Ultra People

A race of intelligent Human Aliens from the Planet U40, who's culture is similar to the Ancient Greece, down to wearing Himation and Toga. A long time ago, the U40 residents were advanced beings who wished to expand their race further to the outer space. Earth was one of the stars they visited and established the very first human civilization with Neanderthals. To combat any extraterrestrial threats that harm the safety of their planet, they created the Ultra Mind energy source that transform them into Ultra Warriors, now calling themselves as Ultra Humanoids.

When the Earth was plagued by mysterious phenomenon, the Ultras sent their message and strongest warrior Joneus to guard the planet from monster attacks.

    As a whole

Background U40 people are voiced by: Takeshi Aono, Norio Wakamoto

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Subverted. The Ultras of U40 are originally humans and their Ultra forms are their combat forms, but as stated by Amia, both are equally their true forms. They only choose to assume as humans during peace time and when communicating with mankind.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Planetary example; the U40 Ultras were banished from their own home planet when Heller and his armies invaded it as revenge for their initial banishment during 10,000 years prior to the series.
  • Alternate Universe: Or rather, alternate planet. These Ultras came from Planet U40, making them as departures from the real life Ultras as neither from the Land of Light nor Planet L77.
  • Been There, Shaped History: The people of U40 are largely responsible for the modernization of mankind after coming in contact with the Neanderthals in the distant past. Because of this, mankind itself are implied to be descendants to the people of U40.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: The residents of U40 shouted "Ultra Change"! prior to transforming into their Ultra forms, although this only applied to those with the Star Symbols.
  • Human Aliens: The U40 Ultras are originally this, and they are even implied to be mankind's descendants due to their established contact with Neanderthals in the distant past. Although obtaining the ability to transform into Ultra, their human forms are still their true forms at that.
  • La Résistance: The remaining U40 Ultras banded together to form a resistance team when their home world were taken over by Heller's army. The Science Guard Party join them in order to put Heller's invasion on Earth to a definitive end.
  • Light Is Good: In addition to red, the U40 race also has the white coloration to their Ultraman forms. When Joneus gets his own live action suit, the color white was replaced with Land of Light Ultra's silver.
  • Mass Super-Empowering Event: Predating even the Land of Light in Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends, the U40 people are said to originally being human like, but they receive their Ultraman forms under the exposure to the Ultra Mind, an artificial energy source created to counter invaders on their home planet. Unlike their Land of Light counterparts, Amia outright proclaims that both their human and Ultra forms are equally original forms altogether.
  • Red Is Heroic: The entire Ultras of U40 are colored red and white, and are also heroics as long as they maintain their Ultraman forms.
  • Reused Character Design: Other appearing U40 people in their Ultra forms are portrayed as simpler designs of Joneus' appearance.
  • Sizeshifter: Averted. Unlike the Land of Light Ultras, the U40 Ultras are normally human-sized, but the Star Symbol used by the 8 chosen warriors allow them to grow into giant proportions. As Joneus demonstrated, by absorbing enough sunlight, he can grow to the maximum height of 120 meters.
  • Transformation Trinket: The entirety of U40 Ultras transform via the use of Beam Flasher, a star-like pendant by placing it on their foreheads. Some of them can naturally warp themselves in their Ultra forms.
  • Underground City: The U40 people resides in a massive and civilized underground city, while the ground surface appear as an ancient Rome-like landscape.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: The elders of U40 said this, including that life and death is a normal cycle when Heller proposes the Ultra Mind's power to be used with immortality.

The main Ultra of this anime series, Joneus is the leader of the great 8 Ultra Warriors and the strongest among his race. He was sent to Earth by the Great Sage to defend Earth from monster and alien attacks while bonding himself to Choichiro Hikari, a young man who was on his trip back to Earth.

  • Art Evolution: In the series, Joneus' color is mainly red and white as a contrast to the M78 universe Ultras' silver. When he guest appeared in the 1979 live action film Ultraman: Great Monster Decisive Battle, Joneus was adapted into a suit, where his white color was render silver to be in line with the M78 Ultras.
  • The Chooser of the One: He chooses Hikari as his human host to operate on Earth. Out of all people, Hikari is due to his selflessness act that only Joneus witnessed at some point prior to the series.
  • The Chosen One: Joneus, Elek, Loto and other great 5 were chosen by the Great Sage as 8 warriors tasked in fighting for the peace of the universe, while Joneus was the only one to be sent down to Earth to defend mankind.
  • Combination Attack: Joneus can combine his beam with the other 7 great warriors, used once to destroy the Baladon's saucer during their escape from Earth.
  • Critical Annoyance: Like the Land of Light Ultras, Joneus' Star Symbol (his equivalent of Color Timer) measures him time limit on Earth for only 4 minutes. Its original color is green, and when its low in energy, it briefly changes to yellow before blinking in red color.
  • Disney Death: Both him and Hikari were killed by Bedorun in episode 19, forcing Elek to bring their body to U40 for revival and recuperation.
  • Finishing Move: Planium Beam. He can either perform it in a), shooting a ball of light, or b), firing a standard beam attack.
  • Forehead Beam: Astro Spot, perhaps as a nod to Ultraseven's Emerium Ray.
  • Healing Hands: Through Hikari, Joneus can donate a portion of his energy to heal another Ultra, in the case of episode 31, his little sister, Amia. Unfortunately doing so drained a lot of energy, and Joneus barely had enough energy left to fight by the time he transformed.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: Like all U40 Ultras, Joneus has a human form, but the first glimpse we ever get was shrouded in episode 21. He chooses to do so to keep his bond with Hikari, only revealing it once they are properly severed. He reveals his form in the very final episode when Heller was defeated once and for all, and at one point staying on Earth for a while to watch over mankind rebuilding their civilizations after the Heller Army's intense attack.
  • In-Series Nickname: According to Joneus in episode 21, he is also called as J (Joe/Jo) by his people, which is a short for his real name.
  • I Shall Return: After temporarily staying on Earth to oversee mankind's reconsruction of their civilizations, Joneus bids farewell to Hikari and the Science Guard Party, swearing that he will return at the time Earth needs him again, and perhaps, taking in a new human host if that is the case.
  • Mighty Glacier: Is the strongest of the warriors of U40 and has a muscular body built, both in human form and even as an Ultra.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Prior to episode 20, he is only called as "Ultraman" by humankind, as they have no idea to who he is (hence the series is called as The Ultraman). Joneus reveals it in episode 21, and even insisted to use mankind's name, thus combining into "Ultraman Joneus".
  • Sharing a Body: An interesting case is that Hikari was never in a life-threatening situation that forced Joneus to combine with him. Joneus pick the young man because of his selflessness and sincerity to protect others.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His name is written as Joneus in official romanizations, but pronounced as "Jonias".
  • Strong and Skilled: Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy shows that in addition to his strength, Joneus is skilled enough to force Absolute Tartarus to retreat from a one-on-one fight, with Tartarus in turn being skilled enough to pick apart Ultimate Shining Ultraman Zero's fighting style.
  • World's Strongest Man: Joneus is the strongest warrior that U40 ever had, hence why he was sent to Earth to protect its people.

The second Ultra to appear in the series, way back in episode 19. He was the one who was summoned to Earth by Joneus and picked him and Hikari after the two had died from fighting Bedorun. Alongside Loto and the other great 5, Elek is also one of the great 8 warriors chosen by the Great Sage as warriors of U40. After the war with Badel Tribe, Elek and Loto occasionally appear on Earth to assist Joneus in his fight against invaders, eventually joining the other U40 remnants as members of La Résistance to reclaim the Planet U40 when it was taken over by Heller.

  • Barrier Warrior: Elek Barrier.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Starting from episode 27 and so on, Elek and Loto (sometimes with the other five warriors too) will descend to Earth to assist Joneus in fighting against monsters and alien invaders.
  • The Chosen One: Like Joneus, Elek is one of the 8 chosen warriors to be given the Star Symbol, allowing him to grow into giant proportions and fight giant monsters.
  • Combination Attack: Elek can combine his beam with the other 7 great warriors, used once to destroy the Baladon's saucer during their escape from Earth. Without Joneus, he and the other six can form a protective barrier around the Ultra Mind to prevent it from being exploited by other outside forces.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: He was too late to even assist Joneus in fighting against Bedorun and was only carrying his and Hikari's lifeless body, promising the Science Guard Party that he will restore them back to life.
  • Dub Name Change: Maral in the English dub.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Joneus was the only one with a Star Symbol that allows him to grow in size and operate in another universe, something that Elek, Loto and the other great 5 lacked despite their similar ability to grow large. They later receive their Star Symbol as of episode 29.
  • Finishing Move: Elekrium Beam.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: His hair color is blonde as a human, and Elek is one of the heroic Ultras alongside Joneus.
  • The Leader: When U40 was invaded by Heller, both him and Loto are the ones leading the remaining refugees of their planet to form the U Fleet.
  • Those Two Guys: Hardly ever seen without Loto, though his debut appearance was him alone in the U40 saucer.

The third Ultra to appear in the series, starting in episode 20. Alongside Elek and the other great 5, Loto is also one of the great 8 warriors chosen by the Great Sage as warriors of U40. After the war with Badel Tribe, Loto and Elek occasionally appear on Earth to assist Joneus in his fight against invaders, eventually joining the other U40 remnants as members of La Résistance to reclaim the Planet U40 when it was taken over by Heller.

Without Joneus, he and the other six can form a protective barrier around the Ultra Mind to prevent it from being exploited by other outside forces.
  • Dub Name Change: Jedal in the English dub.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Joneus was the only one with a Star Symbol that allows him to grow in size and operate in another universe, something that Elek, Loto and the other great 5 lacked despite their similar ability to grow large. They later receive their Star Symbol as of episode 29.
  • Finishing Move: Lotolaria Beam.
  • The Leader: When U40 was invaded by Heller, both him and Elek are the ones leading the remaining refugees of their planet to form the U Fleet.

Joneus' little sister, who was responsible for tending Hikari after his injury from fighting Bedorun on Earth. After their moment in fighting against the Bader Tribe, Amia becomes smitten to Hikari.

  • Badass Cape: Her Ultra form wears one as a unique distinction amongst her kin.
  • Damsel in Distress: She was kidnapped by Roygar and held captive under Heller in the last two episodes of the series.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: She slips into Earth by dressing as one of the many soldiers of Heller Army to warn the Science Guard Party about Heller's full scale attack on Earth.
  • Dub Name Change: Anya in the English dub.
  • Dude Magnet: She easily attracted Marume's attention, including Pig and Uruk.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: She is as beautiful as Mutsumi, with her blonde hair even complementing it.
  • Finishing Move: Amiassher, her beam attack in episode 31.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Amia tended Hikari's injuries after his death on Earth. Combined with the two fighting against Bader group together causes her to become smitten to him. It gets to the point where she snuck away into Earth and merge with an Earthling just for the sake of reuniting with Hikari.
  • Grand Theft Me: Unlike Joneus, who peacefully coexists with Hikari through Sharing a Body, Amia possessed an ill girl named Kyoko Kodaka in order to meet Hikari again on Earth. Her method is visibly shown suppressing Kodaka's consciousness.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Like Elek, her hair is blonde, and is also one of the good guys.
  • Identical Stranger: Amia's human form has an identical doppelganger on Earth, an ill girl at that. She fuses with said girl in order to reunite with Hikari.
  • Innate Night Vision: In her Ultra form, she can see in the dark.
  • Reused Character Design: As both series were animated by Sunrise, Amia is visually identical to Yuki Mori of Space Battleship Yamato.
  • The Unchosen One: Amia was never one of the great 8, but she stole one of their Star Symbols in order to go after Hikari on Earth. She returned it back ever since.

    Great Sage

Great Sage

Voiced by: Kohei Miyauchi

The ruling figure of U40's citizen and its society.

  • Big Good: In addition to be the ruling figure of his planet, he is also an embodiment of this trope.
  • The Chooser of the One: He was responsible for choosing Joneus and seven other warriors to be elected as U40's protectors.
  • Distressed Dude: He was captured by Heller and imprisoned in a diskette. Amia freed him in the final episode before Heller's own demise.
  • Expy: Almost an embodiment of Ultraman King due to their old age and beard. Whereas King is naturally an Ultra in his appearance, the Great Sage stays in human form for the rest of the series and is a Non-Action Guy.
  • So Proud of You: Says this to Hikari and the Science Guard Party in gratitude for their participation in liberating Planet U40 from Heller's grip.

    The great 5 warriors
The other five chosen warriors of Planet U40 aside from Joneus, Elek and Loto.
  • All There in the Manual: Two of these unnamed warriors are at least named Noa and Miguel in the script of episode 20.
  • The Chosen One: Like Joneus, the rest of the great five are chosen by the Great Sage as warriors of U40.
  • Combination Attack: They can combine their beams with Joneus, Elek and Loto, used once to destroy the Baladon's saucer during their escape from Earth. Without Joneus, the team can form a protective barrier around the Ultra Mind to prevent it from being exploited by other outside forces.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Joneus was the only one with a Star Symbol that allows him to grow in size and operate in another universe, something that Elek, Loto and the other great 5 lacked despite their similar ability to grow large. They later receive their Star Symbol as of episode 29.
  • Finishing Move: Ultra Warrior Hand Beam and Ultra Super Laser, the latter being a combination attack.
  • No Name Given: They barely had any interactions, nor their own names in the anime. At least one of them was named Melg in episode 21. According to the script of episode 20, two of them are named Noa and Miguel.
  • Satellite Character: They are only seen together only if Elek and Loto weren't enough to support Joneus.

    Zamius

Zamius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zamius.jpg

Voiced by: Osamu Kato

The commander of U40 Fleet in their campaign against the Badel Tribe. His only appearance was in episode 21.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He has a son named Matia in the voice drama, who died in the final fight against Heller Empire.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He was only seen leading the U40 combat fleets in against the Badel Tribe in the anime. But the voice drama of Ultraman Taiga establishes that he is the adopted father of Titas, thus is partly responsible for shaping Titas into a Humble Hero despite his origin as the son of Heller's followers.
