Story Quest Givers
The quest givers for the Story Quest (the overarching plot) of the game.
As a Whole
- Quest Giver: Their roles are to give quests to the plot of the game.
Ragu Silvertongue
The right hand of the player for the first third or so of the game throughout the Old Ages (Stone to Colonial), where he is the main Story Quest giver until his betrayal at the end of the Colonial Age.- Hated by All: After his betrayal, Ragu is not well-loved by the people of your town.
- Treacherous Advisor: Despite being the first character to be introduced, Ragu's whole motivation is to wait for your character to take over a decent chunk of land so he can stage a coup and overthrow him.
- Video Game Tutorial: The Quest Giver for the tutorial, set in the Stone Age.
Pythia
Princess Myciena von Maidenport
Admiral Terry Hunt
Eve
Side Quest Givers
The quest givers for the Side Quests of the game.
As a Whole
Fernikus
General Grivus
Greva Darn
Mandrubar
Rinbin
Bronze Age Rulers
The rulers of the Bronze Age civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: On the pre-Roman Germanic/Celtic tribes.
Herse Baugneson
Sweom Hunusson
Frigga Hengisdottir
Gunnar Snotir
Hasdrubaal Barkas
The ruler of the Iron Age Empire and the quest-giver for the Early Middle Ages Bonus Quest.
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- The Good King: Described by Ragu as a wise and fair ruler, Hasdrubaal is one of the only (if not the only) morally good "final bosses" of an age.
- Graceful Loser: He takes the loss of his empire's independence surprisingly well.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Dies protecting you from assassins in the Barbarian bonus quests.
- Heel–Face Turn: Joins you after his downfall, although he was a pretty cool guy to begin with.
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based off Hasdrubaal Barca, brother of Hannibal Barca - funnily enough, considering that his empire seems heavily based on Rome and the real-life Barca brothers were both major players in the Second Punic War against Rome.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: One of the few you face among the province leaders, who are much more likely to be The Caligula.
Early Middle Ages Rulers
The rulers of the Early Middle Ages civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Based on the outfits, the location, and the time in which it's set, it seems to be based on the Frankish Empire that existed following the Fall of Rome.
- The Low Middle Ages
- Villainous Friendship: Between Freifrau and the Kaiserin.
Freifrau Hagazussa
Freiherr von Greifensprung
- Feudal Overlord
- Hufflepuff House: Despite seeming like the main vassal of the Kaiserin, Freiherr (and his provinces) are only mentioned once throughout the entire Story Quest, and serve no importance to the plot but to unlock the Kaiserin's territories and the EMA bonus quest.
- Upper-Class Twit: He's rather spacey, to say the least.
Kaiserin Konstanze
- Ax-Crazy
- The Bus Came Back: Comes back during the Late Middle Ages Bonus Quest.
- The Caligula
- Hate Sink: Easily one of the most detestable leaders in the game, and arguably the most so of the old ages.
- God Save Us from the Queen!: An insane tyrant who orders hundreds of executions of her own people on an almost daily basis, and even sent the heads of twenty to you as a gift.
Early Middle Ages Bonus Quest
The rulers of the Early Middle Ages bonus quest.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Seems to be a vague mix of the real-life Early Middle Ages Huns and Visigoths, as well as Celtic tribes that resided in pre-Anglo Saxon England.
- The Horde
Bogdan the Beast
General Celeas
- Eyepatch of Power
- Freudian Excuse: The reason he attacked Hasdrubaal's provinces is because he thought the latter abandoned him in the Tarmelmann.
- General Ripper
- King in the Mountain
- The Man Behind the Man: To Bogdan.
High Middle Ages Rulers
The rulers of the High Middle Ages civilisations.
As a Whole
- The Evil Prince: All of them, pretty much. While Lothair is the eldest and the legal heir to the throne, the other brothers decided to take the throne for themselves for unknown reasons.
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: While it is not exactly specific where it is based on, it can be presumed it took influence from the [1]. The Civil War, however, seems to be based on the [2].
- Divide and Conquer: The division of the four brothers is what allows you to conquer all of their provinces.
- Hanging Separately
- The High Middle Ages
- Sibling Rivalry: To take their brother's throne.
Lothair III
- Dumb Jock: The none-too-intelligent oldest brother who is willing to fight the player personally.
Karl der Krumme
- Gonk: His portrait paints him as seemingly a hunchback, with square jaws, a crooked neck, oversized ears and a bowl cut. His looks are mentioned by Mandrubar.
- Manipulative Bastard: Despite claiming that he wants peace, Karl is very likely no different than his already-known b backstabbing younger brother Ludwig, and may have simply missed out on the opportunity to send an envoy to the player. His cunning nature was lampshaded multiple times by several quest givers.
Childerich IV
- The Charmer: Arguably, considering the fact that he is the most popular of the four despite being the youngest.
- Disc-One Final Boss: Of the High Middle Ages. Despite being the strongest of the four, Childerich is defeated halfway through the era to make way for Ludwig's treason.
- The Evil Prince: Yes. Despite being the youngest brother (and thus the last in the line of succession), Childerich is the most popular of the four, with the largest army. Circumstantial evidence from side and story quests indicate him to be charismatic, yet vain, with no actual ruling skills, and his claim boiling down to "I'm the most popular" and "I have the largest army". He is perfectly willing to remove his weaker brothers off the map to claim the throne.
- The Hedonist: Loves to party, and is said to be "treating the women poorly".
- Slimeball
- Upper-Class Twit
Ludwig der Listige
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing
- The Bus Came Back: For the LMA bonus quest.
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder
- Manipulative Bastard
Late Middle Ages Rulers
The rulers of the Late Middle Ages civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: A counterpart to Tudor and Stuart England, with lots of high fantasy tropes thrown in.
Sir Richard Dragonclaw
King Godfrey Darkblood
- The Caligula
- Disc-One Final Boss: Arguably the final boss of the entire "Old Ages" map. However, that is still a whole world away from finishing off your empire...
- Evil Overlord
Colonial Age Rulers
The rulers of the Colonial Age civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of 18th Century France; more specifically, 18th Century France during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars.
Sophie Antoinette
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Marie Antoinette.
Louis XXI
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Louis XVI.
- Upper-Class Twit: If/when you invade one of his provinces, his text says that he's happy to go to war with you because he thinks being king in peacetime is boring.
Victor Bonaparte
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Napoleon Bonaparte and Maximilien Robespierre.
Industrial Age Rulers
The rulers of the Colonial Age civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: The natives are based on a vague mix of Native American Cultures, such as the Sioux and the Apache. The rest of this era is based on the American Civil War, with Cartwright (Lincoln) in the USA (north) and Dee (Lee) in the CSA (south).
Sitting Duck
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Sitting Bull.
- Punny Name
General Dee
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Robert E. Lee.
President Cartwright
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Abraham Lincoln.
Industrial Age Bonus Quest
The rulers of the Industrial Age bonus quest.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Both Barthelemy (Canada) and El Hacha (Mexico) both seem to be historical Decomposite Characters of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the Mexican leader during its war against the United States in the mid-19th century. The El Hacha quest also takes elements of the Bandit Wars against Mexico, and his appearance seems to be based on Pancho Villa. Barthelemy seems to take a bit of influence from Napoleon Bonaparte and Venezuelan revolutionary Simon Bolivar.
- North Is Cold, South Is Hot: The "north" compromises of cold boreal forests equivalent to Canada, while the "south" compromises of the hot deserts and mountains of Mexico (in addition to the tropical Caribbean Islands). Further emphasised by their rulers. The northern ruler is the cold, ruthless Barthelemy, and the southern ruler is the hot-blooded outlaw El Hacha.
Barthelemy Philipeaux, comte de Porcellain
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- Awesome Ego: He is rather arrogant, but judging by his warfare abilities (his final province has a +120% attack boost) it is pretty justified.
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Barthelemy's appearance seems to be based on Napoleon, but his character seems to take elements of Simon Bolivar and the Comte de Rochambeau.
Jodido "El Hacha" Gonzalez
- Bandito
- Genius Bruiser: Appears to be a Dumb Muscle leading a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits. However, if you look closely and analyse it a bit, he's far from stupid. After all, how could the leader of a bunch of thieving bandits own a similar amount of territory as a skilled and experienced general, have greater military expertise (final province has 100% attack boost) than the universe's equivalent of the United States, and have a flourishing town appearing in one of his provinces on the continent map?
Progressive Era
The rulers of the Progressive era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of WW1 Europe. Specifically, Baudoin rules Belgium, Schledorf is the commander for Germany, Joffre is the commander for France, Lydia rules the United Kingdom, Kaiser Joseph Franz rules Austro-Hungary, Vittorio for Italy and Piotr rules the Russian Empire.
Baudoin, Prince d'Havre
- Hufflepuff House: Being reminiscent of the King Albert of Belgium, Baudoin plays a minor role compared to the other leaders, and is basically used as a stepping stone into the new map.
Queen Lydia
Jean Joffre
Generalfeldmarschall Schledorf
Kaiser Joseph Franz
Vittorio Emanuele
Tsar Piotr
Modern Era
The rulers of the Modern era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Based on Japan during WW2. The mainland quest against Ishiwara is based on the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Rin Gozen
Ishiwara Katsu
- Hate Sink: Unlike the other three province owners of this era, there is nothing remotely "cool" about Ishiwara. He is nothing more than a smug, genocidal warlord who exterminated thousands if not millions of mainland civilians without any remorse.
- Insane Admiral
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Kanji Ishiwara.
- Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: If you fought with Ishiwara, the Emperor will have him executed for treason (and presumably war crimes as well). Even if you negotiated with Ishiwara, he will still be killed, assassinated by agents of the Emperor.
- Smug Snake: Turned out to be this. He calls himself the "most powerful man" and the "true emperor", and sought to overthrow his real emperor. However, Hisaohito was not so naive as he thought, and before his coup could take place Ishiwara would be assassinated on his orders.
- The Starscream
- Unwitting Pawn: Although he likes to imagine himself a player, Ishiwara is just a piece in the game (albeit an untrustworthy piece) who the Emperor used for his imperialistic ambitions. In fact, he was well-aware of the Ishiwara's deceitful nature and had him either executed or assassinated before the general could cut his strings.
Yamamoto Isao
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Isoroku Yamamoto.
- Old Soldier
Hisaohito
- The Emperor
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Emperor Hirohito.
Postmodern Era
The rulers of the Postmodern era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Based on Vietnam (and Southeast Asia as a whole) during the Cold War, and more specifically, the Vietnam War. Minh Ho Chi is an obvious Expy of Ho Chi Minh, while Quat Vat Dinh seems to be a female version of Pol Pot.
Che Guerrero
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Che Guevara.
Quat Vat Dinh
Minh Ho Chi
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Ho Chi Minh.
Colonel Lang
Contemporary Era
The rulers of the Contemporary era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of the Middle East during the War on Terror. The Sheikh rules over Saudi Arabia, Alhazred over Iraq/Syria and Abu Harbi over Iran.
- Qurac: Each leader takes each type. The Sheikh rules over a modern version of Type 1 (Arabian Nights), Alhazred rules over Type 3 (the Jihadistan) while Abu Harbi leads Type 2 (the dictatorship).
Sheik Al-Rais
- Arab Oil Sheikh
- Older Than They Look: Despite being apparently the oldest of the three brothers, the Sheikh looks as if he's only in his late-20s to early-30s.
Abdul Alhazred
Abu Harbi
- The Generalissimo
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based on Muammar Gaddafi in terms of appearance. Also takes inspiration from other Middle Eastern dictators such as Saddam Hussein and Bashar Al-Assad.
Tomorrow Era
The rulers of the Tomorrow era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Seems to be a futuristic version of 80s and 90s South America, especially as it concerns the drug trade and dictatorships in the region.
Pietro Escovar
- The Don
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Based off Pablo Escobar.
Commandante Viroz
- Expy: Seems to be an expy of General Medrano from Quantum of Solace, with references to real-life dictators such as Augusto Pinochet and Hugo Chavez.
- The Generalissimo
- Hate Sink
- Puppet King: Lampshaded by Princess Myciena, considering that Viroz is too incompetent to run the country by himself.
Miranda Dolores Feroz
Miguel Mantos
- Diabolical Mastermind
- Expy: Of Dominic Greene from Quantum of Solace.
- True Final Boss: Of the Tomorrow Era.
Future Era
The rulers of the Future era civilisations.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: A futuristic version of modern Africa, as it concerns overpopulation and starvation.
Joy Danba
Hope Omorhen
Dr. Couturier:
Colonel Oumee
- Dirty Coward: Ultimately proves to be one by committing suicide instead of face trial.
- Hate Sink
- No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Seems to be based off former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
Arctic Future
The rulers of the Arctic Future map.
As a Whole
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: A futuristic version of Antarctica and the Arctic. The natives are based on the Eskimos Inuits of Northern Canada.
