice in the matter thanks to being part of the Squad.
  • The Quiet One: Zebra-Man is not particularly talkative.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Jog stands out for not having them, needing lots of rest and food to be able to use his powers, and only for short periods of times.
  • Retirony: After finally completing his sentence and deciding to be a better father for his daughter, he gets killed by Black Mask pretending to be Blue Beetle.
  • Scary Black Woman: Unlike Deadly Six who is at least civil, Thylacine can be pretty intimidating. Best shown when she kills Magpie.
  • Selective Magnetism: Zebra-Man can manipulate magnetic force-fields, which is what gives them the power to create barriers.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Deadly Six can use the device on his chest to inflict his targets with one of the seven deadly sins, although he says he wouldn't want to weaponize Lust.
  • Smug Snake: Lok likes to act as if he can make the Suicide Squad function much better than Waller, but its clear very soon he's just a short tempered psychopath who is not as smart as he thinks. He doesn't even know the Revolutionaries let themselves be drafted into the Suicide Squad to screw over the plans of whoever is calling the shots for him.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Aerie can apparently communicate with birds.
  • Sticky Fingers: Wink mentions she's kleptomaniac.
  • Super-Senses: This is Thylacine's apparent power.
  • Super-Speed: Jog has this power, although unlike other speedsters, he can only use them in short bursts. He does have the Healing Factor of other speedsters, which allow him to mostly heal from an explosion that nearly charred his face in a matter of hours.
  • Super-Strength: Osita's mechanical arm is so strong it punched Cavalier's head like a watermelon.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Fin is forced to work alongside The Shark, who ate his brother.
    • Unsurprisingly, neither Lawton nor Harley like the idea of working with a group of people that killed two of their own, and the feeling is mutual.
  • Teleportation: Wink can teleport herself and others. Her limits haven't been explored.
  • There Are No Good Executives: Ted Kord, who usually averts this, seems to be playing this straight. It turns out that he's being impersonated by Black Mask, who is making every effort to milk any goodwill Ted had ever earned.
  • This Is Going to Suck: Magpie can't help but point out how out of her depth she is.
  • Those Two Guys: Chaos Kitten is usually seen with Thylacine.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: The 2019 run begins with Waller being fired with no explanation and replaced with a sadistic bully named Lok. Osita later claims that Task Force X had secretly been hijacked behind the scenes from the U.S. Government into serving other interests.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Scale and T.N.Teen are both killed in their first appearance.
  • Wham Shot: In Issue #5 of the 2019 run, Osita demands a goon put her in touch with who Lok reports to. He puts her on a video call...with Ted Kord.
  • Winged Humanoid: Aerie has blue-colored wings that allow them to fly.
  • You Killed My Father: Osita wants to get to Captain Boomerang for killing her wife Tonia with one of his boomerangs.
  • Your Head Asplode: Cavalier gets his head punched off by Osita.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: They go after corrupt politicians and military contractors.
