    Kumagishi Chouan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chouan.png
Kumagishi Chouan is a counterfeiter who was arrested for making counterfeit money, but also made many counterfeit pieces of art. When Hijikata's Group and Sugimoto's Group discover that the 7th Division has had fake skins made by Edogai, the two seek Chouan's expertise in order to distinguish the fake skins from the real one. Although Chouan is supposedly held prisoner at Kabato prison, Sugimoto finds him hidden in an Ainu village among other criminal escapees.
  • Affably Evil: Chouan is a criminal but he only creates counterfeits and is otherwise a down-to-earth man who was preoccupied with feeding himself, hence his crimes.
  • Dramatic Irony: Chouan's last thoughts are wishing that he had made art that had truly changed someone's life. It turns out that he had – his doodle of a nun is what turned Shiraishi into the Escape King.
  • Not Quite Dead: Officially, Chouan died during an escape attempt. However, he's alive and well, disguised and hiding in an Ainu village. Well, at least, until he gets killed soon afterward.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Chouan is a specialist at counterfeiting, an activity requiring skills in art and chemistry. He naturally wears glasses.
  • Terrible Artist: In Shiraishi's flashback, Chouan was asked to draw a picture of someone, but the end result looks like a child's sketch, contrasting his reputation. It turns out the person in question resembles the drawing exactly, to Shiraishi's astonishment.

    Nakazawa Tatsuya
A yakuza, expert chou-han dealer, and Kiichirou Wakayama's lover.

    O-Gin: "The Viper"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ogin.png
A murderer who met Keiichirou Sakamoto and became his lover and partner-in-crime. Although she is not part of the Abashiri convicts, she and Keiichirou are inseparable.
  • Animal Motif: The Mamushi Viper, from which her name is derived. She also has a tattoo of the snake on her body and her habit of stabbing people in the neck also alludes to the viper.
  • Bank Robbery: Her main activity after she gets together with Keiichirou. She is also a serial killer but her bank and post office robberies are more famous.
  • Delinquent Hair: Wears a pompadour.
  • Evil Matriarch: It is revealed O-Gin has had a baby with Keiichirou, and continues to commit robberies and murders with her baby on her back.
  • Improbable Weapon User: O-Gin uses a long awl to stab people in the neck and kill them unexpectedly.
  • In the Back: She presents herself as an ill woman so people would carry her on her back. She then uses her awl to stab the foramen magnum, the one opening of the skull that lets the spine through, and scramble their brains. It's noted to be cleaner than a conventional neck stab and every other vital organ is protected by flesh and bones, so the foramen magnum allows her to easily kill men much more stronger than she is and not have to clean herself.
  • Last Breath Bullet: Her decapitated head somehow bites into Tsurumi's boot as a last act of spite.
  • Last Kiss: She kisses Keiichirou one last time before he dies, and she joins him in death soon after.
  • Laughing Mad: Laughs wildly as she stabs a gambling hall guard to death.
  • Makeup Is Evil: O-Gin wears noticeable amounts of lipstick and eyeshadow.
  • Off with His Head!: O-Gin is decapitated by Koito.
  • Outlaw Couple: With Keiichirou.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: She begins to use shotguns after she and Keiichirou take up ban robbery.
  • Tattooed Crook: O-Gin possesses a long snake tattoo weaving around her body.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: She passes as an ill woman laying on the side of roads to lure men into carrying her on their back, so she can stab them in the neck.

    Shirosuke Inudou

Voiced by: Takaya Hashi (Japanese), Mark Stoddard (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img000013.png
The third (and former) warden of Kabato prison, who was the place where Hijikata was previously detained and where Chouan is imprisoned. He has a deep grudge against Hijikata and kept him alive for decades in the hopes of breaking his spirit. He is currently working at Abashiri prison and prepares himself to "welcome" both the Abashiri convicts and the 7th Division.
  • Beard of Evil: Inudou possesses a thick square beard.
  • Best Served Cold: Inudou's brother was killed by the Shinsengumi during the battle of Hakodate. Having his hands on the vice-commander, Hijikata, he spent years trying to break his spirit before he could execute him but Hijikata never broke.
  • Chained Heat: Inudou chains himself to Hijikata, having trained to wield his sword with his other hand tied to get the upper hand during their confrontation.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Despite being an accomplished swordsman and coming from a family of samurai, Inudou uses every trick he has to get the advantage against Hijikata and Anji, separating them and attacking Anji by surprise, then faking the death and burdening Hijikata with a chain.
  • Death Glare: One of his most striking features is the menacing glare of his squinted eyes.
  • Faking the Dead: Does this briefly after almost killing Anji to fake a mutual kill, and take Hijikata by surprise.
  • A Handful for an Eye: During their fights, Hijikata secretly gathers some blood in his palm and tosses it at Inudou's eye, giving him a crucial opening.
  • Off with His Head!: After his duel to the death with Hijikata, the loser (Shirosuke) requests, and is granted, to be finished off with a full-on traditional samurai beheading.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: He has this sentiment, given that he is the only experienced commander in his prison and all of his underlings are just some men were given a gun and a uniform to increase the numbers of defenders.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Inudou is nicknamed the Demon Warden, and kept Hijikata locked away for twenty years to crush his spirit. We also learn that he exploits prisoners in a sulfur mine, which has caused many of them to go blind.

    Yamada
Yamada is the troupe leader of the Yamada Circus troupe, taking his circus overseas to perform. He meets Sugimoto's group in the town of Toyohara, Sakhalin, and agrees to let them perform.
  • Abuse Mistake: When his protégé, Choukichi, steals a bag from Sugimoto's group, Yamada slashes the boy's cheek with a sword as atonement. He quickly explains that it is only a magic trick but not in time before Sugimoto socks him.
  • Faking the Dead: His greatest magic trick is to fake performing harakiri on himself, only to revive himself because he splashed his body with holy water. The trick is that dried red ink is hidden inside the blunt katana, so when he scrapes the sword against him wet body, it only gives the impression of bleeding.
  • Hidden Depths: Yamada looks like a typical circus troupe leader, but he also was a former soldier in the Japanese Army. He also works as a spy for the Japanese government and is the target of an assassination attempt.

    Sofia Golden Hand

Voiced by: Kimiko Saito (Japanese), Emily Fajardo (English)

A Russian noblewoman turned revolutionary leader who was friends with Wilk and Kiroranke during their youth.
  • Action Girl: As a revolutionary leader, she's more than capable of taking care of herself in a fight.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She confessed her love to Wilk at parting, but he later married Asirpa's mother instead of loving her back.
  • Blue Blood: She was a Russian noblewoman, but she threw all the luxury that came with it away to fight as a revolutionary.
  • Braids of Action: She has worn a long braid in the back since she became a revolutionary leader in her youth. Of course, she's more than capable of taking care of herself in a fight.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: She wore a tight bun in the back before she left behind the life of a noblewoman. As a revolutionary leader, however, she replaced her bun with a long braid.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Rips open her blouse whenever she gets into a fight.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: She always wears one long braid in the back since youth.
  • It's All My Fault: When a stray bullet killed Olga, Sofia blamed herself for the baby's death, deciding that she would rather continue fighting as a revolutionary than pursue her own happiness as a woman. When she was taken as a hostage along with Asirpa by Tsurumi, the latter revealed that she didn't fire the stray shot, Wilk did.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: She's a fat middle-aged woman with wrinkled fair skin who wears one long braid in the back. However, in her youth, she had smooth fair skin, a slender build, a lipstick, and the same but longer braid. Nonetheless, Kiroranke considers her present self a beauty because he's a Chubby Chaser.
  • The Lad-ette: Enjoys getting into fistfights and eating vodka-soaked caviar by the handful.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Like Sophia Perovskaya, Sofia was a Russian noblewoman who, as a revolutionary, helped orchestrate the successful assassination of Tsar Alexander II. She is also known as "Sofia Golden Hand", a nickname inspired by Sofia Ivanovna Blyuvshtein, better known as Sonya Golden Hand.
  • Red Baron: She is also known as "Sofia Golden Hand", a nickname inspired by Sofia Ivanovna Blyuvshtein, better known as Sonya Golden Hand.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Played With. Sofia stays behind to Hold the Line against Tsurumi and his men alongside her remaining forces whilst Sugimoto and Aspira flee the fort with the land deed that guarantees several swathes of land for the Ainu, but finds herself unable to fire upon Tsurumi because of her Guilt Complex towards Fina and Olga's deaths, even after knowing the truth that Wilk was actually responsible, still seeing him as 'Mr Hasegawa' rather than the Ax-Crazy expression he has as he fires upon her and mortally wounds her. Bleeding out, Sofia digs out the photo of her, Wilk and Kiroranke one last time, apologising to Tsurumi under the belief that their deaths were all because they visited his studio. Tsurumi, in sympathy for her sorrow over his family's demise, assures her that he forgives her... before putting three bullets through the image of Wilk on the photograph and into her chest, repeating that he forgives 'her'.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Deconstructed. Once she finds out Tsurumi is the 'Mr Hasegawa' who took her, Wilk and Kinoranke in and whose wife and child were killed in the shootout between them and the Russain secret police, she understandably becomes distraught and consumed by her long-standing Guilt Complex towards their deaths, especially after seeing how warped and insane Tsurumi's become in the intervening years. Even after finding out that Wilk was actually the one that fired the stray shot that killed them both, she's very morose when seeing how spiteful and antagonistic Tsurumi's become towards Aspira in Wilk's place. When she stays behind at the fort to Hold the Line and allow Aspira to flee with the land deed, she has a clear shot at Tsurumi, but seeing his old 'Hasegawa' personality looking at her, causing her to hesitate long enough for Tsurumi to fatally wound her with a demonic smile on his face. No matter what kind of man Tsurumi used to be, his current self is nothing more than an insane, calculating killer, and hesitating for any reason at putting him down will just give him to opportunity to kill you in turn without remorse or gratitude for your moral fetters.
