    The Protagonist

The Protagonist / Icarus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_icarus.png
An amnesiac young man, who finds himself washed up on the shores of Crete.
  • Amnesiac Hero: He doesn't remember neither his past nor his name.
  • Dreadful Musician: He plays flute duing several cutscenes, but he's pretty terrible at it. It's a hint at his possible identity as Icarus, who also liked to play flute, but was bad at it.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Leucos suggests to give him a pseudonym, so everyone has something to call him aside from "Heracles".
  • Heroic Mime: Downplayed a bit. He speaks during battles and has level-up quotes (all in text though, as the game doesn't feature voiceover). Outside of battle, however, he's completely silent, unless one counts Visible Silence. It makes sense if he's really just an animated puppet, as he must be new to this whole "talking" thing.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: After certain end-game revelations there is two main versions of where he came from. He's either Icarus, who died and was revived by Daedalus' experiment, or a puppet given life by the very same experiment. A scene at the end of the game supports both versions in equal measure, essentially allowing the player to choose which one they like more.
  • My Name Is ???: Even after nymphs identify him as Heracles, his name is still shown as "???". It's only after you give him a pseudonym it starts being displayed in battles.
    Leucos

Leucos / Leucothea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_leucos.png
An immortal young woman, who for some reason tries to pass for a man. She meets the hero on Crete, and, convinced that this meeting must be fated, joins him in the search for the reason why they both were granted immortality.
  • The Fatalist: She talks a lot about fate, and believes that she just has to accept some things, like being forced to pretend being a man, as-is, no questions asked. She becomes less focused on it after it turns out that many of these things actually do have a logical explanation.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: She's actually Piazza's older half-sister, and her real name is Leucothea. The man she knew as her father was actually a former captain of the Athenian guard, who was ordered to raise her.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: She tries to pose as a man, but it's incredibly obvious that she isn't. Not even her equipment's descriptions are convinced. Apparently, it was her father's wish. The reason for this was her real father, the king of Athens, wanted to save his city and his children from Zeus' rage, and had to make sure that Leucos was in no position to rule.
    Axios

Axios

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_axios.png
An immortal man, who also wishes to find out why he's immortal. He fancies himself a ladies' man, and takes a great deal of pride in his pretty look.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Downplayed; he usually good at attracting women... but not always. It didn't work on Piazza, and then he further embarassed himself by face-planting into the ground after jumping from the tower.
  • Fusion Dance: Late in the game he and Arnos have to put their souls (back) into Oceanus' body to take on Typhon. However, the Crasis they used wasn't designed to work with multiple souls, and ended up fusing both men into one. The result is mostly Axios, but with some of Arnos' mannerisms and moves.
  • Magic Knight: He wields a sword and is good with magic, too. His strongest skill is outright called "Magic Sword".
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: One of his "damaged" quotes is "Not the hair!".
  • Pieces of God: The cause for his immortality is that his soul is one third of Oceanus' soul. He's essentially one of The Old Gods in a human body, a trait shared with Arnos and Agon.
  • Pretty Boy: He is more on a pretty side compared to other men in the cast. He uses his looks to woo the ladies, and prides himself on his long hair.
    Heracles (MASSIVE SPOILERS

THIS CHARACTER IS A WALKING SPOILER. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Heracles / Iphicles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_heracles.png
The famous Greek demigod hero... Or so he claims, anyway. The party finds him in a jail, wher he was locked for failing to pay for dinner. After realizing that he can't remember how he came to the city, Heracles joins the party in their journey to Olympus.
  • The Big Guy: By far the largest and strongest member of the team, but is not very bright.
  • Dissonant Laughter: He often laughs in inappropriate situations. He later says to Leucos that immortal life is too long to live it in sadness, meaning that it's actually his way to went stress.
  • Ghostly Goals: Played with, kinda. He's not an actual ghost, but rather a corpse of Heracles's brother, Iphicles, given life by a piece of his brother's soul. While it made him think that he's actually is Heracles, he still subconsciously tries to find his brother. Once he does this, he gives back his power and disappears into ether.

Heracles / "Dejected Man"

The real Heracles, who lost his power following the death of Iphicles. Once ressurected Iphicles finds him and returns his power, Heracles takes the place of his younger brother and joins the party in his stead.
    Eris

Eris

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_eris.png
An amnesiac immortal girl, who the party meets during their investigation of mysterious collapsed Taphus.
  • Black Magician Girl: Her stats make her a great magic caster, and her strongest skill has her create a huge sphere of Dark energy to hurl at the enemy. She's also got a snarky personality to boot.
  • Little Miss Snarker: She snarks a lot, such as criticizing Leucos see-through "male" disguise, that apparently comes with a skirt and thigh-high boots.
  • Magic Staff: Her primary weapons are magic staves, which she smacks enemies with.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her secondary weapons are scythes, which give her a huge attack power. One of her skills, Soul Eater, has her slash the enemy with it and absorb some of their HP.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: The child form she spends most of the game in is actually not her true self. She assumed it after absorbing too much Dark ether and losing control of her powers, along with her memories.
  • Winged Humanoid: Her true adult self has a couple of black wings on her back. She doesn't actually use them, but they're animated to flap during some of her battle animations.

Allies

    Piazza

Princess Piazza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_piazza.png
An Athenian princess imprisoned in a tower that party saves after finding out that they need royal permit to reach Heaven's Gate.
  • The Face: While she sticks with the party, she solves all problems with authorities with her position of power.
    General Heracles

General Heracles / Daedalus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_daedalus.png
Yet another person who believes himself to be Heracles, this one is an older man, who tries to hunt down Crasei - a blasphemous invention of the famous engineer Daedalus.
  • The Atoner: Unknowingly so! Despite forgetting his true identity as Daedalus, he still carries lingering guilt about creation of Crasei, which drives him to destroy them.
  • Catchphrase: "Do as I say!". He loves to tell people what to do with this very words.
  • Seeks Another's Resurrection: Daedalus' original goal was to resurrect Icarus. To this end he invented Crasei, setting events of the game in motion.
    Captain Gazuth

Captain Gazuth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_gazuth.png
A sailor who helps the party to leave Crete, and feels obliged to them for saving his ship from sea monsters.
  • Badass Normal: He sticks with you for the duration of a dungeon, and proves himself no less capable than the immortal party.
  • Hidden Depths: This brutish-looking sailor once was an apprentice of Daedalus!
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Downplayed. His dialogue gives the word "you" as "ya" or "ye", "for" as "fer", turns -ing suffix into -in', and has few other oddities, but isn't very thick overall.
    Arnos

Arnos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_arnos.png
The self-proclaimed "Immortal Pirate King", Arnos is also immortal, and seems to be familiar with Axios.
    Achilles

Achilles

A famous demigod, who the party visits on their way to Olympus. Later he participates in the Trojan War.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_achilles.png

Antagonists

    Agon

Agon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goh5_agon.png
A traitorous Athenian general, who pursues his own unknown goals. Like the party, he's also immortal, and seems to know Axios very well...
  • Hero Killer: He succeeds in assassinating Achilles and later kills captain Gazuth. His actions also indirectly lead to the death of Daedalus and Arnos fusing with Axios and seemingly suffering Death of Personality.
  • Pieces of God: He is the third piece of Oceanus' soul, which gives him his immortality.
  • Revenge: His end goal is to take revenge on Zeus, who betrayed his original self, Oceanus, and tries to resurrect Typhon to this end. He doesn't care what will happen beyond that goal.
  • Sdrawkcab Alias: That helpful man called Noga is actually him.
  • Sizeshifter: His boss forms, Beta Agon and Omega Agon, is just him, but bigger.
  • Tin Tyrant: He wears a suit of black armor, as befits a JRPG villain.
