House Bellona

One of the two most powerful Gold families on Mars and the political rivals of House Augustus.

House Bellona

     House Bellona in general

First Generation

     Tiberius au Bellona

Tiberius in Sons of Ares Volume 3
Patriarch of House Bellona, father of Cassius, Karnus, and Julian. He serves as the Imperator of the Sixth fleet.
  • Ascended Extra: Has no lines in any of his handful of appearances in the novels, but in Sons of Ares: Volume 3, he gets a minor speaking role at the beginning of the graphic novel.
  • Decapitation Presentation: His head is mounted on a pike in Agea after the siege of Mars in Golden Son.
  • Hen Pecked Husband: He's submissive towards his wife after Julian dies.
  • Only Sane Man: Seems to be the only member of the Bellona family not obsessed with getting revenge for Julian's death.
  • The Unfought: Darrow never faces him in the series.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He gets one cameo at the end of Red Rising, one speaking appearance in the first half of Golden Son, and the next time we see him his head is mounted on a spike.

     Julia au Bellona

Julia au Bellona in Sons of Ares Volume 3
Matriacrch of House Bellona, wife of Tiberius, and mother of Cassius, Julian, and Karnus.
  • Ascended Extra: Only gets two lines during the original trilogy, but plays a more prominent role in the Sequel Series.
  • "Ass" in Ambassador: Her appearance in Iron Gold, on account of being a die-hard supporter of the oppressive regime that Republic replaced, and the fact that she still holds a grudge against Darrow for the death of Cassius' twin, Julian.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Refuses to eat until someone kills Darrow in revenge for Julian's death.
  • Revenge Myopia: Blames Darrow for Julian's death, even though she's fully aware that Augustus rigged The Passage to kill off a Bellona as part of the ongoing feud between the two families.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Only has a handful of appearances in three novels, but manages to cause significant internal shifts in two different factions:
    • Revealing that Darrow had kept the Society's emissaries a secret from the Senate destroys his credibility and gives the Vox Populi the momentum needed to strip him of his rank and order his arrest.
    • Pledging her forces to House Lune in Dark Age exacerbates the tension between Lysander, Atalantia, and Ajax and pushes the Society Remnant to the brink of an Enemy Civil War.

     Kellan au Bellona
Tiberius' brother and Praetor in the Sixth fleet.

     Iona au Bellona
The sister of Tiberius who married Nero au Augustus several decades before the series begins, only for him to murder her on their wedding night as revenge for her family's massacre of his own when he was a child.

Second Generation

     Karnus au Bellona
Cassius and Julian's older brother and the oldest son of Tiberius and Julia. His family sends him to the Academy with the explicit goal of murdering Darrow as revenge for Julian's death.
  • Ax-Crazy: Referred to as the family killing machine
  • Blood Knight: He proves it at the gala.
  • The Brute: House Bellona's attack dog.
  • Hidden Depths: Imparts a surprisingly insightful worldview to Darrow at a banquet on Luna. Notably, this is not long after publicly brutalizing him and right before springing the Sovereign's trap to wipe out House Augustus.
  • Jerkass: Views Julian as a weakling.
  • Straw Nihilist: Karnus believes that life doesn't really matter since when they all die the universe will go on without them as if nothing happened.

     Cassius au Bellona
See the Solar Republic page.

     Julian au Bellona
Member of House Mars and brother of Cassius. He's killed by Darrow in the passage at the beginning of their year at the Institute, and his death motivates the feud that erupts between Darrow and Cassius for the rest of the series.
  • Glove Slap: Challenges Sevro to duel the first time they meet.
  • Involuntary Battle to the Death: After befriending Darrow, he is forced to fight him for access to the Gold academy. Darrow wins, breaking his own heart.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Introduced only to be killed a few chapters later.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his twin Cassius and also his other brothers. While they want to bring glory and honour to the family name, Julian is more idealistic.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Spends the whole Passage in complete denial and is fully convinced that he can peacefully talk Darrow into surrendering, and they'll both be to leave alive.

     Cagney au Bellona
Kellan's daughter and the cousin of Karnus, Cassius, and Julian.
