Star Warriors:

    Anthrax

Anthrax

Eternity is a long time, long enough for some to develop regret.

A rat Star Warrior who serves the council of Polaris and aids in emergencies on missions.

  • Blunt "No": Expect this to be his answer to any suggestion of him using his size to squeeze through tight spaces.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Hardly the meanest character around, but Anthrax is still among the more outwardly rule-abiding of Polaris' warriors, and doesn't take kindly to unnecessary risks on his missions. How much of that is due to trauma from Savra obliterating his friend is unclear, but the answer is definitely not 'none'.
  • Sparing the Aces: He averts this on Ezzy's behalf when he slices up the dark matter creature she'd broken through to and was in the process of saving.

We have to tend the crops by getting rid of the weeds. Otherwise the whole crop goes bad.

A human Star Warrior, and Ezmeralda's partner on her first mission.

    Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia

A human Star Warrior who was once on the council of Polaris before she stole from the armory and was banished.

  • Ambiguous Criminal History: She was banished from Polaris after stealing unspecified items from Polaris' armory, similar to Skepsi.
  • Broken Pedestal: She was seen as a mentor figure among Polaris' council in the period when Savra was shirking his duties; her vouch for Stella Major pretty much singlehandedly assured the latter's appointment as the new captain. In the present, Sylvain still seems to not have gotten over her betrayal.
  • One-Shot Character: She is only briefly mentioned (and seen) in one flashback in Chapter 5, while Sylvain and Anthrax are discussing how Stella Major came to be the captain of Polaris.

...leaving my family behind. Is this REALLY worth such a high cost?

Originally an ordinary fox kit named Emmy Aister. She was killed by a hunter and recruited to be a Star Warrior due to the bravery of a wish she'd made to protect her family.

  • An Arm and a Leg: The hunter's shot that claims her life rips her right foreleg completely off her body. The injury comes with her when she's recruited to the Star Warriors, but it's replaced with a bionic cannon weapon.
  • Anthropomorphic Shift: Having lost her arm when she was shot, Stella Major opts to change Ezzy from a quadrupedal fox into an anthropomorphic one — though she likely would have done that anyway, since such a form is better for conducting the work of a Star Warrior.
  • Arm Cannon: She's given one to replace the arm she lost when she was killed.
  • Audience Surrogate: Being wholly new to the very concept of Star Warriors, Ezzy is the target of much exposition that serves to flesh out the world around her. Her tendency to fluctuate between light and dark is also sure to resonate with readers who have struggled with life choices.
  • Elemental Powers: As with all Star Warriors, she is assigned an element and given associated abilities — specifically, Lightning.
  • Passion Is Evil: Her very first mission almost ends in failure because it happens to involve the human hunter who killed her. Her hatred, and refusal to help him in spite of it, almost causes his wish (and her) to become dark.
  • Two First Names: 'Aister' is not a surname; it's the name of her mother.
  • You Killed My Father: Initially she's content to deny Clyde his wish, against the rules of the Star Warriors as that is already. But while listening in on him and his infant son, she learns that he also hunted — and skinned — her mother. She immediately goes dark, and were it not for a memory of her mother, Ezzy would have killed both Clyde and Coby right then and there.

There are no "useless" wishes...The only wishes we have to be careful about are those created with cruel intent in mind.

Emmy's mother, recruited as a Star Warrior after Clyde killed and skinned her. She had a mysterious relationship with humans.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Her Death Mark covered her entire body before she used stardust to repair much of it. Death Marks symbolize where the Star Warrior was injured or in pain while they died. She was skinned for her fur. Feel free to connect the dots...
  • Death by Origin Story: The comic's first interlude is dedicated to her romance with Ares, their founding of a fox pack together, and her eventual death by skinning after a meeting with humans.
  • Face Death with Dignity: She knew of the humans' hunting competition ahead of time, and mysteriously seemed resigned to getting caught up on it, choosing to warn Ares to get himself and Emmy to safety and remember that she loved him.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Her fur is so dazzlingly golden that Clyde is confident the profit from selling it can support his infant son for years. It singlehandedly causes Ares to fall in love with her at first sight.
  • I Have Many Names: She was known as Aister when she was alive, and was given the name Doradis after being recruited — she chose the name Miracle when Ezmeralda referred to her as one.
  • Intellectual Animal: She taught the fox pack rudimentary culture based on things she learned from humans; for instance, she gave Ares his name after introducing him to the concept of having one.
  • Noodle Incident: She apparently caused a lot of trouble during her first mission, to the point that even Stella Major is weary of hearing her name.

Knowlege is power, and understanding is seeing.

A cat Star Warrior, Anthrax's once-best friend and mentor figure.

  • Deader than Dead: When he stole a powerful weapon from Polaris' vaults, Savra obliterated him ostensibly to stop the weapon from getting out of control.
  • Death by Origin Story: His obliteration by Savra is the source of most of Anthrax's personal conflict.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: His thirst for knowledge, books especially, is among the fiercest of all the warriors, and is implied to be the base for his friendship with Anthrax.
  • Nice Guy: His kindness towards Anthrax is almost sickeningly sweet, to the point that Anthrax fails to understand it. He doesn't even care that Anthrax killed him, since life as a Star Warrior is so much better.

Deities:

    Savra

Savra

I'm far too busy. Close your mouth.

A lizard Star Warrior who is one of the founders of Polaris. He also served as its captain in ages past.

  • Big Bad: If the comic has one, it's him. His hard-fisted leadership is discussed as being actively harmful to the work of the other warriors.
  • Jerkass: Between disinterest in the affairs of the living people his warriors protect, willingness to brutally punish dissent, and argumentative attitude in general with his peers; Savra is easily the biggest Hate Sink the comic has.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: He oblierated Skepsi when the latter stole a weapon too powerful to control from Polaris. If not outright stated it's heavily implied that this was a kneejerk reaction and Savra could have easily reclaimed the weapon without anyone getting hurt, but simply didn't care to.

    Stella Major

You will not be alone. There are other Star Warriors just like you.

A mysterious divine figure who serves as the main leader/advisor of the Star Warriors, and is responsible for both assigning Emmy to be recruited as one and changing her into an anthropomorphic form.

  • Big Good: She is the central figure of the Star Warriors' leadership.
  • Dramatic Gun Cock: Her scythe audibly clicks when preparing to reap Emmy's soul.
  • God Is Flawed: She isn't omniscient, omnipresent, or any more of a god than any other leader of the Star Warriors like Savra. Still, she is almost universally regarded as their overall leader, and her word in Polaris is effectively law.
  • God Is Good: As far as the Star Warriors go, she is the ultimate force of order and good in the universe, the beacon to which they flock and their rallying banner against dark matter.
  • Light Is Good: She appears to Emmy as a dazzlingly bright figure with no discernable features except for eyes and a mouth.
  • Psychopomp: True to form, when appearing to Emmy she's cloaked in a Grim Reaper's hood and cloak, and wielding a scythe made of light.

Mortals:

    Ares

Ares

...being a leader is a silly wish. I just wish that all of us were free from those humans.

Emmy's father, a loving and caring but dispassionate fox who yields to his brother Corvus on most matters, especially the safety of their family.

  • Despair Event Horizon: He crossed it after Emmy was killed, and willingly gave himself and his memories up to dark matter in hope of finding vengeance. The creature that results takes on his likeness but is distinctly not him.
  • Humans Are Bastards: One of the few things about which Ares shows genuine conviction. It's hard to blame him, since by the beginning of the comic they've hunted his mate and driven the rest of his family from multiple homes.

    Clyde

Clyde

...I'm just too tired. Tired of hunting foxes, tired of this show.

A human hunter responsible for killing Emmy/Ezmeralda and her mother as part of a competition hosted by his brother.

  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Part of his motivation for hunting in the first place is because his brother and the rest of the townsfolk mock him for not wanting to compete and being less of a man than they are.
  • Hand of Death: His gun is seen delivering the killing shot to Emmy at the beginning of Chapter 1, but his face isn't seen until halfway into Chapter 2.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: He plans to use the winnings from the hunting competition to support himself and his infant son, but still remains reluctant the whole way through.

    Corvus

Corvus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2024_02_23_194456955.png
[Emmy] is putting us in danger, just like her mother.

Ares' brother and Emmy's uncle. He's the muscle of their family, domineering and cold - at times downright cruel, all for the sake of keeping Emmy and Ares out of the way of humans.

  • Asshole Victim: Emmy's reaction to finding Corvus dead is one of surprise and fear, but absolutely no sadness.
  • Killed Offscreen: Ezmeralda stumbles across his corpse during her trial. What killed him is uncertain; he may have been part of the competition that also claimed her own life, or he could've been killed by the dark matter creature bearing Ares' memories.
  • Would Hurt a Child: As Corvus is admonishing them both for sneaking out at night, Emmy stands up to him in defense of Ares. Corvus' immediate, unflinching reaction is to claw her across the face, hard. How hard are we talking? The wounds come with her after she dies, as part of her Death Mark.
