     X / Xenophanes / Sonic.exe
The main antagonist of the story. X is a dark matter being that was born in a gap between dimensions. He's the one who steals the souls of those who play the Sonic.exe file.

  • A God Am I: His most famous phrase is "I am God", which is him alluding to the fact that he's nigh-omnipotent inside of his world.
  • And I Must Scream: This is the fate of all of his victims due to him simply taking their souls and placing them in bodies that look like Sonic the Hedgehog characters just so that he could "make them his slaves", as well as killing their "bodies" in gruesome manners.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's psychotic, sadistic, totally devoid of human compassion and sure loves killing.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In-game, X succeeds in killing Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman in Tom's playthrough. In Derek's playthrough, he's killed Shadow and Sally, though Derek refuses to finish the game as Rouge. Outside the game, X has claimed many victims thanks to Shannon Goldman and the Cult of X distributing the game, and will go after anyone else next.
  • Big Bad: X is the demon taking the form of Sonic that, in-game, kills Sonic and his friends, and outside the game kills people in the real world.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy / Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are black with red pupils.
  • Creepy Child: He's a narcissistic and sadistic psychopath who tortures people for fun, yet, he is about 10 years old.
  • Depending on the Writer: After Astranomiconx took ownership of the character, some elements of X's character and backstory were retconned. See here.
  • Eldritch Abomination: According to his official backstory, he was created in the gap between dimensions and originally did not have an appearance resembling Sonic himself, looking more like an amorphous blob of darkness that causes inhuman pain to whoever touches him. He's omnipotent within his home world, to the point where he can make his world seem a lot like Sonic's at first glance just to give his victims a sense of false security. And the Sonic characters that X kills? Those are actually his previous victims, trapped in the bodies of Sonic characters and forced to be his "slaves" (all the while they're being killed in-"game" in very gruesome manners just to play with future victims before he steals their souls).
  • Evil Laugh: He regularly lets out one that Tom describes is similar to Kefka's (and, in the playable version, is Kefka's).
  • Evil Twin: X to the real Sonic. According to backstory information, however, he didn't start out that way. He only adapted an appearance resembling Sonic because he's a huge fan of him.
  • Eye Scream: His eyes bleed constantly, and he's also ripped off the eyes of some of his victims.
  • For the Evulz: All the things X does like trapping Sonic's best friend into hellish dimension for torture and/or kill them are simply to satiate his sadistic and depraved instinct.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: He makes it completely clear to the players of the game that they're not safe from him.
  • Gem Tissue: His true form's quills are crystalline at the tips.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Tom gets into one of these when playing as Knuckles. Whenever he tries to punch X, he teleports away every time, and eventually Knuckles just breaks down crying.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Implied. When Tom describes the "hyperrealistic" picture of him, he mentions that he had flesh around his mouth, which implies that he eats part of his victims.
  • I Have Many Names: Sonic.exe is his most famous, but his true name in the new canon is Xenophanes. In the old canon, his name was simply X, but the Cult of X retains its name, implying this to still be another name of his.
  • Neck Snap: He kills his Sally Acorn slave in Round 2 by doing this with only one hand.
  • Pop Culture Symbology: The entity manifesting itself as Sonic in-game is actually an Eldritch Abomination that has a dark cult of its own, specializing in distributing the game copies.
  • Power Floats: He's been shown floating when he's chasing some of his victims (most notably Tails in Hide And Seek), apparently this is because of his shoes, because they generate antigravity.
  • Super-Strength: X is capable of mutilating his slaves with his bare hands or ripping apart human jaws.
  • Unwinnable by Design: The "games" X presents himself in are actually inescapable traps used to torture and mangle his victims. The control the player has over the characters is simply a façade X uses to torment the player along with the characters.
  • Would Hurt a Child: X kills Tails. Subverted if you know via X's official backstory that they're actually X's previous victims trapped in a body resembling Tails'.
     Tom
The protagonist of the first installment. He got the Sonic.exe game from part of his best friend Kyle, who sent it to him with a note telling him to destroy it, guess what he does next.

  • Driven to Suicide: He hangs himself to run away from X, unfortunately this doesn't stop him from getting his soul stolen at the last minute.
  • The Hero Dies: In Round 2, it's revealed that he committed suicide to escape X, and then got his soul stolen anyway.
  • Skewed Priorities: He cares more about the in-game characters than his best friend Kyle, who likely got himself killed trying to save him. Sure, the in-game characters were eventually revealed to be human souls inside vessels designed after Sonic characters, but even then, there was no possible way for him to know this.
     Kyle
Tom's best friend. He's the one who sent the Sonic.exe disc to Tom, telling him to destroy it before it's too late.

  • The Ghost: He never appears in the story, merely being mentioned by Tom and Derek Green.
  • Posthumous Character: His soul is already stolen by the time Tom receives the game.
  • Schmuck Bait: Telling Tom to NOT play the disc he sent him and destroy it was the wrong thing to do, because guess what did he just do? Why, playing the game, of course!
    Derek Green
The protagonist of Round 2. He's a detective who investigates the Sonic.exe Murders.

     Shannon Goldman
The leader of the Cult Of X.

  • Misanthrope Supreme: She sees humanity as "stupid" and the Earth as "filthy", she wants to cleanse the Earth of humans, which is the reason she accepted being in the cult.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: She sends Bob Richardson the audio of X killing Derek to taunt him about his friend's death.
