    Female Students

Clair Voyant

Ultimate Medium

The protagonist. A young medium with the ability to communicate with the dead, who sees it as her duty to help ghosts and spirits with unfinished business to help them pass on to the next life. She survives the final trial and escapes into the real world with the other survivors.

  • Ambiguously Gay: It's been hinted throughout the main story that Clair seems to swing the other way: She is perpetually left awestruck and flabbergasted when seeing her female classmates (specifically Mary and Karin) in their swimsuits during the pool party in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, there are also hints that she has a crush on Mary as indicated from the way she talks or thinks about her, as well as her dejected reaction when Mary expresses her disinterest in finding a relationship. Outright confirmed in Ace's last Free-Time-Event where she admits not being interested in boys on a romantic level after being hugely complimented by the latter.
  • Berserk Button: Calling her/her talents a fraud or bringing up her short height.
  • Declaration of Protection: Makes one to Mary at the start of the killing game after seeing how frightened the latter is and after expressing her own concerns. Suffice to say, this makes Mary's death in Chapter 3 hit that much harder for her especially since Mary killed herself in order to protect Clair from being the blackened.
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • In Chapter 3: as soon as her poisoned arrow trap starts coming into the equation, she starts believing herself to be the one to have killed Mary and starts calling for the others to vote her guilty. Then there's the reveal about the true circumstances behind Mary's death..."
    • In Chapter 6: she (along with the rest of the survivors) goes through this when Dilan reveals to them that not only are their friends truly dead, but also that they have no more place in the real world due to the atrocities they've caused and the deaths of their other friends and loved ones. Thankfully Mary snaps her out of it, leading to her Heroic Second Wind.
  • Idiot Hair: Has an "ahoge" as per Danganronpa protagonist tradition. Paige even tells her that this trope is what "ahoge" means much to her un-amusement.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames herself for the events of Chapter 3; citing how her irrational behaviour during the trial almost got the rest of her classmates killed and how her poisoned arrow trap ended up leading to the circumstances leading to Mary's death.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Clair Voyant, or clairvoyant befitting the supernatural nature of her talent.
  • Nice Girl: Clair is always willing to lend a helping hand/ear to all of her classmates and lift their spirits up, which endears her to the rest of her classmates.
  • Older Than She Looks: Is actually a teenaged high-schooler like the rest of her classmates even if her appearance fits more of someone many years younger.
  • The Napoleon: Despite being the same age as her fellow classmates, Clair is only a mere4'5 making her the shortest out of all her classmates. Naturally this leads to the subject matter of her height being quite the sensitive topic for her.
  • Ship Tease: She has quite a lot of these with Mary due to how closely they bonded until the latter's death.: In Chapter 1, Clair allows Mary to sleep in her room when the latter couldn't sleep due to the her worries about the killing game (with Clair even offering her bed while she slept on the floor). In Chapter 2, Clair suddenly becomes flustered when she sees Mary in her swimsuit not unlike Keaton's reaction to Karin in a bikini. In Chapter 3, Clair even asks her subtly on what she would do if someone had a crush on her and is remotely dissapointed when Mary tells her how she's not looking for a relationship. Then there is the the tragic circumstances that led to Mary's death in the first place where Mary chooses to die via breaking the schools instead of succumbing to the poison that would have made Clair the blackened - a reveal that devastates Clair greatly.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Clair ultimately remains the primary POV character of the story; for the first three chapters, she doesn't exactly contribute much to investigations nor take charge during class trials with Flint, Sue and Chance taking up those mantles instead. No longer the case Chapter 4 onwards where she finally does take up the mantle.
  • Sweet Tooth: Her character bio mentions how much she loves ice cream.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starting from Chapter 4 onwards, she becomes more cooperative in investigations and more deductive and reasoning in trials to the point she can head them on her own.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Collects items that belong to her deceased classmates as mementos. Suffice to say, her collection gradually increases as the story progresses and as more and more students drop dead.
  • Willing Channeler: Is able to channel spirits as part of her talent, however Monokuma's interventions prevent her from doing so throughout the killing game until Chapter 4 where she channels Terra Pist as part of Chance's last request. Chapter 6 reveals that the reason she has been unable to channel her deceased classmates all this time is because they were never really dead, as the story actually takes place inside a simulation created by an adjusted version of the Neo World Progream. And it is only until after Dilan kills them for real via disintegrating their minds that she is able to use her talent to its fullest.

Mary Hart

Ultimate Nun

A devout believer of her respective religion always willing to be kind and helpful towards everyone she meets. She is the culprit and one of the two victims of Chapter 3, accidentally killing Maple by pushing her off the edge. She then ends up committing suicide via breaking Monokuma's rules leading to her being shot repeatedly by Gatling guns just before she succumbed to poison that would have made Clair the blackened instead.

  • Accidental Murder: Her murder of Maple falls under this: As she only pushed Maple off the edge as an act of self-defense. Unfortunately there was nothing to break Maple's fall, thus causing the latter's death.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Returns in spirit to snap Clair out of her Despair Event Horizon in Chapter 6.
  • Defiant to the End: [[spoiler: When Monokuma catches wind of her plans to kill herself, he tries to rile her up into giving up hope, only for Mary to retort back at him with her own faith...something that actually upsets Monokuma.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Commits suicide by breaking Monokuma's rules instead of dying from Clair's poisoned arrow in order to prevent the latter from being the blackened.
  • Nice Girl: Mary is always willing to extend a hand of kindness to everyone, regardless of who they are or what they did. Case in point; she easily forgave Keaton and Eva for trying to frame her as Miles' murderer, and held no ill will to the other students when they started distrusting her due to believing she was the traitor.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Clair. Her death is what ultimately pushes Clair to step up and become more active in opposing Monokuma and the killing game.

Karin Taker

Ultimate Maid

A maid who is skilled with a variety of different tasks: from cleaning, cooking, ironing and childcare. Due to her beautiful looks, kind and friendly personality, and her dedication to her work; she is among the most talked about of the Ultimates. She is the culprit of Chapter 2, having poisoned Miles by accident via a soup laced with potassium cyanide that was intended for Mary.

  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Hair Of Gold Heart Of G Old: Has short blonde hair, and is among the kindest and friendliest characters in the cast.
  • The Lost Lenore: Becomes this for Keaton after her execution. Her death causes him to temporarily suffer from a Heroic BSoD in Chapter 3, though he manages to snap out of it and vows to become a better person for her sake.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Karin Taker, as in "caretaker".
  • Nice Girl: Has a very kind and gentle personality and is always looking after the rest of her classmates.
  • Team Mom: Between her, Chance and Eva; she fulfills this role the most, being the one responsible for everyone's healthcare and is considered a pillar of emotional support for everyone else.

Eva Genes

Ultimate Forensic Scientist

A child prodigy with genius-level IQ whose made multiple advances in the field of forensic science. When it comes to the matter of the killing game: Eva takes it upon herself to become one of the three leaders of the class alongside Chance and Karin in order to ensure everyone escapes the killing game alive. She survives the final trial and escapes into the real world with the other survivors.

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Becomes the POV character for a brief segment of Chapter 6's investigation.
  • Character Development: Learns to be more openly kind and empathetic towards her fellow classmates as the story progresses.
  • Child Prodigy: Was already being scouted by several colleges as early as the age of six.
  • Expy/Shout-Out: With her talent, her fondness for sweets (such as Snackoos, which she is seen snacking on in Chapter 1), and her initially grumpy personality; she is one to Ema Skye.
  • Insufferable Genius: She never misses a chance to flaunt about her superior intellect towards others. Gradually tones this down later on after her Character Development.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her grumpy personality and intolerance to everyone's behavior, Eva still volunteered to become one of the group's leaders because she believed they were all innocent and didn't deserve death even promising to escape the killing game with no more murders.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Wears one of these, only fitting of a forensic scientist.
  • Statuesque Stunner: At 5'9, Eva is the tallest out of all the female students and is on par with/taller than a good number of her fellow male classmates as well.
  • Sweet Tooth: Has a large fondness for sweets, and can be frequently seen either snacking on them or taking an interest in them.
  • Teen Genius: And you can bet she won't let you forget it.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Greatly softens up towards everyone else as the story progresses. Case in point; during Chapter 5's investigation, she even apologizes to Clair on how she called her a fraud back at the start of the killing game due to her not believing in ghosts and spirits.

Maple Woods

Ultimate Arboriculturist

She is one of the victims of Chapter 3, having been pushed off an edge and onto her death by Mary.

  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Maple is a type or tree, while Woods refers to a forest of trees.
  • Nice Girl: She genuinely believes that no one could commit murder or that anyone among them could be a traitor. Due to the tense atmosphere brought on in Chapter 3 though, she attempts to kill Mary, who she suspects to be the traitor, and frame Clair for the crime in the hopes that it'll end the arguing.

Paige Turner

Ultimate Graphic Novelist

She is the victim of Chapter 1.

Sue Yu

Ultimate Lawyer

She is the main investigator/trial-header in Chapter 2, the traitor working for Monokuma, and the initially-assumed victim of Chapter 5 only to be revealed later during the class trial that she was posing as Flint posing as Robin as part of her and Flint's gamble to thwart the mastermind..

  • Amoral Attorney: Her Free Time Events and the story itself mention that her critics accuse her as this due to her prowess and accomplishments for her young age. Subverted however in that Sue is anything but.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different/A Day in the Limelight: She is the main investigator/trial-header of Chapter 2 and the first half of Chapter 4's investigation.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Expy/Shout-Out: To Phoenix Wright, with a sneaky reference being made to him being her inspiration in her introduction, her bringing up the ladder/stepladder debate common in the series, she even mentions pointing and shouting "objection".
  • Childhood Friend: To Joe.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Sue Yu as in sue you, perfect for the Ultimate Lawyer.

    Male Students

Drew Shade

Ultimate Artist

Born in Paris, France, Drew's works of art have been so well-renowned that they are placed in art museums all around the world. He is the victim of Chapter 4, having been killed and double-crossed by Chance after the latter realizes he had fallen to despair and was plotting a murder himself.

  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Nervous Wreck: Tends to act like this at times, even before the arrival of Monokuma.
  • Ship Tease: There's a bit with him and Maple. He calls her his muse and asks to paint her in Chapter 1 giving them alibis for Paige's murder. The two are relatively close, and after her death in Chapter 3 is when he starts acting colder towards the others.

Flint Hunter

Ultimate Marksman

He is the main investigator/trial-header in Chapter 1, and the initially-assumed killer of Chapter 5 only to be revealed to be the true victim having committed suicide via Monokuma's special poison as part of his and Sue's gambit to thwart the mastermind.

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different/A Day in the Limelight: He is the main investigator/trial-header of Chapter 1.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Jerkass: Tends to behave like this at times, with him expressing little sympathy for the culprits (including the attempted ones) due to his belief that all criminals are evil. He also tends to be controlling towards Leo, outright expressing his distaste towards his friendship with Joe after his behaviors in the first trial unsettle him.

Leon Tamer

Ultimate Animal Trainer

He survives the final trial and escapes into the real world with the other survivors.

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Becomes the POV character for a brief segment of Chapter 6's investigation.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: His friendships with Flint, Sue, and Joe ultimately lead him to stand with the survivors, with him saying that getting close to them allowed him to move past the blame he cast on everyone for his adopted mother's death and reject Dilan's proposal.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He loves animals, and manages to befriend one in every new area they find themselves in.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Comes under suspicion in the third case since he already knew Mary was dead before the Monokuma File was distributed despite not being near the scene of the crime.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Leo, which he prefers to be called by, is a word that means lion, while Tamer is a reference to his talent as an animal trainer.

  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He tries to flirt with the girls and makes suggestive comments, but none of the girls have any interest in him.

Miles Swift

Ultimate Marathon Runner

He is the victim of Chapter 2.

Keaton Patches

Ultimate Sewer

He survives the final trial and escapes into the real world with the other survivors.

  • The Big Guy: At 6'4, Keaton is the tallest out of all of the students, and that's not also factoring his hot-headed and brash personality.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: According to Monokuma; not only has he never made it to the final trial in the previous killing games, but he always died around the fourth trial as a meta joke to how the big, muscled characters always die around the fourth chapter. Averted in the killing game's final cycle itself where not only does he make it to the final trial, but he also goes on to survive the killing game.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: His crush on Karin stems from this; citing how while everyone feared and shunned him for his behavior and background, she was the only one to openly express kindness and open her hand of friendship to him. This makes the reveal that Karin was Miles' murderer that much more painful; as the circumstances leading to her being the blackened only happened because of his original plan to murder someone and graduate.
  • Face of a Thug: While Keaton does look like your ordinary punk and acts like it, deep down he's really a nice, good-natured guy especially after he softens up.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Courtesy of his talent, in addition he's also a pretty good cook.
  • Ship Tease: With Karin. His crush on her becomes very obvious in Chapter 2 when he tries to ask her out on a picnic date and he even has memories of them being close. It's even hinted that his feelings might not be so one-sided.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Overtime he becomes less antagonistic and confrontational with the others and becomes more openly supportive and friendly towards them. Case in point: Compare his and Clair's interactions from the start of the story to later chapters.

Joe Kuhr

Ultimate Clown

Chance Clover

Ultimate Lucky Student

He is the main investigator/trial-header of Chapter 3, and the culprit of Chapter 4 having killed Drew after seeing the latter had fallen into despair and was planning to murder.

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different/A Day in the Limelight: He is the main investigator/trial-header of Chapter 3 and in one section of Chapter 4's trial when Clair is unwilling to label him as the culprit in order to incite her to do so.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns in spirit to aid the survivors in the final trial against Dilan.
  • Meaningful Name[/]Punny Name: Chance Clover, referring to his talent as the Ultimate Lucky Student. Then there's his real name "Ian Cognito" a.k.a. incognito referencing what he's been doing all this time.
  • Older Than He Looks: Despite looking like a teenager, Ian in real life is already about in his thirties.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Always wears a pair of sunglasses on him, even when indoors.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Compared to his old self, Ian took a lot of these by the time of the story. Dilan notes that even after a hundred killing games of the other students killing one another, he never once lost hope in that they could be rehabilitated.

    Other Characters

The Masked Crow/Robin Yu

  • Expy/Shout-Out: To the Yatagarasu, as both have similar motivations in only stealing information being hidden by corrupt individuals instead of typical thief faire, along with having a crow motif.
