The Howlers

A Ragtag Bunch of Misfits that Darrow puts together at the Institute during his leadership of House Mars who later become some of his core supporters.

The Howlers.

     The Howlers in general 
A band of students from House Mars at The Institute made up of outcasts from Gold society who become loyal followers of Darrow in the wars that follow, gradually expanding to include members from multiple different colors.
  • Animal Motifs: Wolves. The Howlers were founded after Sevro spent time in the wilderness with a pack of wolves, they're named after a wolf's howl and all of them wear wolf cloaks to signify their membership.
  • Praetorian Guard: Function as one to Darrow over the course of the series.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: What they started out as.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Darrow.

     Sevro au Barca

     Clown 
One of the original Howlers.
     Pebble 
One of the original Howlers.
     Horatius au Savag/Screwface 
One of the original Howlers from the first series. At the start of the Sequel Series, he is serving as a deep-cover spy within the ranks of the Society Remnant.
  • Ascended Extra: Only had a few minor appearances in the original trilogy and was Put on a Bus for Iron Gold, but returned in Dark Age with several major scenes and significant development.
  • Given Name Reveal: Dark Age gives his real name as Horatius au Savag.
  • The Mole: During the Time Skip he was sent undercover to infiltrate Atalantia's legions.
     Weed 
One of the original Howlers.
     Harpy 
A Howler who was recruited from Darrow's army at The Institute.
     Rotback 
A Howler who was recruited from Darrow's army at The Institute.
     Quinn 
One of the original Howlers from Darrow's class at the Institute. Though she was killed before ever learning of Darrow's secret, Sevro believed that she would've joined the rest of the Howlers in supporting Darrow over Gold.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Aja brutally beating her establishes how far Octavia will go in order to kill Darrow, and her subsequent death ultimately leads to Roque's betrayal at the end of Golden Son.

     Milia au Trachus 

  • Back for the Dead: Returns in Iron Gold after being absent in Morning Star, only to be killed before the end of the book.

     Holiday ti Nakamura 
A Gray spy for the Sons of Ares within the ranks of the Society's infamous Thirteenth Legion. She and her brother Trigg break Darrow out of prison at the beginning of Morning Star and she becomes a key player in the Rising from then on.
  • Action Girl: Comes with the territory of being a Gray and a Sons of Ares agent.
  • Artificial Limbs: Both of her legs are prosthetic from the thighs down.
  • Big Sister Mentor: To her younger brother Trigg.
  • Electronic Eyes: Has one of these in addition to her two prosthetic legs.
  • The Mole: She and her brother are spies for the Sons of Ares within the ranks of the Thirteenth Legion.
  • Parental Neglect: She describes her father as being the kind of man with "a different family in every port."
  • Retired Badass: Took a step back from the front lines in Iron Gold to serve as Virginia's chief bodyguard and head of security.

     Colloway Char 
A Blue Howler who became the famous pilot in the Solar Republic fleet.
     Min-Min 
One of the new Howlers recruited during the Time Skip

     Alexandar Arcos 
The oldest grandson of Lorn au Arcos and Darrow's lancer.
  • The Ace: The most skilled of the younger generation of Howlers, he proves invaluable to his allies in combat situations.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Lysander shoots him in the head.
  • Cultured Warrior: A refined and knowledgeable contrast to Rhonna's rougher background.
  • Field Promotion: Officially inducted into the Howlers in the middle of battle during the beginning of Dark Age.
  • Glory Seeker: One of his major motivations in Iron Gold is to live up to his grandfather's reputation.
  • Heroic Lineage: Alexander is the oldest of the heirs of Lorn au Arcos, who was arguably the greatest Gold knight of his day.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He goes into Tyche expecting to die rescuing civilians.
  • The Idealist: A true believer in the Republic and his fellow man. This indirectly yields to his doom, as he lets his guard down near the incognito Lysander out of gratitude.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though often arrogant, smug and glory-seeking, Alexandar proves his character at Tyche when he willingly goes into great danger to save civilians from the tides.
  • Killed Off for Real: Killed by Lysander at the climax of Dark Age.
  • Like a Son to Me: Light Bringer refers to him as Darrow's archLancer, a position Darrow explicitly says are often like children to their commanding officers.
  • Ship Tease: With Rhonna.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Being a great razor master does you not good if you're out of armor and someone has a gun on you at point blank range.
