Humans

    Owen Gubberson
The creator of the four main puppets and the show Mortimer's Handemen. He is a skilled, traditionalist puppet-maker who seeks a way to have his show continue without compromising any of the values he sees as being important to his craft.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Given that the first time Harper meets him she tells him that she's been told the 'boss' is a "weird nutjob recluse" it's safe to say that by the time of Midnight Show none of the staff at the studio like Owen very much.
  • Body Surf: Eventually revealed to be the unwilling and unknowing victim of one, courtesy of Riley's experiments and Mortimer's plan to make Owen choose to side with them.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: His ultimate fate in a kind of irony, given that the puppets he spent so much time and effort on also lack a bottom half.
  • Insufferable Genius: He has shades of this, being a really talented puppet-maker and puppeteer but being unwilling to compromise his vision in any way if he feels it goes against his traditionalist approach to the show or the puppets. He even describes said people as "idiots" in his opening to Midnight Show, being convinced that Mortimer's Handemen's troubles are down to them causing him problems, when they're bringing up valid issues.

    Harper
A new staff member for the studio working on Mortimer's Handemen, and a self-confessed fan of the show.
  • Given Name Reveal: Harper is her middle name. Her first is Scout.
  • Nice Guy: Harper was the only person Owen had ever met that was willing to show him kindness.
  • Ship Tease: While it could be just because she looks up to Owen being a fan, her inviting him to see a movie with her after having only shortly met him suggests there might be something more on her end.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: If you subscribe to the theory that Owen's mental state when casting the spell on Mortimer is responsible for how the puppet turned out, her telling the creator of the show that she likes the "creepy edge" elements of it probably played a part in that.

    Rachel Breadstone
An executive who leaves messages for Owen on his phone.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her call telling Owen that she is pulling the plug on Mortimer's Handemen proves to be the last straw for Owen before he casts the spell to bring Mortimer to life.

    The Book Dealer
The mysterious man who sent Owen the book he uses to bring Mortimer to life. He tries many times to warn Owen to get rid of it.

Puppets

     Mortimer Handee
The star of Mortimer's Handemen, and the first puppet brought to life. The primary antagonist of the games.
  • And I Must Scream: Mortimer rebels against Owen in Midnight Show because after filming the show each day, he gets locked away in a wooden box overnight, unable to move without a human's hand inside him. The prospect of going back into the box again causes him to take over Harper's body to craft "fun" games and give the other puppets life.
  • Bad Boss: After you beat the first few stages of each puppet's room in Midnight Show, Nick Nack confesses that Mortimer has been shouting at him for things that are going wrong.
  • Big Bad: Serving as the main antagonist of the series.

     Riley Ruckus
The scientist of the group. Her logical, scientific viewpoint becomes twisted after coming to life, to the point where she rarely considers the value of any life.
  • Ambiguous Situation: She wears a doctors mask with teeth illustrated on it, implying she had some kind of accident, what it was or when it happened is anyone’s guess.
  • Mad Scientist: Unlike her counterpart in the show, Riley is a deranged scientist who performed horrific experiments on humans and puppets.

     Nick Nack
The artist and performer.
  • Implacable Man: His rooms in Midnight Show involve Owen completing his games while Nick relentlessly hunts him down.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Nick Nack knew that Daisy's Danger mode had her blackout and forget things, so he would trigger her to get her to forget things he didn't want to get out. At least until Riley's experiments meant Daisy got better control over Danger mode and remembered not only what she did in Danger mode from that point on, but everything from past times. Cue a very irate Diasy Danger threatening Nick with harm unless he was nice from then on.
  • Mad Artist: His whole persona, he's theatrical, does poetry, jokes, music, and dance. He also throws tantrums with very little provocation.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: To put it bluntly even kindly Daisy doesn't like Nick Nack due to him throwing accusations at everyone, his overall pettiness, and his temper tantrums. Thing is Mortimer abuses him constantly and while Riley tolerates him, Daisy and Mortimer either dislike him or despise him.

     Daisy Danger
The kind one who loves to cook, with a temper that turns her into Daisy Danger.
  • Attention Whore: She fully admits to Owen that being ignored makes her frustrated.
  • Berserk Button: See above, she'll go into a fit if she's ignored.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's the nicest out of all the puppets but, as shown in the secret VHS tapes she's also the most powerful and dangerous in her danger mode. When Riley allows Daisy to unlock her danger mode memories she instantly goes after Nick Nack for deliberately triggering her and bullies him into promising to be nice.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She acts like the kindly mother to Nick Nack's Mad Artist and Riley Ruckus' Mad Scientist. She also sets up bear traps in her area, and she won't hesitate to go on the warpath when chasing after you. Even Owen points out that she seems to be putting on an act just to get people to like her.
  • Stepford Smiler: She seems to be pleasant and kind compared to the other puppets but when she gets frustrated or annoyed the facade slips and she shows she's probably even more unhinged than the other puppets.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Her danger mode where she goes into Suddenly Shouting, Voice of the Legion, and she becomes devious to boot.

     Roscoe
Riley's faithful dog who requires two puppeteers. Becomes a twisted monster after being brought to life.

     Scout
The puppet chosen to control the player character of Hello Puppets. When they don't overtake the will and soul of them, they have to work together with them to escape the studio.
