Family

    Omer

Omer Jarrah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jarrah_omer_1031.jpg
Played By: Cas Anver & Xavier Raabe-Manupule

Sayid's older brother.

  • Abusive Parents: His father was a hard man, who believed that A Real Man Is a Killer.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He seems nice enough, but he's really a Dirty Coward who isn't above pressuring his own brother into trying to save his hide.
  • Dirty Coward: Omer tries to get Sayid to clean up the mess he made, i.e. send his own brother into a confrontation with extremely dangerous criminals to save his own hide. He even tries to use his family as justification.
  • Jerkass: He gets in over his head with dangerous people, and then tries to pressure Sayid into cleaning up his mess.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: From Keamy and/or his thugs. He's beaten so badly he winds up in hospital.
  • The Un-Favorite: Not that Sayid got better treatment, but Omer was considered weak by his father. His father isn't wrong.

    Mr. Jarrah

Mr. Jarrah

Played By: Sayed Bedreya

The father of Sayid and Omer, and he was a soldier in the Iraqi Republican Guard.

  • Abusive Parent: To Sayid and Omar, with whom he was extremely harsh and domineering. He tried to instil very outdated values in them through emotional (and possibly physical) abuse.
  • No Name Given: His actual name isn't given, although a casting call names him as "Hassan", which isn't canon.
  • A Real Man Is a Killer: A fervent believer in this, as seen when he declares how proud he is of Sayid for killing a chicken that Omer could not.

Other Characters

    Omar

Omar

Played By: Navid Negahban

Sayid's superior in the Republican Guard, some time after Desert Storm. He was the one who informed Sayid of his promotion in rank from a Communications Officer to an Intelligence Officer. He also forced Sayid to interrogate his love, Nadia, whom he ordered to be tortured.

  • Affably Evil: He might be complicit in torture (or even a torturer himself) but he's very reasonable and makes no secret of his admiration for Sayid. Omar actually seems like a pretty good boss to have.
  • Character Death: Sayid shoots and kills him to help Nadia escape.

    Cole & Hewitt

Agent Alyssa Cole & Robbie Hewitt

Agents from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent and Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS), who blackmailed Sayid to work for them to betray his old friend Essam Tasir in order to find stolen explosives, all in exchange for information about Nadia's whereabouts.

  • Good Is Not Nice: They're trying to foil a terrorism plot, but are doing so through shady means, specifically Blackmail. Their personalities also leave a lot to be desired.
  • Jerkass: Both of them come across as superior and smug.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: Averted, they get along very well.
  • Pet the Dog: They do this rather weakly with regard to Sayid. They're smug, amoral jerks but even they seem to realize how badly they screwed up and what they put Sayid through, showing evident shame at being partially responsible for Essam's death. When Sayid demands that they change his flight so he can claim Essam's body, they acquiesce without hesitation or question.
  • Those Two Guys: They're only ever seen together.

    Essam

Essam Tahir

Played By: Donnie Keshawarz

A former college roommate of Sayid at the University of Cairo, where he earned a degree in philosophy. Essam's wife, Zahra, was killed in the bombings of civilian areas in Baghdad (during the American invasion of Iraq), while shopping for a dress. In the events of his wife's death, the then angry and desperate Essam is lured into a terrorist cell in Sydney, Australia, that aims to disrupt the US-lead Coalition prison on Iraq.

  • Ate His Gun: After Sayid's betrayal.
  • Butt-Monkey: In his only episode, he's manipulated by terrorists following his wife's death and betrayed by his only friend.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Following the death of his wife.
  • Driven to Suicide: After Sayid reveals he's working with the CIA, Essam loses it and puts a gun in his mouth.
  • The Fundamentalist: Averted. He would seem to be since he's working with terrorists, but he's motivated by revenge and his religion almost dissuades him.
"I'm not afraid to die. It's all the innocent lives — all those people. The Imam preaches peace, Sayid. Every human life is sacred."
  • Not Afraid to Die: He says as much. Taking lives is another matter.
  • Posthumous Character: He dies prior to the events of the series.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: They make Sayid's betrayal and Essam's subsequent suicide all the more heart-breaking.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Essam starts to realize that he's motivated by revenge for the death of his wife, and knows it's no reason to hurt people.
"What if I'm doing this because I'm angry? What if I'm doing this because they killed her?"
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He's destroyed by Sayid's betrayal, and lets him know it.
Essam: You said you were my brother. You were supposed to be my brother, my friend.
    Sayid: I am your friend.
Essam: A friend who told me to do this for Zahra just so you could find some woman that you love?!

    Haddad

Haddad

Played By: Dariush Kashani

The leader or a leading figure of the terrorist cell in Australia of which Essam was a member.

    Tariq

Tariq

Played By: Marc Cassabani

Sayid's superior in the Republican Guard during Operation Desert Storm. When U.S. forces entered a bunker, he ordered the destruction of numerous documents. He was captured alongside Sayid.

  • Asshole Victim: Tariq is a cowardly monster who kills civilians; it's easy to see why Sayid resorted to torturing him.
  • Bad Boss: Aside from being aggressive toward his own men, when they're shredding documents and soldiers burst in with the command to stop or be shot, Tariq says nothing. He's willing to let them die for little reason.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Sayid eventually resorts to torturing him for information. It works.
  • Dirty Coward: Tariq easily orders Sayid to kill himself for the sake of his honor, but refuses to do the same thing because he values his own life above all else.
Tariq: Take that bag. Put it over your head and tape it up. Kill yourself, now! That's an order. Do it and die with what little honor you have left.
Sayid: You would have me take my own life — the information means nothing to you!
  • Hypocrite: Tariq has no problem trying to get Sayid to sacrifice himself, but won't allow himself to die. It seems he's perfectly fine with letting people die for the cause, when he isn't included among them.
  • Jerkass: He repays Sayid's loyalty and attempts to save him with insults and disdain.
  • Smug Snake: He doesn't think Sayid will hurt him, and maintains his confidence for a long time despite not being in any position to be so smug.
  • Spiteful Spit: Right in Sayid's eye.
  • Tempting Fate: Tariq goes out of his way to antagonize Sayid and Inman, remaining smug and uncooperative. He even tells Sayid he wouldn't dare torture him. He's wrong on that count.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He remains fairly defiant, but his expression does start to crack a little as he slowly realizes that Sayid is about to torture him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He personally oversaw the use of sarin gas on a civilian marketplace, with children.

    Sami

Sami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sami_2309.jpg
Played By: Shaun Toub

"You were a torturer, were you not, in the Republican Guard? Do you not recognize one of your victims? Do you not recognize the woman you tortured? Do you not recognize my WIFE?!"

The husband of Amira, a woman who accused Sayid of torturing her once while he was working for the Republican Guard.

  • Happily Married: To Amira. He adores and loves her, and goes so far as to kidnap, imprison and torture a man based solely on her word to achieve justice and closure for her. He has every intention of murdering Sayid, such is his depth of feeling for Amira.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: He tortures Sayid with repeated, savage beatings fuelled by rage.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Sami seemingly believes in this, brutally torturing Sayid as revenge for Sayid's Cold-Blooded Torture of Amira.
  • Undying Loyalty: To his beloved wife, Amira.
  • Torture Technician: For Sayid when he kidnaps him. Sami isn't the professional that Sayid is, but his anger makes up for his lack of experience.

    Amira

Amira

"I forgive you."
Played By: Anne Bedian

Sami's wife. When living in Iraq, Amira was tortured by Sayid while he was working for the Republican Guard. Her torture involved being scalded with hot oil, which left permanent scars on her arms and hands.

  • Broken Bird: After her torture at the hands of Sayid, she became a recluse unable to leave her house. She was always afraid.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: She endured this at the hands of Sayid.
  • Happily Married: To her husband, Sami, who's willing to kidnap, torture and possibly kill someone at her behest.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: What finally got her to leave her apartment was to stop a bunch of kids torturing a cat, which she then took in and cared for.
  • Motive Rant: A highly sympathetic, non-villainous version. She goes into detail about her life after Sayid's torture.
"After my husband and I first arrived to Paris, I was afraid to ever leave our apartment. So I would stare out in the window into the alley, and I would see this cat looking for scraps. One day some children came into the alley and trapped him in a box. I watched them light firecrackers and drop them in the box. I could hear him howl from three stories above. So finally, I had a reason to leave my apartment. I rescued this cat and I brought him home. He sits with me when I read, sleeps with me, and he purrs. But, every once in a while, he will bite me or scratch me. He does this because sometimes he forgets that he is safe now. So I forgive him when he bites me, because I remember what it is like to never feel safe. And that is because of you. So today, I ask only one thing of you: I ask you now to show me the respect by acknowledging what you did to me. That it was you who questioned me, tortured me and that you remember me."
  • Scars are Forever: Amira has been left with visible and permanent scarring due to the hot oil Sayid tortured her with.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She only appears in one episode, but her forgiveness of Sayid has a massive impact on how he chooses to live his life.
