Main Characters

Ryo Sugisawa

The player character, a normal student whose life is pretty much on track. Unfortunately, his life is completely turned upside-down when he lends his life force to Minamo.

  • Body Surf: A major part of the second half of the story. It's Played for Laughs - at first.
  • The Everyman: Your typical high school-aged Visual Novel protagonist who lives alone.
  • Fatal Flaw: His Nice Guy tendencies. Literally in this case, as it causes him to lose his physical body, which will eventually kill him. He is also rather indecisive when it comes to choosing between Minamo and Mio, which can lead to the death of his physical body if he doesn't choose (or more accurately if you, the player, don't choose for him).
  • Featureless Protagonist: Subverted, somewhat surprisingly for a Visual Novel made in the early 2000s - Ryo is fully animated with visible eyes.
  • Heroic RRoD: His soul can eventually no longer take the constant jumping between his body and Satoru's and he is forced to choose one - or die.
  • Nice Guy: How many other guys do you know would lend their life force to a girl they barely know? Not only that, when Miss Death gets fed up and forcibly starts to take his life force back from Minamo, he begs her to give Minamo more time despite the risk to himself.
    • He also decides to possess Satoru's body to give Minamo some happiness before she dies for good, which accelerates his own physical body's death.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In Izumi's ending; otherwise, he's a Heroic Mime.
  • Take a Third Option: If you can't choose between Minamo and Mio, you can choose to let his physical body die so he can join Miss Death as a soul collector.

Minamo Kamina

Voiced by: Eriko Kigawa (as Yumi Haruna)

A waitress at Blue Cosmos, Minamo is a silly and pure girl. Seeing Ryo and Mio together, Minamo wishes she had the courage to tell Satoru, the man she's in love with, about her feelings. With great regrets from her sudden death, Minamo became a ghost and proceeds to beg Ryo for help...

  • The Ditz
  • Fatal Flaw: Her indecisiveness. She doesn't gather up the courage to confess her feelings to Satoru until right before he dies.
  • Idiot Hair: Befitting her status as The Ditz.
  • It's All About Me: Sure Minamo, both you and Ryo are on borrowed time, and Ryo was even nice enough to lend his life force to you, but take your sweet time confessing to Satoru. She gets better in the second half, however.
  • Knew It All Along: In most routes, she deduces early on that "Satoru" is not really Satoru; how she finds out depends on the route.
  • Love Transcends Spacetime: Not even death can stop her from reincarnating into a different timeline to be with Ryo.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: She dies not long after the beginning of the game, kickstarting the plot.

Mio Hiiragi

Voiced by: Asuka Tanii (as Mai Akizuki)

A solemn and beautiful girl, Mio is Ryo's girlfriend. As the class president, she's earned the trust of her classmates, but she has a clumsy side to her personality as well (which she doesn't want others to find out). When Ryo's life force leaves his body, she finds him unconscious and is very worried. Mio excels at school (especially science and mathematics) and is a good cook. Her only weakness is sports.

Miss Death

Voiced by: Nao Takamori (as Yuka Takana)

A Soul Collector; an ethereal being who flies around collecting wandering souls, leading them to the land of light. She does her best to help Ryo even though he's not really dead. She's an attractive spirit whose body gets small when she loses energy.

  • Deus Sex Machina: How she can recover her power when she gets low on it.
  • Mentor Archetype: Acts as one to Ryo, especially if her ending is chosen.
  • Shinigami: Her Japanese name is even "Shinigami-chan".
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: A benign example; she collects people's souls after they die to lead them to the afterlife.

Mao Hiiragi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mao_9.png
Voiced by: Hikaru Watanabe

Mio's identical twin sister. Mao is just as pretty as Mio but is much more light-hearted. Unlike Mio, Mao is very sensitive and cries easily. Ryo treats her as if she was his sister, but it seems like there is something she is unhappy with...

  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She wants both Ryo and her sister to be happy, so she keeps her feelings for Ryo secret.
  • Love Confession: She confesses to Ryo when he's in Satoru's body, much to her embarrassment later.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Unbeknownst to Mio, Mao is also in love with Ryo.
  • The Unfavorite: How she feels compared to Mio, being not as accomplished in school or love. According to her, this lead her to try and differentiate herself from Mio by dressing differently, having different hobbies, and changing up her hairstyle.
  • Unrequited Love

Narumi Fujisaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/narumi_5.png
Voiced by: Kaoru Imai

Minamo's best friend and also a waitress at Blue Cosmos. She attends a different school than Ryo and Minamo. Ever since she was a child, she has had psychic powers that allow her to talk to ghosts.

Kokoro Imai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kokoro_2.png
Voiced by: Ema Kogure (as Runa Sakaki)

A childish girl who goes to the same school as Minamo, she has a bright and cheerful personality but is somewhat spoiled. Like Minamo, she's in love with Satoru and tries her best to win him over. As such, Kokoro and Minamo eventually become fierce love rivals. Her best friends are two hamsters which she sometimes throws at people (mostly at Minamo).

Izumi Morishita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/izumi_99.png
Voiced by: Nana Ichii

A sad girl with special powers who often leaves her body and floats around in spirit form in an attempt to escape the pressures of the real world. She meets Ryo, who wishes he could do something to bring her happiness.

  • Astral Projection: She is capable of doing this, which leads Ryo to think she's dead until Miss Death points out otherwise.
  • Broken Bird: Izumi is a depressed young woman who cannot relate to anyone, and whose depression has driven everyone away from her (or her away from everyone).
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her eyes are more of a shade of cyan, but are blue like her hair.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is implied to have abandoned his family, mostly over his guilt in being unable to relate to her problems.
  • Shrinking Violet: Complete with the Nerd Glasses.
  • Unrequited Love: In her ending, she decides to confess to someone she's had her eye on until she finds out he has a girlfriend. She confesses anyway.
