The protagonists and "heroes" of the series.

    Yusuke Urameshi

The Protagonist and "hero" of the story. He acts as spirit detective for Koenma though not by choice.

  • Blood Knight: Unlike his manga counterpart who was more of a Spirited Competitor and usually just likes having friendly matches or only fights when he needs to this version of Yusuke fights for the sake of fighting and enjoys hurting people.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Yusuke when given the opportunity will always put down other members of the cast when they irritate him. A couple of priceless gems are:
    • When a demon expressed frustration that Yusuke wasn't scared of him, commenting that he had mouths on his hands only for Yusuke to nonchalantly make the observation that while the mouths on his hands may make his "nightly ritual" fantastic, they did not make the demon scary.
    • Yusuke commenting that being on all fours was a good look for Botan while she was looking for the portal to demon city.
    • Asking Kuwabara, who just mention he had just lost his boner at second fastest speed, if he got it back again after Kuwabara reacted with suprise when Imaki showed up to attack them.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Yusuke is very violent and really doesn't care about the suffering of others or the potential death toll of events he is involved in either directly or indirectly. That said most of his sociopathic tendencies are played for laughs and often given a justification depending on the situation.
  • Hypocritical Heart Warming: As Yusuke said to Rando while kicking his ass, " That was for Kuwabara. Nobody breaks his bones but me."
  • Nominal Hero: Doesn't really want to be a spirit detective and is only doing the job because he's being forced by Koenma.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: While Yusuke doesn't want to be involved with the spirit world or the jobs Koenma gives him, when he needs to, he can make the right choice.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In this version Yusuke doesn't even hesitate or bother to check in Miyuki is a woman or not. It's also made even more clear later as this version of Yusuke doesn't even say he might have gone easier on a girl.
Kuwabara: Yurameshi! You can't hit a girl!
Yusuke: Sure I can. Watch.(punches Miyuki in the Tata.)
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Kuwabara.

    Kazuma Kuwabara
The group's resident Butt-Monkey.
  • Butt-Monkey: Though he does occasionally contribute to fights, his main role is to made fun of and get snarked at by the other three.
  • Dumb Muscle: While he's not particularly stupid, he is a bit dumber than the rest of the team, something which they won't hesitate to snark at him for.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He does this twice with Byakko, with the second time resulting in a completely avoidable fight.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Yusuke.

    Kurama
Former thief and The Smart Guy.

  • Deadpan Snarker: Kurama is always deadpan and often snarky.
(in response to Genbu's voice echoing around the room)
Kurama: Great. Now I have retard in surround sound.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Isn't above dropping the F-Bomb
(In response to Genbu always saying "Get-er-done")
    Kurama: Get-er-done Mother-F*&ker.

    Hiei
The group's Anti-Hero after Yusuke defeats him in battle.

  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": Says Kuwabara could make a "meatshield" against the Saint Beasts.
  • Deadpan Snarker: As the team member with the least patience for idiocy, he's easily the snarkiest of the group.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Yusuke says this to him when they first meet.
Yusuke: That's Hiei? He's like 4 foot nothing.
    Botan: Without his hair.
Hiei: Haven't you ever heard the phrase size doesn't matter?
Yusuke: That's just what girlfriends tell their boyfriends who have really small—
    Botan: Yusuke!
  • Hell Is That Noise: Says this right before he's crushed by a giant boulder. In the original he actually moves out of the way in time.
  • Insult Backfire: After making several potshots at Kuwabara's fighting ability that fly right over his head, Hiei has to tell him outright that he's insulting him.
  • Warrior Poet: Used to have a show on DTV called "Poems With Hiei". He seems to have a preference for haiku.

Supporting Characters

    Botan

    Koenma
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He mistakes a window for a TV stuck on a single channel. When informed otherwise, he assumes "Window" is the brand name of the TV.
  • Skewed Priorities: He's more interested in watching TV and playing video games than actually doing his job.
  • Totally Radical: He can barely go a single sentence without saying "dude" or "man".

    Yukina

    Genkai

    Keiko
  • Mad Love: She's completely incapable of comprehending that Yusuke can't stand her. When he tells her outright how much he dislikes her, somewhere between her ears and her brain his ranting morphs into romantic descriptions of how much he loves her.

    Atsuko
