* SympathyForTheDevil: {{Deconstructed}}. Once she finds out [[spoiler:Tsurumi is the 'Mr Hasegawa' who took her, Wilk and Kinoranke in and whose wife and child were killed in the shootout between them and the Russain secret police, she understandably becomes distraught and consumed by her long-standing GuiltComplex towards their deaths, especially after seeing how warped and [[CrazySane insane]] Tsurumi's become in the intervening years. Even after finding out that Wilk was actually the one that fired the stray shot that killed them both, she's very morose when seeing how spiteful and antagonistic Tsurumi's become towards Aspira [[SinsOfTheFather in Wilk's place]]. When she stays behind at the fort to HoldTheLine and allow Aspira to flee with the land deed, she has a clear shot at Tsurumi, but seeing his old 'Hasegawa' personality looking at her, causing her to hesitate long enough for Tsurumi to fatally wound her with a [[SlasherSmile demonic smile on his face]]. No matter what kind of man Tsurumi used to be, his current self is nothing more than an insane, calculating killer, and hesitating for any reason at putting him down will just give him to opportunity to kill you in turn without remorse or gratitude for your moral fetters]].

Bleeding out, Sofia digs out the photo of her, Wilk and Kiroranke one last time, apologising to Tsurumi under the belief that their deaths were all because they visited his studio. [[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chouan.png]]
Kumagishi Chouan is a counterfeiter who was arrested for making counterfeit money, but also made many counterfeit pieces of art. When Hijikata's Group and Sugimoto's Group discover that the 7th Division has had fake skins made by Edogai, the two seek Chouan's expertise in order to distinguish the fake skins from the real one. Although Chouan is supposedly held prisoner at Kabato prison, Sugimoto finds him hidden in an Ainu village among other criminal escapees.
----
* AffablyEvil: Chouan is a criminal but he only creates counterfeits and is otherwise a down-to-earth man who was preoccupied with feeding himself, hence his crimes.
* DramaticIrony: [[spoiler:Chouan's last thoughts are wishing that he had made art that had truly changed someone's life. It turns out that he had – his doodle of a nun is what turned Shiraishi into the Escape King.]]
* NotQuiteDead: Officially, Chouan died during an escape attempt. However, he's alive and well, disguised and hiding in an Ainu village. [[spoiler:Well, at least, until he gets killed soon afterward.]]
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Chouan is a specialist at counterfeiting, an activity requiring skills in art and chemistry. He naturally wears glasses.
* TerribleArtist: In Shiraishi's flashback, Chouan was asked to draw a picture of someone, but the end result looks like a child's sketch, contrasting his reputation. [[spoiler:It turns out the person in question resembles the drawing exactly, to Shiraishi's astonishment.]]

[[folder:O-Gin: "The Viper"]]
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ogin.png]]

----
* AnimalMotif: The Mamushi Viper, from which her name is derived. She also has a tattoo of the snake on her body and her habit of stabbing people in the neck also alludes to the viper.

* EvilMatriarch: It is revealed O-Gin has had a baby with Keiichirou, and continues to commit robberies and murders with her baby on her back.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: O-Gin uses a long awl to stab people in the neck and kill them unexpectedly.
* InTheBack: She presents herself as an ill woman so people would carry her on her back. She then uses her awl to stab the foramen magnum, the one opening of the skull that lets the spine through, and scramble their brains. It's noted to be cleaner than a conventional neck stab and every other vital organ is protected by flesh and bones, so the foramen magnum allows her to easily kill men much more stronger than she is and not have to clean herself.
* LastBreathBullet: Her decapitated head somehow bites into Tsurumi's boot as a last act of spite.
* LastKiss: She kisses Keiichirou one last time before he dies, and she joins him in death soon after.

[[folder:Shirosuke Inudou]]
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/TakayaHashi (Japanese), Mark Stoddard (English)
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img000013.png]]
The third (and former) warden of Kabato prison, who was the place where Hijikata was previously detained and where Chouan is imprisoned. He has a deep grudge against Hijikata and kept him alive for decades in the hopes of breaking his spirit. He is currently working at Abashiri prison and prepares himself to "welcome" both the Abashiri convicts and the 7th Division.
----
* BeardOfEvil: Inudou possesses a thick square beard.
* BestServedCold: Inudou's brother was killed by the Shinsengumi during the battle of Hakodate. Having his hands on the vice-commander, Hijikata, he spent years trying to break his spirit before he could execute him but Hijikata never broke.
* ChainedHeat: Inudou chains himself to Hijikata, having trained to wield his sword with his other hand tied to get the upper hand during their confrontation.
* CombatPragmatist: Despite being an accomplished swordsman and coming from a family of samurai, Inudou uses every trick he has to get the advantage against Hijikata and Anji, separating them and attacking Anji by surprise, then faking the death and burdening Hijikata with a chain.
* DeathGlare: One of his most striking features is the menacing glare of his squinted eyes.
* FakingTheDead: Does this briefly after almost killing Anji to fake a mutual kill, and take Hijikata by surprise.
* AHandfulForAnEye: During their fights, Hijikata secretly gathers some blood in his palm and tosses it at Inudou's eye, giving him a crucial opening.
* OffWithHisHead: After his duel to the death with Hijikata, the loser ([[spoiler:Shirosuke]]) requests, and is granted, to be finished off with a full-on traditional samurai beheading.
* SurroundedByIdiots: He has this sentiment, given that he is the only experienced commander in his prison and all of his underlings are just some men were given a gun and a uniform to increase the numbers of defenders.
* WardensAreEvil: Inudou is nicknamed the Demon Warden, and kept Hijikata locked away for twenty years to crush his spirit. We also learn that he exploits prisoners in a sulfur mine, which has caused many of them to go blind.

[[folder:Yamada]]

----
* AbuseMistake: When his protégé, Choukichi, steals a bag from Sugimoto's group, Yamada slashes the boy's cheek with a sword as atonement. He quickly explains that it is only a magic trick but not in time before Sugimoto socks him.
* FakingTheDead: His greatest magic trick is to fake performing harakiri on himself, only to revive himself because he splashed his body with holy water. The trick is that dried red ink is hidden inside the blunt katana, so when he scrapes the sword against him wet body, it only gives the impression of bleeding.
* HiddenDepths: Yamada looks like a typical circus troupe leader, but he also was a former soldier in the Japanese Army. [[spoiler:He also works as a spy for the Japanese government and is the target of an assassination attempt]].
