We'll become the new "LiGHTs"!
A new idol group, all inspired by the legendary group Ray and aiming to become like shining stars like them. They are led by Tiara, the younger sister of Ray's former leader, Eliza.

They have the questionable distinction of being at the bottom of the school, constantly teetering on the brink of expulsion, as for however much they excel in various areas they have many more weaknesses that they need to overcome.
    open/close all folders
    In General
  • Absurdly Divided School: They are Lapis rank. By the end of the anime, they have graduated to Rouge rank.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After the other units fail to accumulate enough mana to activate the Prism Wall during their orchestras at the Ceaster Festival, LiGHTs arrives and performs their own song, boosting mana levels sufficiently enough to do so.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Lavie frequently does something stupid or proudly displays her ignorance, Ashley tries to set her straight.
  • Childhood Friends: Rosetta and Tiara, though the former was supposed to be the latter's maid.
  • Foil: To supernova. Though they were both heavily inspired by Ray and aim to reach the same heights as them, they contrast in several ways:
    • LiGHTs is at the very bottom at Lapis rank, supernova is at the highest at Noire.
    • LiGHTs spends most of the series on the verge of failure with their attempts oftentimes backfiring due to their own incompetence, supernova is Flora Girls' best unit.
    • LiGHTs suffers from most of their members having glaring flaws that keep them from being model students and witches, to say the least, while all of supernova's members were handpicked for their skill and expertise.
  • Loser Protagonist: Right from the start of the series, the group is on the verge of failure due to numerous negative points gained from poor academic performance (Lavie, who keeps failing her tests and hates studying), reckless behavior (Ashley, who too quickly gives in to her temper and violence), or clumsy mistakes (Lynette, who frequently accidentally breaks school property and struggles in physical exams beside). Tiara also struggles to keep up with the curriculum due to being a late enrollee, was not formally trained and prepared to become a witch like her older sister Eliza, and being so sickly in her youth that she wouldn't have been physically capable of doing so. The only exception to this is Rosetta who is always within the top 3 of every class, is a class representative, but a poor leader who struggles to get the group's act together until Tiara comes in and does the job for her. It's made especially poignant and painful in Episode 11 when we find out that Eliza had Chloe put Tiara in their group for the sole purpose of getting her and the rest of the unit expelled with no one raising eyebrows.
  • No Sense of Direction: Upon being tasked to inform the others about Tiara and Champe entering a creepy Haunted House in the woods, Lavie and Ashley proceed to get lost and only get found by the time all is said and done.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: After reuniting with Tiara following their expulsion, the rest of the unit becomes this for a few days, living a lavish lifestyle at the royal palace. They only snap out of this mindset once Lynette realizes that they have no solid plan for the future once they manage to actually find Tiara again.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: At the end of Episode 9, after LiGHTs have been expelled from the Academy and Tiara is forcibly returned to Bristol, the rest of the group resolve to travel there from Mamuceaster to reunite the group.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Lavie and Ashley oftentimes butt-heads (oftentimes over the former's stupidity), but Lavie is still quick to say that they're the best of friends.

    Tiara

I'll make the flower of Hope bloom in everyone's hearts!

Voiced by: Anzai Yukari

Country of Origin: Waleland
Age: 16
School Club: Gardening Club

Bright, cheerful, and determined to make others smile, Tiara is the leader of LiGHTS. Plagued by a weak constitution and illness during her early childhood, she has always dreamed of becoming like her older sister Eliza, a witch who protects and brings happiness to her people.

She is currently attending Flora Girls' Academy in secret, with only her childhood friend and former maid Rosetta knowing her identity as the second princess of Waleland.

  • Admiring the Abomination: She's very fond of dangerous, carnivorous plants like Mandrakes. It's telling when a plant with sharp teeth is demanding she give it her blood, Tiara is serenely admiring it like you would a cute bunny.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Tia", used by Rosetta.
  • All-Loving Hero: She has nothing but love and affection for everyone and living things in general. Despite Yue's constant, inexplicable hostility and coldness to her she still openly states her admiration for her and supernova's talent and her desire for LiGHTs to reach the same level, she treats dangerous plants like mandrakes like they were any other harmless plant, and is generally incredibly idealistic and kind.
  • Audience Surrogate: She's enrolled in the middle of the semester and has to have things constantly explained to her due to freshman orientation being long over. Thanks to her sheltered upbringing in the castle and never being able to get out much due to her health, she is unaware of many everyday occurrences like the rotating schedule of student Opera venues to maintain power in different parts of Mamuceaster.
  • Badass Adorable: While she's just adorable in the anime due to being more of a support role, in the game, she definitely applies as a sweet plant-loving girl who can take down monsters with her sword and magic.
  • Big Sister Worship: She absolutely adores her older sister, Eliza, who was among other things an international sensation for her talent and the idol group she led, Ray.
  • Caring Gardener: Loves to take care of flowers, especially the more dangerous one like Mandrakes. It's telling that she refers to being able to withstand their horrible shrieking as being able to "listen to their songs".
  • Delicate and Sickly: She was plagued with an unknown illness in her childhood, causing her to be sickly and frequently bedridden as a child. She's long recovered and healthy by the time she reached her teens thanks to Eliza healing her at the cost of her own voice.
  • Didn't Think This Through: A frequent fate that befalls her incredibly idealistic style of leadership. She keeps morale up even when they're on the brink of failure, inspires her groupmates and other units beside, but her plans frequently backfire as she fails to think them through or account for everyone's personality flaws and weaknesses.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Tiara frequently demands Rosetta, her former servant, stop referring to her so politely and formally. It's especially prominent in the Japanese audio, with Rosetta struggling to stop using the honorific "-sama" and using a much more stiff, formal version of Japanese specifically for addressing those of higher rank than you. This is because Tiara is the second princess of the country and Rosetta is the only one who knows.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: In Episode 5, Tiara thinks Lucifer is going to let her have her map despite losing the board game they were playing. This is her reaction after Lucifer says she wants another round.
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: According to Anna, she used to wet the bed as a child.
  • Green Thumb: Her magical specialty. She has abilities like making tree roots and branches grow, twist, and reform to her will.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: As the leader of her group, she wields a sword in combat in the game.
  • Iconic Item: A tiara that was previously worn by her older sister, Eliza.
  • King Incognito: She is actually the second princess of Waleland, but tries to pass herself off as a normal student. Only Rosetta and Yue are aware of her true identity as royalty. The rest of LiGHTs don't find out until Episode 9, after the group is expelled and a carriage from the royal family comes to take Tiara home.
  • Lord Country: Her last name is "Waleland", the country whose royal family she is a member of.
  • Overly Long Name: Her full name is Tiara Victoria Rex Waleland.
  • Plucky Girl: In spite of years of being bedridden with illness during her early childhood, she still pushes on with her dream of becoming a witch like her sister. Not even the daunting odds and the numerous flaws and weaknesses of her group can bring her enthusiasm down.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Kaede briefly entertains the idea of using Tiara as a substitute older sister after she gets exasperated with Nadeshiko's intention to change her group's image without consulting her.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Just like her sister, she wants to be on the frontlines protecting her people and their smiles both.
  • Secret-Keeper: In Episode 8, Chloe lets her in on Angelica's true identity as Ange, formerly of Ray.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Poor health when she was younger and Eliza's protectiveness has kept her ignorant of many facets of witch life such as the mechanics of performing an Opera in public or many of the day-to-day business of life at Flora Girls' Academy.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: As a result of her sheltered upbringing, not being physically healthy enough to go out and experience the world, and protected by her older sister Eliza, she has a very naive and idealistic view of the world. While it does keep the group's morale up and pushes them to try to keep themselves from expulsion, Tiara's plans are frequently too optimistic and rarely thought-out leading to unintended and even harmful consequences.

I'm the class representatitive[sic]... no, I didn't fumble my words.

Voiced by: Risa Kubota

Country of Origin: Waleland
Age: 16
School Club: N/A as a Class Representative

An honors student always within the top 3 of her classes, Rosetta is a well-loved and responsible class representative, as befitting her status as the daughter of a noble family. However, she is not without her weaknesses and strange habits such as bouts of absentmindedness, her misguided determination to do without the help of others, and her obsession with sales, discounts, and customer loyalty programs like point cards.

She is Tiara's childhood friend, though unbeknownst to anyone else it was while serving as Tiara's handmaid and struggles to treat her less formally, now that they are supposed to be equals.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Rose", used by Tiara.
  • Good with Numbers: She appears to be this, as she precisely remembered how many days it has been since she last saw Tiara, after the two of them were reunited in Episode 1.
  • Guns Akimbo: Rosetta wields two pistols at once.
  • The Gunslinger: She prefers to use firearms in combat and fittingly for an idol, she has some fancy tricks to go along with the shooting.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Though a noble by birth, House Allenwick has recently fallen on hard times. This was because their territory was attacked by magical monsters and in the interest of keeping the public from panicking, the news was hidden away from the larger public and her father Lord Allenwick emptied their coffers for the reconstruction effort. She alleges they have enough to get by but Rosetta constantly works part-time jobs and keeps meticulous notes on her finances.
  • Invisibility: She can cast Transparency Magic to render herself and a few others invisible.
  • Invisibility with Drawbacks: Her usage of Transparency Magic comes with some drawbacks. To wit, she is not skilled enough to completely conceal herself or anyone else she uses the magic on, leaving their feet still visible. It also takes a lot of energy out of her and as such, can only be used for a short period of time, which is why LiGHTs could only use it once while infiltrating the castle.
  • Made of Iron: It's very subtle but she's got incredible stamina and endurance, being able to work several part-time jobs and stay within the top 3 of all her classes plus keep up with her unit's antics without showing signs of exhaustion. In Episode 10, after Lynette, Ashley, and Lavie are aching from 3 days of straight travel from Mamuceaster to Bristol, Rosetta is casually strolling into the city as if nothing happened.
  • Ms. Exposition: She does most of the exposition dumps, such as Flora Girls' Academy's rule, class, and grading systems; who new characters and units are when they're formally introduced; and other elements of the world such as the rotating schedule of Orchestra venues around Mamueceaster to keep power distribution even. Justified in that Tiara is a Sheltered Aristocrat, transferred in in the middle of the semester, and had no formal training to become a witch beforehand, as she ran away from the castle to join the Academy. She was also formerly Tiara's servant and one has to imagine this was one of her many duties as well.
  • Not So Above It All: While generally the most composed, cool, and reasonable of her unit, she gets very distressed and angry when Kaede asks Tiara to be her older sister and replace her actual blood-related sisters. Tiara even calls her out on her outburst upon which Rosetta can only sheepishly take it back.
  • The Reliable One: In a team that is full of less-than-ideal students, she's the one that consistently passes her classes, retains excellent grades, and has yet to directly get points docked for the group, and all this in spite of needing to work several part-time jobs for her family's sake. It should be noted, however, that she makes a terrible leader, as LiGHTs fortunes only started turning once Tiara took the helm.
  • Straight Man: Whereas Ashley is this exclusively to Lavie, Rosetta's normalness, responsibility, and general maturity makes her this for the group as a whole. She might not be as wild and interesting as the other LiGHTs but her contrasting presence makes them shine the brighter for it.
  • Stronger Than They Look: She is at least strong enough to deform solid metal bars with her bare hands.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite being formally released from Tiara's service for little over two years, she still remains fiercely loyal to Tiara and fully supports all her endeavors and plans as if she were still her handmaiden. It's hinted several times this may not be entirely platonic.

    Lavie

I'm the class ace! Everyone~! I love you so much 𝅘𝅥𝅮

Voiced by: Mukai Live

Country of Origin: Marlseillu
Age: 16
School Club: Cheerleading
The self-proclaimed "special class ace", Lavie is a talented athlete and witch with poor grades and inversely as much confidence in her smarts. She is the group's choreographer and dance instructor.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: She was not aware she was taking advantage of the concept of Thermal Expansion to destroy metal objects and other materials, just that fire and ice spells in quick succession worked very well for wrecking stuff.
  • An Ice Person: Is capable of freezing things with her magic.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She has the special ability to learn and dissect any dance and suss out the exact choreography after watching it once.
  • Big Eater: She's got the largest appetite out of her entire unit. She never hesitates to chow down when the opportunity presents itself, orders a hamburg steak from the cafe when they were supposed to be tracking down Rosetta (and laments being taken away from it before her first bite), and doesn't think twice about stealing food from Ashley in Episode 10. Justified as she's a very active athlete, dancer, and choreographer, likely burning it all off before it turns to fat.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: She takes care of two rabbits being kept on campus, Tom and Sherry (both female and childhood friends). In Episode 3 of the anime, Ashley specifically uses a bunny patch to fix the tear in her school uniform. Her twintails somewhat resemble floppy bunny ears, she's frequently called a "dumb bunny" by Ashley, and her backpack in Episodes 9 and 10 are bunny-shaped, complete with floppy ears.
  • Combat Medic: Aside from her incredible athletic ability she also specializes in physical reinforcement magic. Episode 10 shows she also had a bit of a demolitionist streak to her, learning how to use fire and ice magic in quick succession to destroy things easily.
  • Dumb Jock: She is highly skilled in athletics, not so much in academics in spite of all her boasting about her great grades.
  • Enemy Eats Your Lunch: Downplayed. In Episode 10, she tries to steal a sip of Ashley's drink with her straw, not realizing that it was a hot beverage, and scalding her tongue as a result.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports these in line with her more childish demeanor.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her poor academic performance, her focus on athletic ability, and magical reinforcement magic, she's still quite capable with elemental magic, being able to use fire and ice magic in quick succession to use thermal expansion to break through some iron bars.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Lavie uses what appears to be pom-poms in combat though granted she is a cheerleader and a support character in the game.
  • Insult of Endearment: "Dumb Bunny", usually used by Ashley.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Lavie is quite proud of her intelligence. As Ashley is quick to point out, she's not nearly as smart as she thinks she is; the first episode of the anime demonstrates this mostly through Lavie's limited vocabulary, consistently misusing words, and claiming she understands the meaning of others when she clearly does not.
  • Look Behind You: She distracts Salsa during a bumpball match by pointing at the sky and claiming to see a flying pig. This is enough to get the latter to lower her guard and allow the former to score an easy point.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Downplayed. In Episode 2, she orders a steak from the restaurant Ratura works at, but is dragged away by the rest of LiGHTs before she could take a bite, as they were tailing Rosetta at the time. Eight episodes later, she's still expecting the rest of the unit to compensate her for that steak.
  • Magic Dance: Her casting her Physical Reinforcement magic takes the form of a cheerleading routine and chant.
  • No Indoor Voice: Lavie seems to have no concept of keeping her thoughts to herself, blurting out things at the worst possible times. An example of this is the Our Prelude manga when she says Dir. Chloe's Red Baron nickname, "The Azure Reaper from Hell" right to her face.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Episode 9, the first time she uses a complex word correctly, the rest of the unit sans Tiara are so shocked they wonder if the trauma of being expelled from Flora Girls' Academy was too much for her. For her part, Lavie can only indignantly protest that she's fine.
  • Playing with Fire: Is capable of generating flames with her magic.
  • Power Glows: Those affected by her Physical Enhancement Magic have their hair glow in bright, electric hues. Once the effect wears off, they even fizzle out like a short-circuiting device.
  • Power-Strain Blackout: Her Physical Enhancement Magic dramatically increases the target's physical capabilities for a short period of time but after it wears off, the resulting physical strain and exhaustion hit them like a truck. In Episode 4, Rosetta used it to score her team a number of points but they ultimately ended up losing the match when she spent the rest of it on the sidelines, on her knees and unable to move.
  • Sticky Fingers: She steals the map for Sadistic☆Candy's summons from Chloe's office after discovering that latter was absent at the time. Chloe later deducts 70 points from LiGHTs for this act. She is also shown to have no qualms with stealing food from Ashley.

    Ashley

I will show you the Code of the Dortdgard Knights.

Voiced by: Iori Saeki

Country of Origin: Dortdgard
Age: 17
School Club: Craftmaking
A daughter from a family of knights, Ashley is currently studying at Flora Girls' Academy to enhance her magical ability at the behest of her father. A strong adherent to chivalry and order, she is a very serious and upright person but secretly harbors a fondness for dresses and stuffed animals. Within the group, she acts as the costume designer and creator.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Has a large collection of stuffed animals which she made herself.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Perhaps fittingly for the most physically strong and tough of her unit, Ashley has experienced no shortage of physical injury for the sake of humor, such as being hit in the jaw by lawn bowling pins in Episode 10, becoming the patient for a Meatgrinder Surgery operation in Episode 9, and passing out from lack of oxygen thanks to being stuck in an enchanted yellow-fin mackerel costume in Episode 5.
  • Magic Knight: Both in personal beliefs and in combat, Ashley is as physically strong as she is capable of harnessing her magic for battle.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: In Episode 10, she tries to hide from view by using Metallization Magic to resemble a statue of the First Witch, Flora. It fails as a passing guard easily realizes how out of place she looks and nervous sweating quickly gives her away.
  • Primal Fear: She is afraid of heights.
  • Super-Reflexes: Her magic specialty allows her to enhance her reflexes and perception to the point where everything else seems to slow down. She uses it to dodge bumpballs in Episode 3 and in Episode 10 uses it to discreetly subdue a palace guard in Bristol castle. The anime portrays it as her eyes glowing as the world around her desaturates.
  • Super-Toughness: She is able to use Metallization magic, which covers the user's entire body (plus hair) in a shell of a tough, metal-like substance to resist damage. So far, she's only used it to try to disguise herself as a statue, however.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Though is primarily training to become a knight, is quite ashamed of anyone knowing about her skills in sewing, especially her designing LiGHTs very feminine outfits and her large collection of self-made plush toys at home.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Has one of these, which fits with her tomboyish nature.

    Lynette

Eeeehhh?! Th-That's just like from that romance novel I read...

Voiced by: Yamamoto Mizuki

Country of Origin: Marlseillu
Age: 15
School Club: Library Committee
Having grown up with her book-loving grandmother, Lynnette developed a great love for stories (romance novels especially), extensive knowledge about all things involving magic and witches, and a shy, withdrawn personality. She hopes to become a more confident and outgoing person by performing with LiGHTs and acts as both their academic expert and lyricist.
  • Cute Bookworm: She loves books and the academy's extensive library is her favorite place. Romance novels are her favorite genre.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She's prone to accidents. Episode 2 depicts her walking around and reading, knocking a vase off a stand, catching the vase, only to accidentally throw it through a glass window and shatter both.
  • Forced Sleep: One of her spells is capable of inflicting this on the target.
  • In-Universe Nickname: Lyn-chan, localized as "Nettie" in English translations.
  • Magical Incantation: Due to her weak stores of mana, she has to use long magical incantations from spellbooks while the rest of the cast uses the much faster and convenient "Echo Gift" by whistling. She eventually improves enough to use a variant technique.
  • Magical Gesture: After Episode 7, Champe is presumed to have taught her the same clapping "Echo Gift" technique she uses.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's very enthusiastic about supporting romantic relationships in real-life, to say the least. She's especially fond of relationships between two women.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's not the most confident person around and prefers to spend time reading books.
  • Spell Book: Lynette uses these in combat, both to help cast her magic and as a physical reference for spells.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She initially has to read long incantations from spell books to cast magic but after Episode 6, she learns how to use the same clapping technique from Champe. It's presumed she learned this from her as Champe was the only other character who had used it so far.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her overall magical power is nothing to write home about but she has extensive knowledge of spells, witches, and how to use them. Physically, she also lacks stamina, and is easily tired out by strenuous activity.
