    Frisk

Frisk Bulalacao

Frisk Bulalacao is a non-binary human who lives in proximity of Mount Ebott and The Protagonist of Monster In the Mountain. Around the same time as the appearance of the legendary Monster in the Mountain, Frisk would receive images of a vacant land and how to get there, which they would come to understand to be the place that is beneath Mount Ebott.

11 years later, at the age of 20, Frisk would follow up on those visions and locate the hole leading to the Underground in reality, in the hopes of investigating and subduing the legendary Monster in the Mountain.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Frisk, whose life before falling into the Underground is a complete unknown in canon, was orphaned in a car crash in proximity to Mt. Ebott when they were nine. They then fell under the care of their aunt and cousin for the next 11 years.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Frisk comes from a family of Filipino descent. The use of customary units implies that Frisk is Filipino-American.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Frisk initially find's Asriel's Universe Pocket, a pocket dimension Asriel uses for storage, to be impossible even for gods, even though a) gods are generally believed to have impossible abilities, and b) by that point he has already proven the existence of levitation, teleportation, telepathy, and magic contracts.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Frisk came into the Underground to subdue the Monster in the Mountain (Asriel Dreemurr), a creature that eleven years ago is said to have taken the souls of multiple exploration and rescue teams, and in canon is nominally invincible and had infinite attack power, yet all they brought with them as a weapon was...a multitool pocket knife. Asriel's first words even Lampshade how utterly unprepared they were for the endpoint of this journey.
  • Fool for Love: Frisk is very much aware that Asriel is hiding very problematic secrets from them, yet continuously chooses to ignore and even outright deny them out of affection for him. Even going so far as to forgive him right after he just killed billions of people simply because he undid it with time travel, something not even Asriel himself could abide by.
  • Martial Pacifist: Despite having no martial experience whatsoever, Frisk is an astonishingly good fighter. Because they are an Actual Pacifist however, this skill was only ever used in the fight against Asgore and Photoshop Flowey.
  • Morality Pet: To Asriel, especially when it's implied humanity might have been destroyed if not for their love for each other.
  • My Parents Are Dead: Frisk's parents died in a car crash next to Mt. Ebott when they were nine. Frisk survived, and ended up wandering around the mountain's forest before being rescued, and was raised by a loving aunt and cousin in the stead of their parents.
  • Older Than They Look: Technically speaking, Frisk had unknowingly lived through centuries of lives through Asriel's time loops, even becoming a centenarian in one of them. In addition, Frisk, as well as every other human, might actually be one year older than they believe due to Asriel's memory wipe.
  • The Tease: Even before coming to the mountain, Frisk was known to be "amazingly flirty," and their humor includes various sex jokes. Hell, Frisk's first action on meeting Asriel was to flirt with him.
  • Vulgar Humor: Part of Frisk's humor as The Tease involves crude jokes which, to both their consternation and amusement, prompts Asriel to duct tape their mouth.

The Monster in the Mountain, or the Absolute God of Hyperdeath as he likes to call himself, is the Deuteragonist and former Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Monsters, Asriel Dreemurr.

After a traumatic incident in his childhood resulted in the disappearance of every other monster beside himself and T-Drop, Asriel was transformed into a god which, among other things, has the ability to reset time. He would use his newfound strength to break the Barrier that once held monsters within Mount Ebott, but failed to establish himself on the surface due to being attacked by humans whenever he tries.

Resigned to live out his life in his empty kingdom, he would concoct an 11-year-long plan to lure Frisk into the Underground and make them his companion to stave off loneliness.
  • Affably Evil: By deed, Asriel is the worst mass-murderer in the history of monsters and humans a thousand times over, destroying the world so many times that his kill count measures in the trillions (for reference, the number of human beings to ever exist IRL is approximately 100 billion). Yet despite everything, he grief and love for Frisk is so genuine that it is easy to forget just what he is capable of doing.
  • A God Am I: Asriel styles himself as the Absolute God of Hyperdeath. While his power may qualify him as a Physical God, it is unlikely that he is a god in the classical sense.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: It is strongly implied that Asriel's love for Frisk, and the reason humanity still lives, is because Frisk became their Only Friend after the True Pacifist Ending.
  • Berserk Button: Asriel hates it whenever Frisk makes lewd thoughts or comments, or misconstrues his requests for sexual favors. He also particularly doesn't care for being given the nickname "Az" by Frisk. Frisk, being that they are in no physical danger because of their contract, just finds it hilarious, and at most will receive duct tape to the mouth.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Asriel wanted to date Frisk from day 1, but his self-loathing and fears of further ruining Frisk's life and well being beyond their de-facto slavery to him kept him playing as the aloof, hateful god. It is not until chapter 13 that he finally confesses his love to Frisk.
  • Consummate Liar: Asriel claims to be this, and has lied to Frisk about certain things about himself. Given the stated ship, the most obvious one is that he is unattracted to Frisk.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Asriel had planned to make Frisk's stay in the Underground as comfortable as possible, and executed the movement of all of Frisk's belongings to New Home the moment they agreed to his contract. He has also gone as far as install internet and a bathroom, the later of which monsters do not seem to require, only humans.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Ultimately, what Asriel wants more than anything else is for Frisk to love him, and is deeply frightened by the possibility of losing them.
  • The Empath: Asriel, as a result of binding Frisk's soul to the shrine, has an empathic link to Frisk, and can thus feel their emotions.
  • Evil God: Subverted, while Asriel is a Jerkass, he is never seen using his god-like powers for evil beyond self-defense and the occasional theft. Double Subverted when it is revealed he had killed billions of humans across previous timelines, and kills billions more in this one just to demonstrate to Frisk that he's a horrible monster.
  • Exorcist Head: Asriel pulls this on Naptstablook while the ghost was muttering an apology to Frisk, annoyed at the ghost's presence.
  • God of the Dead: Played With. The Absolute God of Hyperdeath is not a god in the traditional sense (rather a monster powered by human souls), but he has control over the souls of six humans and all but one of the monsters, which is how he gained godhood in the first place. Incidentally, becoming the Absolute God of Hyperdeath renders Asriel unable to create life with magic or any other method. This includes his body, which is unable to create semen and therefore making him sterile. That said, engaging in sex can still result in conception due to monster magic.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Red-eyed actually, but nonetheless, Asriel is very possessive of Frisk, thinking of them as his, and becomes very jealous and irritable when forced to share Frisk's time with Napstablook. Worse, he can't do anything because of his agreement never to hurt or command Napstablook, and would not risk loosing Frisk to a failed attempt at a Loophole Abuse to get rid of him.
  • I Am a Monster: Asriel is fully convinced he is an irredeemable monster that deserves none of the love Frisk gives to him. It's made all the more poignant when he demonstrates this to Frisk by destroying the Earth and Moon before loading a save.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Asriel’s immense and egotistical god-complex hides his deep insecurities and self-loathing born of his terrible actions in past timelines.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Asriel is a possessive, spoiled, misanthropic god-prince that verbally abuses Napstablook, regularly steals things from the surface, stalked Frisk for eleven years, manipulated them into staying in the Underground, regularly calls them an idiot, and has most likely murdered the exploration teams that came eleven years ago. However, the killings appear to be cases of self-defense, and in spite of all of his cruel behavior, he shows genuine care for the well-being of Frisk and goes to great efforts to ensure their comfort in the Underground. He never physically harms Frisk nor Napstablook, and willingly includes prohibitions against him harming anyone in his Magically-Binding Contract with Frisk.
    • Ultimately, his love for Frisk overpowers his wish to have them love him back such that he reveals the genocides he committed and restores their memories rather than deceive them further.
  • Karmic Thief: Played With. Asriel acquires food ingredients and human-made items through theft, but claims he takes it from those he finds "unworthy". In two specific cases, he steals a coffee from a husband that abuses his wife, and gems from a racist collector. Because he is a Consummate Liar however, it's unclear if this is true or to what degree the average victim is "unworthy".
  • Last of His Kind: Shares the title with Napstablook for last remaining monsters.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Zig-Zagged, Asriel Dreemurr is a Walking Spoiler in Undertale. The method by which he became a god however, revived as a psychopathic flower and absorbing the souls of all monsters, is as of yet unmentioned, and Frisk is completely unaware.
  • Living Apart: Asriel can detach his extremities from his body, including his head. He uses this ability mostly to extend the reach of his hands, and once detaches his head to allow Frisk to more conveniently polish the horns on his head.
  • Lonely at the Top: Asriel is indisputably the most powerful being in the world, and has the power to do anything he wants without permanent consequences. However, this power came at the cost of the lives of all but one other monster, and is unable to interact with humanity without causing them to attempt to kill him or treat him as an object of worship. This has left him utterly alone, and thus desperately craves affection from Frisk.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: The monsters are trapped within an illusion created by Asriel so he can feed off their souls to maintain his form.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Asriel lies about his past and taking away an entire year of life with monsters from Frisk so that he could maintain a friendly relationship with Frisk, and then to preserve their love of him. It eventually becomes too much once they are pregnant, and he restores their memories even when it meant the possibility of losing them.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Asriel successfully engineered an 11-year-long plan to lure Frisk to Mt. Ebott by drip-feeding them dreams of various locations in the Underground until it motivates them to locate it when they become 20. Once they arrived, he then exploits their sympathy for Napstablook's suffering (which he caused) by offering the ghost's freedom as a condition for their servitude to him.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Zig-Zagged. With the exception of Chara and Frisk, Asriel despises human beings and makes a point of stating he finds them unattractive. He also finds the idea of hypothetically becoming a human extremely repulsive, though he is nonetheless an avid consumer of human culture (particularly Latin literature), and has a circle of friends, past and present, comprised exclusively of humans.
  • Physical God: Asriel does not have any real divinity attached to him, but the power of seven human souls is enough for the difference to be academic.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Asriel's eyes, as the Absolute God of Hyperdeath have changed from their canonical white slits to black slits with red irises. ZigZagged in that while yes, Asriel is a complete Jerkass that has inspired an urban legend by causing the disappearance of an exploration and rescue team, he is almost completely harmless to Frisk, who actually finds his eyes to be the most beautiful feature about him.
  • Royal Brat: He's a prince to a kingdom, and a complete Jerkass to people he doesn't like (or pretends to not like). Subverted with people he genuinely likes such as Frisk, to which he would happily dedicate himself to them out of love.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Despite the above behavior, he is very engaged in maintaining his kingdom as he is the only one left besides Napstablook, and the only one capable of performing such maintenance. He also personally crafts his own furniture and gifts for Frisk, and completely renovated a room for Frisk to sleep in.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Asriel's dramatic change in appearance from his canon God of Hyperdeath form represents centuries of spiritual decay from guilt and depression from betraying everyone he knew and loved.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Asriel has been sending Frisk dreams of the Underground since they were nine, and has watched them for just as long through the use of telepathy and invisibility. When Frisk arrives, he plays cruel pranks that accentuate this (signing a message with "=)", giving them a Jump Scare with a disembodied voice, and placing a snowperson in the shape of Frisk when they were nine) before formally introducing himself, and then creeps into their room one night and whispers his ownership over them. Understandably, this creeps Frisk to no end in their initial meeting. And, as the trope implies, he is madly in love with them and just couldn't spit it out for months.
Play with me all you want, but don’t you ever forget Frisk… you’re.. mine…
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is at least eight feet tall, wears a black, ragged robe, has black eyes and black fascial markings, and is handsome in Frisk's eyes.
  • Telepathy: Asriel can read minds, project his vision telepathically, and send images into Frisk's mind. However, he finds mind reading very disorienting.
  • Teleportation: Asriel has several modes of fast travel available to him, including teleportation, which according to Frisk produces an "odd noise".
  • Took a Level in Badass: Asriel gained or learned new powers that were not present in Undertale. While he only had his powers for a few minutes in Undertale, it has been eleven years plus an unknown number of timelines since he acquired his powers in Monster in the Mountain, giving him time to learn and train with his powers.
    • He can produce a black metal of unknown properties and unknown means.
    • He can now use the Void for teleportation, portals, and storage.
    • The Whisper Soul is a technique specifically designed to allow him to take Frisk's soul without depriving them of emotion. This technique has a side-effect of giving him an empathic link to Frisk.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Asriel's behavior as an adult is much more crude and malicious than when he was a child. This is because the decade-long isolation and repeated failures to be able to go to the surface have made him misanthropic and socially stunted after at least 11 years of isolation.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: However, as Frisk spends more time with him, his anti-social behavior starts to fall apart. This is in part because some (but not all) of it was an act so that he and Frisk do not have to confront their affection for the other. When he finally confesses his love in chapter 13, his hostile demeanor has largely faded, and he was even willing to let Frisk visit their aunt on their own.
  • Tsundere: It took him months to let Frisk know that he loves them, instead exerting an arrogant persona disgusted by any sexual or romantic remark by Frisk to cover up his insecurities.
  • Urban Legend: Asriel is known to humanity as the legendary "Monster in the Mountain", a creature that lives beyond the cave entrance that mysteriously appeared in Mount Ebott 11 years ago. He had caused the disappearance of cave exploration teams and the rescue team sent to find them, and is said to have taken their souls. Frisk was partially inspired to investigate the legend so that the threat could be neutralized for good.
  • Vague Age: Asriel has gone through an unknown number of timelines as the Absolute God of Hyperdeath. As such his age in terms of total experienced time is unknown to the reader. He has, however, traveled through time enough that he can not recall his exact age, only that he is in his early twenties in the present timeline. He eventually settles on twenty-seven as the age for his human alter-ego.
  • Visual Development: The Absolute God of Hyperdeath has significant cosmetic changes made to signify his spiritual decay as he wallowed in misery from countless time loops.
    • The simple-curled, outward facing horns are now inward-facing and have a bent S-shape to them.
    • The tear-streak markings beneath his eyes are now crescents.
    • His white slits on his eyes are now red with black pupils.
    • His robes, which once appeared very similar to Toriel's robes, are now completely black and are torn at the edges.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Asriel's Visual Development is possible because can change his physical appearance at will or even change what creature he is. He is even able to shapeshift into a human form.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Of the temporal variety. His child's existence would be irreversibly erased if he traveled back in time before their conception. Thus, he is stuck with the consequences of the current timeline.

    T-Drop

T-Drop/Napstablook

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frisk_s_painting_of_blooky_by_twix015_dedlaib.png
The amnesiac ghost of the Underground. T-Drop remembers nothing about his life before the appearance of the Monster in the Mountain, who styles the ghost as their permanent servant. However, T-Drop's Shrinking Violet personality grated on the other monster, causing the two to isolate from each other for most of the 11 years since they've met.

T-Drop would be kept isolated to the Waterfall region until the arrival of Frisk, who would sell their soul to the Monster in the Mountain in exchange for T-Drop's freedom. It is not long afterwards that T-Drop finally learns something about his past life: his name is Napstablook.
  • Achievement In Ignorance: In Undertale, Napstablook is the only monster whose soul was not taken by Asriel, as he was indoors and closed his blinds, saving his life. It is likely the same circumstances occurred here as well.
  • Grew a Spine: He eventually grows comfortable enough—in no small part thanks to Frisk—to tell Asriel he should release Frisk's soul. This manages to even impress him.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Napstablook does not remember anything about his life before he met Asriel, and until recently only went by the name T-Drop.
  • Last of His Kind: Shares the title with Asriel for last remaining monsters.
    The Monsters (unmarked spoilers ahead)

The Monsters

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitm_title_3.png

What caught their attention was that in the pews, were misshapen dark shadow creatures of all shapes and sizes, their eyes completely white and glowing, all of them staring dead ahead toward the windows, as if they were waiting. . .

The native inhabitants of the Underground who disappeared in the incident that brought Asriel Dreemurr to godhood.

In truth, as is shown in Undertale, their souls are all imprisoned within Asriel's physical vessel, providing the last bit of power he needs to achieve godhood and assume the form of a monster.

They have been imprisoned within a false reality for at least 11 years. With Asriel's power to reverse time, the monsters have likely been trapped for much, much longer. Since their imprisonment, they have devolved into shades that bear little resemblance to themselves save a retention of their rough outline.

  • And I Must Scream: The monsters maintain a degree of awareness of the outside world, unable to call for help except to scream in Asriel's mind to free them and restore Frisk's memories.
  • Broken Record: Toriel appears to be stuck on certain phrases like "do you need help?" She appears to be aware of this, and is annoyed by it.
  • Fighting from the Inside: The moment Frisk returned to Asriel's life, the monsters have been crying in uproar for him to release them.
  • Heroic Second Wind: After centuries of relative dormancy, it is Frisk's return caused the monsters to rise in an uproar to try and get Asriel to set them free.
  • Living Battery: Asriel traps the monsters in a false reality so he can feed off their souls to gain power and the ability to feel love.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Monster souls are far weaker than human souls. Because of this, even though Asriel has six out of the seven human souls he needs, he must absorb the souls of almost every monster in the Underground to equal just one human soul for a substitution.

    The Child (MAJOR CHARACTER SPOILERS)

The Child

The unexpected offspring of Frisk Bulalacao and Asriel Dreemurr. Contrary to his understanding of his own biology, Asriel was biologically sterile, but not incapable of magical conception, and somewhere within his and Frisk's sex lives, they accidentally conceived a child with a hybrid soul.

  • Bizarre Alien Biology: The mechanics of the child's conception. Due to unusual circumstances, Asriel's body cannot produce sperm. However, the AU is an offshoot of Growing Pains, where conception can still happen if done with a soul mate in the presence of an immense amount of magic and Determination. Even then, this method is rare even for monsters. Given the child's parents are both high in Determination and the father has infinite magic, however...
  • Plot Device: The revelation of the child's existence rapidly accelerates Asriel's plans to reveal the Awful Truth to Frisk, and is ultimately part of what motivates him to reconcile with Frisk in the fallout of The Reveal.
  • Ret-Gone: Implicitly, because the makeup of a child is a game of chance on conception, it would be impossible to conceive the same child again if Asriel were to turn back to before their conception. Therefore, Asriel cannot return to before Frisk’s pregnancy, or else the child will be gone. Forever.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Is the product of one, as Asriel is incapable of producing sperm. What he did not realize was the existence of a magical method. See Bizarre Alien Biology above.
