Bowser's Troop

    Bowser

Bowser

  • Affably Evil: While not super strong, Bowser does seem to display some signs of this. He seems genuinely happy with Mario when he mentions the Super Sushi that could help him take down Godzilla. After he defeats him, he decides to not capture Princess Peach as he believes he is too tired at the moment to go ahead and genuinely thinks he had a good fight. It does come off as oddly nice for Bowser, even if he does promise he's only taking a one-month break.
  • Anti-Hero: He joins Mario's side only so he can take down Godzilla, not necessarily because he wants to save the Mushroom City and everything else from total destruction.
  • Benevolent Boss: Despite clearly showing his aggression toward his minions when they fail him, Bowser does seem genuinely upset when his troops' ships are destroyed by Godzilla. He also seems to genuinely honor Hal and Jeff for their working hard on their latest task as well, promising to pay them fairly from now on, and more likely than not treat them better.
  • Berserk Button: After waiting too long for his minions to return to him, Bowser does present a bit of rage when they return, telling Jeff, Hal, and Steve to spit out what Mario's plans are. Once he finds out, he seems visibly angered, as he sees this as a cowardly way to fight him. This results in him releasing a fiery rage after they leave. Thankfully, he does cool down after this.
  • Enhanced Punch: In his regular form, Bowser manages to punch Godzilla across the face, sending him tumbling.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Bowser may be the evil Koopa King who intends to rule over all, but when Godzilla comes to start destroying anything in his path, Bowser goes in to fight him just so he can show him who the real King of the Monsters is.
  • Noble Demon: Played with. He allows Mario and Princess Peach to go free after beating Godzilla, which may seem like a bit of an honorable thing for him to do after he gave a good fight against Godzilla. However, at the same time, Bowser also states that he wants to rest for at least a month given that he feels that he is currently too tired to capture Peach yet again.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While he does come to take down Godzilla, he makes it pretty clear to Mario that he is only fighting the King of the Monsters because he wants to settle the score with him, not because he wants to save anyone.
  • There Can Be Only One: Bowser's motivation to fight Godzilla, wanting to prove that he is the mightiest monster king in the land.
  • Villainous Crush: Implied at least. It seems to be heavily indicated that Bowser does genuinely care about Princess Peach and doesn't want to just marry her out of power, getting excited whenever he feels like she is talking about him and refers to her affectionately as his "dear princess".

    Jeff and Hal

Jeff the Goomba and Hal the Koopa

  • Big "SHUT UP!": Jeff to Hal after he reminds him he is a turtle, not a dog.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The latter with Steve. Where Steve is a mostly happy and cheerier minion of Bowser, Jeff, and Hal clearly are annoyed with him and the entire fact that Bowser continues sending them out on missions, as they feel that they are continuing to fail him.
  • Harmless Villain: Both have been assigned by Bowser on numerous missions, yet have repeatedly continued to fail him. This leads to the two often bickering a lot about what to do.
  • Surprise Jump: Hal immediately after Steve appears behind him to say hi.

    Steve

Steve the Piranha Plant

  • Affably Evil: While calling him evil is a bit of a stretch, he does always present himself as a friendly piranha plant who just wants to help Bowser and his minions.
  • Luminescent Blush: Has this when Jeff and Hal ask for him to help them just this once to spy on Mario.
  • Token Good Teammate: Played with. Unlike Bowser, Jeff, and Hal, Steve does seem to be the only member of Bowser's onscreen minions who isn't exactly outright malicious, but actually more friendly than anything. That also said, he does still show loyalty to Bowser and is willing to help him in his schemes, so calling him completely good may be a bit of a stretch.

Mario's Group

    Mario

Mario

  • The Cape: Wears one after using his feather power-up to stop Wario and Waluigi from robbing a jewelry store.
  • The Hero: Mario is the protector of the Mushroom Kingdom who has saved Princess Peach numerous times in the past. The reason why he even goes to the Mushroom City to begin with is to get the Super Sushi from Professor E. Gadd, seeing it as his way to beat Bowser and stop him once and for all.
  • Instant Waking Skills: Literally jumps on top of Luigi's stomach to wake him up. Boy, does it work...
  • Rambunctious Italian: Both he and Luigi have this like always. They both have thick Italian accents and enjoy spaghetti, not to mention mumble the phrase “mamma mia” every so often. There is also the entire fact he thinks that the Super Sushi would probably make great spaghetti sauce.

    Luigi

Luigi

  • Butt-Monkey: Much like his original counterpart, he does tend to end up being played more for laughs than his older brother, tending to be the butt of a joke at times.
  • Cowardly Lion: Much like his original counterpart, Luigi tends to be frightened and gets paranoid quite easily. In fairness, however, his cowardness can be a bit understandable given the entire fact Godzilla is running around reigning havoc across the Mushroom City.
  • Hypocrite: He is clearly annoyed by the entire fact that Mario cannot get his mind off of eating the Super Sushi not just because he wants to defeat Bowser, but also because he thought it sounded good and would make good spaghetti sauce. This is kinda ironic, considering...
  • One-Track-Minded Hunger: He always seems to have his mind on food, given that the main thing that motivated him to even get out of bed was Mario telling him that Peach would likely not make cannelloni. When Mario is in the middle of telling Peach his plan to defeat Bowser, all he really seems to think about at this moment is food.
Luigi: Uhm… we're not going to have breakfast this morning? Hello~?!
  • Rambunctious Italian: Alongside his brother Mario, who both have thick Italian accents and a taste for spaghetti. It really should say something when the only thing that fully gets out of bed is cannelloni.

    Princess Peach

Princess Peach

    Yoshi

Yoshi

  • Does Not Speak Common: Yoshi appears to be the only character in the cast who does not speak English, given that every time he actually has something to say, it does not match the subtitles. Usually, it is just random sounds or just Yoshi saying "Yoshi".
  • Jaw Drop: Yoshi's reaction to Mario saying that he wanted to try the Super Sushi as spaghetti sauce.

    Toad

Toad

Others

    Godzilla

Godzilla

  • Adaptational Villainy: Unlike most versions of Godzilla, this version seems to be nothing more than a monster who just revels in destruction. Even Princess Peach describes him as just the most heartless monster out there.
  • Big Bad: Godzilla is the main threat Mario and Bowser have to deal with in the film, as Mario knows he needs to stop him before everything in the Mushroom City is destroyed and Bowser wants to just simply make sure he staples his place as Koopa King.
  • Breath Weapon: Much like most of his incarnations, he breathes deadly blue flames that was laid waste to many. After transforming though, he starts breathing flames of red.
  • Death Glare: Godzilla gives this to the military after they begin attacking him, immediately before incinerating them with his fiery breath.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Godzilla is a giant monster who arrived in the Mushroom City, destroying basically anything his path. While Bowser may be his opponent and eventual killer, Bowser is still the evil King of the Koopas who wants to rule over all and has kidnapped Princess Peach numerous times in the past. The only reason he is even fighting Godzilla is just to simply show him that he is stronger, not that he wants to actually save anyone.
  • Eye Awaken: Literally the final shot of the film is Godzilla doing this. While one may think he died from his injuries, the King of the Monsters seems to prove otherwise.
  • Freudian Excuse: While briefly mentioned, it is said that Godzilla first awoke after the United States bombed Hiroshima in 1945. The radiation mutated him and as Bowser points out, caused him to suffer. It's really hard to at least say that it becomes slightly understandable why he hates humanity so much.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While the film mostly has a light-hearted tone similar to the nature of the Mario games, every time Godzilla appears, nothing but pure terror is presented. He truly does make the film darker every time he is onscreen.
  • Kaiju: It's literally Godzilla, a hundred-foot-tall reptilian monster that breathes flames and destroys cities. He is probably one of the most iconic Kaijus in fiction.
  • Nuclear Mutant: He was literally mutated by radiation, causing him to become the beast he is now.
  • Not Quite Dead: Despite seemingly being killed by Bowser at the end of the movie, given that he burnt a hole through his chest, the final shot of the film very heavily indicates that Godzilla isn't quite dead, as Godzilla lies at the bottom of the ocean, his eye opens and glows a bright blue.
  • Leitmotif: Versions of Godzilla's iconic theme tend to play whenever he is onscreen.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: It is made very clear that Godzilla will not stop at the Mushroom City once he destroys it, as he will go on to destroy the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom and eventually the rest of the world. Bowser literally describes Godzilla taking over the planet as "the Fire Sea of Hell".
  • Signature Roar: He contains the iconic roar that has made him famous throughout the decades.
  • Tragic Villain: Played with, even if only briefly. Godzilla's mutation came from the Americans bombing Hiroshima, which caused him to suffer. Him hating humanity begins to become a bit more understandable when you consider the entire fact that they caused him pain, even if unintentionally.

    Professor E. Gadd

Professor E. Gadd

  • Gadgeteer Genius: He is a scientist who has created numerous inventions like the Super Sushi and the Portalgeist. He would also help create a massive net to potentially capture Godzilla.
  • It's All My Fault: Upon seeing Godzilla enter the Mushroom City and start his rampage, E. Gadd begins to blame himself for what had happened, given that he made the Portalgeist which allowed Godzilla to even enter the Mushroom City to begin with.
  • The Professor: He's a genius scientist who created the Super Sushi, a Power-Up Food that allows anyone who consumes it to gain great strength and size.
  • Science Hero: He creates a new bach of Super Sushi for Bowser so he can defeat Godzilla.
