Jim Hawkins

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a3a3d5d6_3170_4225_ab30_6e6d4e2a1567.jpeg

Our protagonist, a young man who begins the story working at his mother's inn, the Admiral Benbow. His life gets flipped on its head when he ends up in possession of a map leading to Captain Flint's treasure.

Billy Bones

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/19ac6c3c_bbde_460f_bd73_821f1cdaeee3.jpeg

A member of Captain Flint's crew. He killed Captain Flint and took his treasure map, and his possession of it is what brings the rest of Flint's crew to the Admiral Benbow.

  • The Alcoholic: Always asking for more rum. It ends up spelling his death later.
  • Oh, Crap!: Gets a shocked expression on his face when he sees Pew show up to the Admiral Benbow. Both because he knows what Pew is capable of, and because what his presence at the inn means for Billy.
  • Running Gag: Every time he sneezes, something gets broken.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Immediately after being told by Dr. Livesey that he'll die if he drinks any more alcohol, he immediately begins searching around the inn for more rum. Naturally, once he finds a bottle that hasn't been emptied, he takes a big swig from it, sneezes, and drops dead as a door nail.

Doctor Livesey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/livesey.jpg

A man with subpar bedside manner, but still ahead of his time when it comes to things like knowing the dangers of smoking. He joins the Hispaniola crew and faces all the dangers ahead with a laugh and a smile.

  • Anti-Alcohol Aesop:
Dr. Livesey: The words "rum" and "death" should mean the same to you. Understand?
  • The Big Guy: The tallest of the group of heroes (barring a few Off-Model moments), and he along with Jim is a capable fighter.
  • Brutal Honesty: Isn't afraid to tell people how he truly feels about a situation. Best shown in his introduction, where he calls Billy "a waste of life" while carrying him to bed, then cheerfully tells him that he'll die if he drinks any more rum.
  • Combat Medic: It's not stated here if he was part of the Battle of Fontenoy, but either way he's able to defeat three pirates with a rapier, and he's shown to switch over to his non-dominant hand before attacking, showing that he doesn't feel the need to give it his all in order to beat them.
  • Dissonant Serenity: It really can't be stated enough, almost nothing can make this man stop smiling and laughing, whether it's telling a patient that he's quite close to death, or happily explaining that he and his friends are outnumbered by vicious pirates 5 to 1.
  • Establishing Character Moment: After Billy has a stroke, Jim calls for a doctor. As if on cue, Dr. Livesey shows up, carries Billy to bed while calling him worthless, snickers while he describes the old pirate's symptoms, tells him that he'll die if he drinks any more rum, and leaves with just as much fanfare. And the whole time, he's giggling, laughing, and smiling.
  • Heroic Build: A tall, broad-shouldered, barrel-chested man who is a brave and competent fighter firmly on the side of good.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Very rarely stops grinning, and it mostly happens whenever John Silver is being manipulative.
  • Perpetual Smiler: His voice actor once described his character as "a grin of 33 teeth".

Blind Pew

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blind_pew.jpeg

A member of Captain Flint's crew. Crafty and dangerous, in spite of his disability. He's the one who delivers the Black Spot to Billy Bones, which kicks off the main plot.

  • Badass Boast: When he's delivering the Black Spot to Billy, he says the following.
Pew: Don't worry Billy, stay where you are. I can't see you, but I can hear your fingers trembling.
  • Death Glare: Amazingly, he manages to give one, despite being blind. When the dwarf member of his pirates tries to tell him they got some treasure off of Bones, Pew gets in the man's face with the impression of one.
  • Disabled Badass: Despite his missing sight, he's a dangerous and cut throat pirate. He even weaves it into his Badass Boast.
  • Undignified Death: His book-counterpart getting fatally trampled by horses was already pretty bad, but the cartoon takes it to a whole other farcical level by having him fall headfirst into a barrel, which rolls down a hill, careens over the edge of a cliff, and sends Pew to a watery grave.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Threatens to break Jim's arm if he doesn't lead him to where Billy Bones is staying.

Squire Trelawney

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/99977ad6_076c_4a7f_b70c_da40928b091f.jpeg

A heavyset English noble. He's the one who funds the entire expedition for Flint's Treasure. Nice as he is, he's a tad slow on the uptake.

  • Cannot Keep a Secret: He really can't. Doctor Livesey even lampshades it during Trelawney's introduction:
Livesey: Trelawney, I can go with you. However, there is one person in this affair that I find unreliable.
Trelawney: Who? Pray tell me the name of that scoundrel.
Livesey: You, Trelawney! You do not know how to keep your mouth shut.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Although he's normally The Load, he took down more pirates than any other member of his crew. Granted, it was with a trick: he made a fake storefront for a liquor store and tricked a horde of pirates into diving through the door... and off a cliff. But it does demonstrate a certain degree of guile.

Captain Smollett

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bcbfaa1c_e8f8_4b7e_9ead_4ec5838f065f.jpeg

The captain of the ship. A diminutive yet boisterous man who's afraid of nothing.

  • Brutal Honesty: Smollett's dossier says that he "likes to tell the truth in the eye, and suffers for it".
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Smollett's not as much dumbed down in the adaptation as it would seem, and retains most of his dialogue from the book, only with his temper greatly exaggerated. It's just a lot of unfortunate stuff tends to happen to him, especially in action scenes. However, he's cartoonishly tough and just brushes all of it off, suffering a messed wig at most.
  • Speech Impediment: Overemphasizes his "s"'s and "p"'s, spraying spit with every sentence.

Long John Silver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4a2d321c_4bf5_4aeb_9673_e98930b3ee8f.jpeg

Leader of the mutinous pirates. This silver tongued liar wants Flint's treasure, and he'll do anything to get it.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: While most of the characters take certain personality traits that were already present and exaggerate them to comedic levels, John Silver's personality stands out for being almost the entire opposite of his book counterpart, as well as most other adaptations. In the book, Silver was Affably Evil, being charming, boisterous, seemed to genuinely like Jim, and was likeable enough that despite everything he put Jim through, the latter still ended up wishing him well after his escape (albeit since he thinks Silver won't have a happy afterlife). Here, while Silver keeps Jim alive, it comes across as more of a pragmatic decision than something borne from genuine fondness for the boy, and he never raises his voice, even when threatening others with violence.
  • Badass Boast: Gets two:
    • First, after his attempt to get the treasure map from the team peacefully fails, he leaves with this parting shot.
Silver: In one hour those of you who are still alive will envy, hehe, (voice drops demonically deep) the dead.
    • And later, when his crew wants to kill Jim for ruining their plans, he convinces them to back off with the following challenge.
Silver: Gentlemen... Anyone who wants to deal with me can step forward. Take a cutlass, him that dares. (pops out a switchblade And I'll see the color of his inside, crutch and all, before that pipe's empty.
  • Disabled Badass: Despite missing a leg, he's still plenty intimidating.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Noticeably paler than every other character (except probably Trelawney) in the film and has jet-black hair.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Murderous pirate though he may be, he won't let any harm come to Jim. When his mutinous crew tries, he makes it plenty clear that he'll kill any pirate who wants to challenge his authority on this (see Badass Boast).
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Courtesy of Armen Dzhigarkhanyan.
  • Intimidation Demonstration: Tends to punctuate his threats with a demonstration to show he’s not messing around. When he threatens the barricaded heroes at the fort, he blows a smoke cloud out of his pipe that takes the form of a skull. And later, when he threatens to kill any crew member who hurts Jim, he pops out a switchblade, sharpens it on John's suspenders, and cuts half his mustache off in one clean swipe.
  • Verbal Tic: He sometimes interrupts himself with a soft, menacing chuckle accompanied by a sudden and somewhat goofy grin.
